THE SHADOW OF SPARTA
Routledge / Classical Press of Wales. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 0415104130 . Inscribed in pen to Mark Golden by Stephen Hodkinson on ffep. Light shelfwear. ; 408 pages; The past 20 years have witnessed a revival of interest in the study of Sparta. The early 20th-century images of Spartans as hearty good fellows or scarlet-cloaked automata have been superceded by more complex scholarly interpretations of this obscure civilization. The mystery surrounding Sparta has been instrumental in shaping scholarship on the subject. Historians have taken as much interest in the myths and disinformation attached to Sparta as they have in the truth about their city-state. The studies in this volume provide insights into the traditional question of what actually happened at Sparta. Yet the implications of this work go far beyond Laconia to focus on some of the most studied of Greek writers showing how Athenians defined the achievement or the failure of their own city. ; Signed by One Author . The Villa Ariadne
London: Hodder & Stoughton 1974 The Villa Ariadne was built at Knossos Crete by Sir Arthur Evans soon after he discovered the Minoan palace when the site was his own private property. The villa became home in turn to John Pendlebury who used it as a base for his excavations at Knossos and his explorations of the island. After Pendlebury's death at the hands of invading German paratroopers the Villa Ariadne was taken over by General Karl Kreipe who was living there when he was kidnapped by Patrick Leigh Fermor and marched across the island to captivity an episode immortalized in the film "Ill Met by Moonlight". Dilys Powell who knew Crete and the Villa Ariadne for over 40 years weaves her own memories of Evans and Pendlebury together with recollections of the Cretan people. Her classic account first published in 1973 is at once a chapter of autobiography and a portrait of a mythical island which captured her heart. It should appeal to all those who share her love for Greece and especially Crete. Reprint. Near Fine/Very Good Price Clipped. Hard Cover. Hodder & Stoughton hardcover

An appalling expose of the situation of the national minorities in the Balkans and in Central Europe (which) tried heroically to call to the attention of the French people the dangers to which France and all Europe were exposing themselves should France continue to finance and support the criminal and ambitious political parties of the Little Entente, and especially of Yugoslavia...
