Man wird vielmehr annehmen dürfen, dafs wir hier selbständige, fortlaufende Aufzeichnungen vor uns haben. Es hat die höchste Wahrscheinlichkeit, dafs Xenophon im lebendigen Interesse an den Begebenheiten, die vor seinen Augen geschahen und an denen er zum Teil persönlich beteiligt war, dieselben allmählich vielleicht mehr für sich selbst als zum Zwecke der Veröffentlichung aufgezeichnet hat. Man wird wohl behaupten können, dafs wir in der Schrift mehr eine höchst schätzbare Sammlung von Materialien zu einer Geschichte der Zeit Xenophons als eine wirklich planmäfsig angelegte Geschichte derselben besitzen, eine Sammlung, die in ihren einzelnen Teilen, je nachdem die Quellen reichlicher oder spärlicher flössen und je nach dem persönlichen Anteile, welchen der Verfasser an den Ereignissen nahm, sehr verschieden ist, und daß höchst wahrscheinlich die Schrift, ohne dafs Xenophon eine ausgleichende und vervollständigende Hand daran gelegt, nach seinem Tode von fremder Hand ( ob unverändert, ob überarbeitet, dürfte schwer zu entscheiden sein ) der Öffentlichkeit übergeben wurde» Ob Xenophon aber diese Aufzeichnungen gemacht, um nach denselben eine vollständige Geschichte seiner Zeit auszuarbeiten, das läfst sich natürlich bei dem Mangel an jeder Andeutung weder behaupten noch leugnen. -- Nimmt man eine solche Weise der Aufzeichnung an, so erklärt sich leicht die eigentümliche Darstellung Xenophons, die ohne eine feste Regel, deren strenge Befolgung das zu viel und das zu wenig vermieden hätte, zwischen der größten und sorgsamsten Ausführlichkeit und der trocknen Aneinanderreihung der einzelnen Thatsachen schwankt, so ergiebt sich leicht der Grund zu der bisweilen rein annalistischen Verknüpfung der Begebenheiten, die keinen leitenden Gedanken, keine Notwendigkeit in der Folge der Ereignisse blicken läßt.‎

Das Werk lebt aus der Spannung zwischen der äußerlichen Fülle phantastisch sich verwandelnder Kulissen und der inneren Beschränkung auf ein einziges, in allen Abwandlungen gleichbleibendes Grundthema. Was Xenophon erzählt, ist ein erotischer Roman. Ein junger Mann und ein junges Mädchen begegnen einander, fallen in Leidenschaft, besitzen sich: "All sein Haar deckte sie über ihre Augen, nahm die Kränze fort, preßte küssend ihre Lippen auf die seinen. Und sie umschlangen einander und verstummten. Die ganze Nacht hindurch aber strengten sie sich um die Wette an zu zeigen, wer von ihnen mehr von Liebe erfüllt war." Dann treten ihnen äußere Schwierigkeiten in den Weg, sie werden voneinander getrennt und von anderen Liebhabern umworben, ihre Standfestigkeit und Treue tragen ihnen Leid und Verfolgung ein. Aber sie lassen sich durch niemanden und durch nichts auf der Welt einschüchtern oder wankend machen: ihre Liebe steht ihnen höher als alles andere, sie nehmen Verleumdung und Verbannung, Fesseln und Foltern auf sich. Höher sogar als ihr Leben stellen sie ihre Liebe, selbst den Tod nehmen sie an, wenn es unausweichlich um ihre Treue geht. So ist dieses Werk ein Hohes Lied der Liebe, ein Hymnos auf die Treue, ein Preislied auf die Unbedingtheit der Hingabe an den Anderen, auf die Hintansetzung aller anderen Genüsse und Güter um des Einen, Großen willen. Im Roman sorgen die Götter für ein glückliches Ende - die Leser sollten sich der gütigen Führung vergewissern, die das Ausharren belohnt. Aber hinter dieser Handlung des Vordergrundes erstreckt sich weithin die Bedeutung des Geschehens. Der antike Roman hat seine Wurzel in der Kulterzählung: Er ist Wiederholung, Nachgestaltung des Berichts von den Leiden des Gottes, wie er in die Hand seiner Feinde gegeben, gemartert und getötet wird, und wie er doch lebensvoll und siegreich aus allen Leiden hervorgeht. Habrokomas und Anthia erfahren, wie all die anderen Paare des antiken Romans, auf ihrem Lebensweg das Schicksal von Isis und Osiris. Die Beziehung tritt im Laufe des Romans immer klarer hervor und wird auch unmittelbar deutlich: Anthia betet zu Isis um Rettung, sie gibt sich bei Psammis aus als Geweihte der Isis, vor dem Tempel der Isis finden die beiden Liebenden sich wieder, ihr danken sie für ihre Rettung. Das göttliche Leben und Erleiden, widergespiegelt im Schicksal des Menschen, die Lehre und Erfahrung der Mysterienreligionen jener Jahrhunderte, reflektiert im Lebensweg zweier exemplarischer heidnischer "Heiligen"-Ge-stalten - der scheinbar so einfache, einflächige Roman hat religiöse Tiefen, die der moderne Leser kaum auszuschöpfen vermag.
