‎ROSACCIO Giuseppe Pordenone circa 1530 – Venezia 1621‎

‎(Grecia)‎

Charming wood block map of by the Italian XVIth and XVIIth century writer, humanist and cartographer Giuseppe Rosaccio. Taken from one of the editions of "Teatro del cielo e della terra" and also insert in "Le sei età del Mondo" or "Il Mondo e sue parti", works by Rosaccio himself. The book was very popular and many edition where printed in Treviso, Bologna, Florence, Verona, Venice, Viterbo from 1594 and 1688. The maps are printed from two wood block except the last edition of 1688. Woodcut, laid down on antique mounting, in very good conditions.‎

‎ROSACCIO Giuseppe Pordenone circa 1530 – Venezia 1621‎

‎Fortezza d Maina‎

‎Rome and the Mediterranean 290 to 146 BC: The Imperial Republic (The Edinburgh History of Ancient Rome)‎

‎Rome s stunning rise to mastery of the ancient Mediterranean Nathan Rosenstein charts Rome s incredible journey and command of the Mediterranean over the course of the third and second centuries BC. He describes the Republic s great wars - against Pyrrhus, Carthage and Hannibal, and the kings of Macedon and Syria - as well as its subjugation of Gallic northern Italy and Spain. This book reveals why and shows how Rome engaged in war so frequently; it highlights the secret of Rome s extraordinary military success and the significant impact on both Italy and Rome. Key features: Explains the political dynamics of the Republican aristocracy and the economic and demographic foundations of Roman power Demonstrates how it integrated many thousands of citizens across the whole of central Italy into a single body politic Analyses the operation of the Roman army on campaign and in combat Keywords: Rome, Pyrrhus, Middle Republic, Heraclea, Asculum, Beneventum, Maleventum, First Punic War, Second Punic War, Hannibalic War, Trasimene.‎

‎Imperatores Victi: Military Defeat and Aristocractic Competition in the Middle and Late Republic‎

‎8vo, hardcover in dj, pp224. Given the intense competition among aristocrats seeking public office in the middle and late Roman Republic, one would expect that their persistent struggles for honor, glory, and power could have seriously undermined the state or damaged the cohesiveness of the ruling class. Rome in fact depended on aristocratic competition, since no professional bureaucracy directed public affairs and no salary was attached to any public office. But as Rosenstein adeptly shows, competition appears to have been surprisingly limited, in ways that curtailed the possible destructive effects of all-out contests between individuals. "Imperatores Victi" examines one particularly striking case of such checks on competition. Military success at all times represented an abundant source of prestige and political strength at Rome. Generals who led armies to victory enjoyed a better-than-average chance of securing higher office upon their return from the field. Yet this study demonstrates that defeated generals were not barred from public office and in fact went on to win the Republic's most highly coveted and hotly contested offices in numbers virtually identical with those of their undefeated peers. Rosenstein explores how this unexpected limit to competition functions, reviewing beliefs about the religious origins of defeat, assumptions about common soldiers' duties in battle, and definitions of honorable behavior of an aristocrat during a crisis. These perspectives were instrumental in shifting the onus of failure away from a general's person and in offering positive strategies a general might use to win glory and respect even in defeat and to silence potential critics among a failed general's peers. Such limits to competition had an impact on the larger problems of stability and coherence in the Republic and its political elite; these larger problems are discussed in the concluding chapter.‎

‎Public Opinion and Politics in the Late Roman Republic‎

‎8vo, nr. ed. 284pp. This book investigates the working mechanisms of public opinion in Late Republican Rome as a part of informal politics. It explores the political interaction (and sometimes opposition) between the elite and the people through various means, such as rumours, gossip, political literature, popular verses and graffiti. It also proposes the existence of a public sphere in Late Republican Rome and analyses public opinion in that time as a system of control. By applying the spatial turn to politics, it becomes possible to study sociability and informal meetings where public opinion circulated. What emerges is a wider concept of the political participation of the people, not just restricted to voting or participating in the assemblies.‎

‎It's All Greece to Me‎

‎" Greece is a country famed worldwide for its physical beauty, wealth of antiquities and other vestiges of its unsurpassed ancient civilisation. Yet despite over ten million annual visitors and an open and inviting culture, modern Greece is not an easy country for outsiders to understand or comprehend fully. Countless tourist guides extoll its resorts and archaeological tomes unravel its classical past, but there are few books that attempt to explore the many complexities of Greek life and lifestyles right here in the present. Until now, that is, "It's All Greece to Me: Impressions of Contemporary Greek Life", by longtime Athens News contributor John F.L. Ross, offers an accessible and dependable guide to the nooks and crannies of the modern Greek character, mentallity, customs and attitudes. It offers a sharp-eyed and challenging yet sympathetic look at the rapidly changing nature of contemporary Greece at the dawn of the new milleniium. Throughout, Ross writes with the clarity, gentle wit and perceptive insight that readers have come to expect from the author of the longrunning and popular Thursday column "On Second Thought." Book‎
