‎Paris, Leroy, 1789.

"This journey was made in 1779 with members of the family of Count Ludolf, with whom Sestini travelled extensively as tutor. The Count was ambassador to the Porte from Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Sestini's works are far-ranging and reflect the different stages of his life. He spent the years from 1774 to 1778 in Sicily as librarian/antiquary to Prince Biscari (…) From the middle of 1778 to 1780 he was in the service of Count Ludolf (…) In 1780 he joined the entourage of Robert Ainslie, English ambassador to the Porte, and acted as his numismatist. Ainslie had a very fine collection of coins, which Sestini catalogued (…) The journey described in the Voyage de Constantinople à Bassora was also made while Sestini was in Ainslie's service. The Voyage dans la Grèce Asiatique describes a journey from Brussa to Nicomedia with many details of the archaeology and natural history of this region, including a flora of this part of Asia Minor (the Asian Olympus in Bithynia)". ‎Settis S. (cur.)‎

‎I greci. Storia, arte, cultura e società. Vol. 1: Noi e i greci‎

‎ill.

‎Athens - Auschwitz Trans. Nikis Stavroulakis‎

‎Athens: Lycabettus Press 1983 New - will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece Moving personal testimony of the way the Jews were deported from Greece to concentration camps during the Nazi occupation. Errikos Sevillias was born in Athens in 1901 into a Sephardic family. He learned how to work in leather as a child and opened his own leather workshop when he was 16. From 1919 until 1923 he served in the Greek army for three years fighting in Asia Minor. After the war he reopened his workshop married and had a daughter. Life as he writes "went along well" until he experienced "an inexplicable and unexpected great adventure" meaning Auschwitz. Errikos Sevillias was killed in Athens by a motorcycle in 1974 when he was 73 years old. The manuscript of this book was found among his papers after he died. He describes the appalling events at Auschwitz with extraordinary calm saying merely that he couldn't understand "what they wanted in doing such an unjust and evil thing." His simple statements of events give the clearest possible image of the indescribable. The manuscript was translated by Nikos Stavroulakis who also has provided an extremely useful historical outline of the Jewish presence in Greece with a description of the occupation and final solution. 125 pages black and white photographs hardback. 1st Greek Ed. ‎Sewell Brian‎

‎South From Ephesus ; Travels in Aegean Turkey‎

‎London: Tauris Parke Paperbacks 2012 Weary of what he called the tyranny of western art Brian Sewell first visited Turkey - a country that had captivated him since he was a boy - in 1975. He thought that there anything he found would have no relevance to the European art that he had so compulsively stitched into the dense fabric of my art-historical memory and that he could therefore enjoy the art for its own sake. But Turkey surprised him and he delighted in the unexpected wealth of Greek Roman Byzantine and Islamic cultures there returning three of four times a year until 1990. The main bulk of this book focuses on his journey from Ephesus to Side one winter. With typically acerbic commentary Sewell describes not always favourably the archaeological and historical sites he comes across the landscapes that so clearly thrilled him the encounters he has along the way and the fractious though wonderfully funny relationship he forms with Ayhan his driver. South from Ephesus is an incomparable portrait of Turkey and its artistic heritage - a book that could only have been written by Sewell and which has become a quirky classic of travel literature. 266p plates bibliography .index.
