CHADWICK JAMES LISE MEITNER OR. FRISCH H. von HALBAN F. JOLIOT L. KOWARSKI. PMM 422 b c d. DISCOVERY OF THE NEUTRON
Possible Existence of a Neutron Chadwick. Bound with: Disintegration of Uranium by Neutrons: a New Type of Nuclear Reaction Meitner and Frisch. Withbound: Physical Evidence for the Division of Heavy Nuclei under Neutron Bombardment. Frisch. Withbound: Liberations of Neutrons in the Nuclear Explosion of Uranium. Von Halban Joliot Kowarski.
London Nature 1932 a.1939. 4to. Blank wrappers. All 4 extracted from "Nature" Nos. 3252 Febr. 1932 3615 Febr.1939 3616 Febr. 1939 and 3620 March 1939. All four papers in first edition. In 1932 James Chadwich proved the existence of th atomic particles carrying no electric charge which for this reason he called 'neutrons' the first item offered here. "In 1934 Senator Corbino head of the physics department at the University of Rome urged Enrico Fermi and his collaborators among whom was Brune Pontecorvo to patent a proces they had perfected for the production of artificial radio-activity by slow neutron bombardement. This process was a by-product of repetitions and enlargements of a discovery by Irene Curie and her husband Fredeic Joliot that the bombardment of certain light elements with alpha particles induced radio-activity. Further experiments conducted in 1938 at Berlin by Hahn and Strassmann were reported by Lise Meitner. She and her nephew O.R. Frisch working with Niels Bohr's laboratory found the true explanation of these phenomena. The interpolation of a neutron into the nucleus of a uranium atom caused it to divide into two parts and to release energy amounting to about 200000000 electron volts. This process bore such a close similarity to the division of a living cell that Frisch suggested the use of the term 'fission' to describe it.Halban Jolio and Kowarski established the theoretical possibility of a self-perpetuating reaction." Possible Existence of a Neutron Chadwick The neutron hypothesis Iwanenko.
New York Macmillian and Co 1932. Royal8vo. In publisher's pictorial cloth with gilt lettering and Nature's logo to spine. Entire issue of "Nature" January - June 1932 Vol. CXXXVI 129. "Emmanuel College" in gilt lettering to spine. Signs of label removal from spine very slight wear to extremities otherwise a very fine and clean copy. Rare in the publisher's binding. Chadwick: P. 312. Iwanenko: Pp. 798. First printing of Chadwick's landmark paper in which he announced the discovery of the neutron. The discovery awarded him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1935. The discovery of the neutron was of seminal importance to the evolution of Particle Physics.<br><br>James Chadwick performed a series of experiments at the University of Cambridge showing that the gamma ray hypothesis was untenable. He suggested that the new radiation consisted of uncharged particles of approximately the mass of the proton and he performed a series of experiments verifying his suggestion. These uncharged particles were called neutrons.<br><br>"The discovery of the neutron completely revolutionized the physics of the atomic nucleus both experimentally and theoretically. Since they are not electrically repelled they provide an ideal probe to study the nucleus". Brandt The Harvest of a Century. hardcover

The Collisions of alpha particles with Hydrogen Nuclei.
London Taylor and Francis 1921. Blank wrapper. In: "The London Edinburgh and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science" Sixth Series Vol.42 No. 252 December 1921. Pp. 873-1024 textillustr. a. 1 plate. Entire issue offered. Chadwick & Bieler's paper: pp. 923-940 textillustr. First printingof this milestone paper in which the strong nuclear forces are mentioned for the first time.<br><br>"It was only in 1921 that Chadwick had first shown that at very small distances the interactions of alpha particles with the atomic nucleus did not follow exactly the inverse square law predicted from the repulsion of their positive electrical scharges. Chadwick concluded that his experiments showed that these nuclear forces are of "very great intensity". According to Pais this is THE FIRST PUBLISHED STATEMENT ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF A STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE. This 'new force' interpretation was disputed untill well into 1920s."Hey & Walters.<br><br>"In any event Chadwick and Bieler's final conclusion avoid all reference to a possible electromagnetic cause for the deviations from the simple theory: "The present experiments do not seem to throw any light on the nature of the law of variation of the forces at the seat of an electric charge but merely show that the forces are of very great intensity. It is our task to find some field of force which will reproduce these effects." I consider this statement made in 1921 as marking the birth of the strong interaction."Pais in "Inward Bound" p. 240. unknown

