‎Leipsic: Karl Baedeker Publisher 1907. Fifth Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5�" - 6�" tall. Original publisher's binding of red cloth gilt over flexible boards. Light rubbing to edges and a few small marks but generally clean with bright gilt especially on upper board. Marbled page edges slightly age-toned. Publisher's list of guide books to front endpapers and map of France to back eps. Blue and red ribbon markers still present although red one is detached. 578 pp. 33 maps and 49 plans. All maps including fold-outs are present attached clean and undamaged except for 1 cm closed tear to bottom edge of front map and removal of most of the Sud-Est map at rear. Staples can be seen rusting between a few pages but are generally invisible. Front hinge starting but a firmly bound copy. Some of the bottom page corners have been folded over. Upside-down on the verso of the ffep is a pencil list of customary tips e.g. 10% Floor Waiter; 20% Chambermaid. I have not erased this as it adds delightful character to the book. Other than that and a couple of small marks to the feps the contents are clean without bookplates inscriptions or other markings. Karl Baedeker 1801-1959 was born in Essen and attended Heidelberg University. His family was involved in the publishing and bookselling business and around 1828 he entered the travel guide business. Baedeker created a different kind of travel book that opened up tourism for a new class of travelers by guiding the tourist to the principal attractions in a country or area. This information was often edited by Baedeker himself and sons would take over and expand the business after his death. This edition provides considerable information and many maps and plans of parts of the United States. Crisp and clean except for a prior owner's marks on the publication list on the front pastedown and her name on the front free endpaper light toning in the margins some separation of the 'Index of Streets and Plans of London' and a vertical crease in the margin of the fourth zone plan just left of Hyde Park Corner. The marbling around the page block edges is still clear though browning a bit. Binding is starting at both hinges but otherwise secure; full red cloth is modestly sunned along the spine and bears little spots of fraying at spine ends and a few small inky smudges along the left rear; otherwise sound and well-kept.
