Second edition. cxx 444pp 17 maps 44 plans and a panorama of Jerusalem stamp on title-page inner hinges slightly split; publisher's red cloth gilt some minor staining to the upper cover; a very good copy. This is the famous edition which gave rise to a lawsuit brought by Howard. Howard a hotel owner in Jaffa and Jerusalem brought the lawsuit against Baedeker with reference to some disparaging remarks in this volume about his hotels. Howard won the lawsuit and Baedeker was ordered to remove the critical comments. However in the next edition Howard's hotels were omitted and his business suffered greatly as a result. Issued c.1894. Archaeology in the Holy Land was in its infancy. Communications were rudimentary. The construction of the first railway from Jaffa to Jerusalem was authorised in 1875 but it was doubtful whether it would pay as there was no trade of any importance in Southern Palestine and the yearly influx of pilgrims was of short duration. The only modern roads in Syria were the diligence routes from Beirut to Damascus and the road from Jaffa to Jerusalem. The second edition was not issued until 1894. Pages clean except for some writing on the second blank page some marginalia scattered infrequently throughout the text the absence of the plan of Jerusalem at p.21 and some water-staining on several of the page edges; there is a light but detectable ripple through the page block. The fold-out map at p. 10 and the rear fold-out map show some wrinkling with accompanying short tears and chipping at the edges otherwise clean; binding is relaxed at some signatures but remains secure; the ribbon pagemarker is faded at the top and nearly detached; the hard cover shows some rubbing around the spine edges and tapping at the free corners as well as gentle sunning at the spine but the gilt lettering on the front cover and spine remains clear and bright; overall sound and attractive.