CHAIN E + H. W. FLOREY ET AL. THE DISCOVERY OF THE USEFULNESS OF PENICILLIN NOBEL PRIZE 1945
Penicillin as a Chemotheraputic Agent.
London The Lancet Limited 1940. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary full black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "The Lancet" Vol. 2 1940. A fine and clean copy. Pp. 226-228. Entire volume: XX 830 pp. First printing of this seminal paper within microbiology and medicine. Alexander Flemming had in the 20ies discovered penicillin but it was not until Chain and Florey's groundbreaking research published in the present paper that the true remarkable features of penicillin - that it was probably the most effective chemotherapeutic drug known - became know and usable on a practical level. Flemming Chain and Florey received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1945 "for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases".<br><br>"He Flemming was unsuccessful however due to his limited knowledge of chemistry and the "mold juice" remained of limited use until 1940-41 when Ernst Boris Chain and Howard W. Florey using Flemming's original culture successfully prepared a pure and stable penicillin extract and demonstrated its usefulness in treating human bacterial infection. Within three years the United States government in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry was producing penicillin on a large scale with the result that many thousand lives were saved during World War II." Grolier One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine.<br><br>"In the late 1930's Florey and Chain began their investigation of this mold broth filtrate from Penicillium notatum as part of their general interest in systemic antibacterial agents. Fleming had isolated penicillin in 1928. He found it was a promising external antiseptic against some pathogenic bacteria but its chemical instability among other reasons soon led him to abandon penicillin as a therapeutic agent.<br>By May 1940 Chain had produced enough penicillin for Florey to conduct tests on mice infected with deadly hemolytic streptococci. These early tests yielded very promising results Chain in collaboration with Edward Abraham spent the rest of the year improving the extraction and purification of penicillin for clinical tests which began early in 1941.<br>Serious problems with the fermentation production of penicillin led the British and American governments by early 1944. to coordinate hundreds of scientists for the development of a commercially feasible synthesis of penicillin. Chain and his collaborators at Oxford however had shed much light on the chemistry of the drug by this time. By October 1943 they proposed what turned out to be the correct structure of penicillin. They established a fundamental understanding of the chemistry of penicillin. This aided fermentation work on the drug in the 1940's and served as the foundation for the development of semisynthetic penicillins from the mid 1950's on." hardcover

CHRISTOPHER COLOMBUS, (1451-1506).
[A FINE BOOK OF COLOMBUS VOYAGE HOAX] My secrete log boke: S.A.S.X. MY XPO FERENS [Supples servus altissimi Salvatoris Xristi Mariae Josephi Xpoferens 'Christoferens'].
Very Good English, Middle (1100-1500) Original imitation vellum. An OCLC register says "decorated with small shells and seaweed pasted on". Chipped on extremities and spine, slight pouring on paper; several tapes used at the link of the pages to binding. Otherwise a good copy. Small 4to. (27 x 18 cm). In Middle English (15th century). The first leaf attached to front cover. At end, 6 blank leaves. [46] p. with [7] blank pages, many illustrations, 1 letter with its broken seal. Separately, a facsimile of a letter from Isabella (Dona Isabel por Gracia de Dios Reina de Castilla y Leon etc. etc. A Don Cristobal Colon de Genova) to Columbus, dated 'Granada a? trece de Abril de MCCCCXCII,' with a broken seal attached. Script on vellum as well. Two registers in OCLC (1029665801 and 60764823 -This one is New York Edition-). 'Düsseldorf Edition' says "A spurious work purporting to be the logbook of Christopher Columbus, which, according to legend, he threw into the sea during a storm, and which was found on the coast of Pembrokeshire 400 years later. Written in antiquated English, with paper and binding made to imitate in color and appearance a volume damaged by exposure to seawater. "S.A.S.X. MY XPO FERENS" from cover, variously interpreted, eg. Supples servus altissimi Salvatoris Xristi Mariae Josephi Xpoferens. Forgery attributed to Karl Maria Seyppel. Printed by lithographic process on imitation parchment paper. Text and illustrations printed to appear handwritten, with many decorated initials. Accompanied by: reproduction of a letter purported to be by the finder of the logbook dated "September forth 1890"; "Don~a Isabel por gracia de Dios Reina do Castilla y Leon, etc., etc. a? Don Cristo?bal Colon de Ge?nova," supposed letter on imitation parchment, authorizing his voyage, dated "Granada, a? trece de abril de mccccxcij," with an attached seal, laid in.". This is a fine hoax on Colombus' first travel into America. It includes a map containing Cuba, San Salvador, and unknown areas with a hand drawing of Columbus as well as other illustrations and decorative borders, etc. This Edition may be printed in memory of the 400th year of '1492'. "Columbus's log of the first voyage has not survived, although we do have an abstract of it, written in the 1530s by Bartolome de las Casas. However, that actually used the "Barcelona Copy" of Columbus's original log. The chart above shows the sources that exist today in green, and sources that have disappeared in red. The chart also shows where secondary souses got their original information. When he returned to Spain in 1493, Columbus gave his original log to the Sovereigns at the royal court in Barcelona. Queen Isabela ordered the log to be copied, resulting in the so-called Barcelona Copy. The original has not been seen since, however, the Barcelona Copy was returned to Columbus just before his second voyage later that year, and remained in his possession until his death in 1506. It then passed into the hands of son Fernando, who used it when he wrote a biography of Columbus in 1538. The Barcelona Copy too was lost sometime after 1554. Sometime around 1530, the Barcelona Copy was abstracted by Las Casas into the Diario. This abstract as part of his research that led to his massive work, the Historia de las Indias. So The Diario remains our best historical record of the first voyage of Columbus. On the westward passage, Columbus kept two sets of distance figures in the log. According to Las Casas, this was done to allay the fears of the crew that they had sailed too far from Spain. The abstract is mostly written in the third person, but there are a number of large direct quotes from the log written in Columbus's own first-person.". (Source: Christopher-Columbus Europe website).
