Western Australia; Fenians; John Sarsfield Casey
Full and revised report of the eight days' trial in the Court of Queen's Bench on a criminal information against John Sarsfield Casey at the prosecution of Patten Smith Bridge from November 27th to December 5 1877
Dublin: The Central Tenants' Defense Committee 1877. Hardcover. Good overall. The trial of John Sarsfield Casey an activist defender of Irish tenant farmers who earlier in his career wrote letters to Fenian newspapers as 'The Galtee Boy' which were used in his 1865 trial to support a charge of treason and a sentence of transportation to Australia. Casey was one of the 62 Fenians transported to Western Australia. He was granted a free pardon in 1869 and returned to Dublin in 1870. The 1877 trial recorded here was brought against Casey in Ireland by the agent for a wealthy land owner Nathaniel Buckley named Patten Smith Bridge. Bridge had imposed enormous rent increases on the Galtee Mountain tenant farmers; he alleged that Casey's articles to the press about the excessive rent increases had libeled him. Huge rents increases and the inability of farmers to pay resulted in whole families being thrown out of their homes; Casey knew these facts from personal experience as some of these tenants were his relatives. The trial lasted 8 days; Bridge's claim for damages against Casey was repudiated. 8vo vii 98pp. Deaccessed by the NY Association of the Bar Library with their stamp on the title page. Biography of Adelaide Ristori
Sydney: Caxton Steam Machine Printing Office 1871. Wraps. Very good - condition. Scarce biographical booklet the only one on Ristori published in Sydney describing the life of the Italian actress Adelaide Ristori renowned as a tragedienne. Ristori visited Australia with a large Italian entourage for 4 months in 1875 performing in Ballarat Melbourne and Sydney and this booklet was likely published as a promotional piece for the tour. This Australian booklet is not dated although Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia assigns a date ca. 1871. It was translated from Italian into English to be used as an advertising piece for Ristori's 1875 Australia tour. It was published at the Caxton printing office which was functioning under that name until 1876. Adelaide Ristori 1822 - 1906 toured widely including Paris 1855 1856 London Madrid 1857 and the United States 1866. The booklet describes Ristori's American visits: the first tour was mainly in the North the events of the Civil War making a stop in New Orleans impossible. Ristori did eventually visit there reciting pieces at the grand bazaar following which she "had to accept a sumptuous supper which was attended by the leading people of the South headed by the generals Beauregard and Lee". p19. In 1875 after one of her American tours she traveled to Australia where her company's lavish productions of historical drama were performed in Italian. Ristori performed the roles of Medea Mary Stuart and the title role in Elizabeth Queen of England written especially for her by Paolo Giacometti. Such was Ristori's popularity that in Victoria a company working several gold mines on the rich Berry Lead near Allendale north of Ballarat was named Ristori after her. This led to an adjoining town being named Ristori Town. 8vo 29pp. Printed glossy paper wrappers the title printed in black at front wrapper with "Adelaide Ristori" in an elaborate type font. Ship board music; Australia
Watercolor illustrated musical program R. M. S. John Elder 1883. For the relief of the "suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger"
1883. Very good overall. An interesting hand painted and roneoed ship's musical program. Produced for an Australian ship voyage 29th November 1883 with the proceeds of the performance "devoted to the relief of the suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger". The evenings proceedings are roneographed inside the fold. It lists 15 performances including arrangements for violin and piano; a "letter song: Rip Van Winkle"; other songs a recitation; "Italian boat song"; and a vocal duet. The performers include Mr. & Mrs. Rignold and Signor Steffani. Mr. & Mrs. G. Rignold are recorded as having traveled from Adelaide to Sydney on 29th January 1883 on the ship "Birksgate" and in October 1886 they traveled on the ship "Hanroto" from Hobart to Melbourne with Mr. & Mrs. Lohr all of them described as "Theatrical". Signor Steffani is listed in the Sand's Sydney Directory for 1883 at 129 Phillips St. and in 1895 as a "teacher of singing" at 56 Elizabeth St. ancestry dot com. In fact the performances by "professionals" were most likely money making efforts for the performers who traveled repeatedly between various ports in Australia. One wonders if the money collected actually went to relieve the suffering of "a destitute and invalided steerage passenger" unless that is Mr. Rignold or Mr. Steffani. The R. M. S. John Elder made voyages between London and Australia see article in the Sydney Morning Herald referring to arrival from London on 15 July 1885 just 6 months after this voyage. see nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13561966. It seems possible that this voyage was only in Australian waters as the Rignold's were already in Australia in January 1883. The cover of the program is hand painted with a background design of gingko leaves daffodils and a dragon fly with a tropical island view superimposed. On blue coated paper folded with the number 1 penciled at lower left of the front. In some spots the text of the reproduction is faded and it has been re-written by hand in purple ink. Short closed tear bottom edge. Folded folio 8 3/4 x 13 1/2". The paper is speckled with white dots akin to some unusual sort of bleaching perhaps related to the paper making process as it skirts the cover illustration. An unusual survival.

unknown

Australia; Emigration
A form letter addressed "To the Overseers of the Parish of Mereworth Kent" advertising cheap passages for "Families Labourers and Poor Persons" emigrating to Australia and the British colonies; "Shovelling out paupers"
London 1836. Very good condition. In 19th c. England the practice of assisted emigration of the poor was sometimes referred to as "shovelling out paupers". In 1833 the Colonial Land and Emigration Commissioners CLEC were set up to manage emigration to Britain's colonies. Under the plan some emigrants could qualify for a free passage if they were under forty years of age of good character having been vaccinated against smallpox capable of labor and from occupations such as agricultural laborers shepherds or female domestic and farm servants. Young married couples without children were the most desired candidates. This circular was printed just one year following the enactment of a provision in which the cost of emigration would be borne by the emigrant's home parish Section 62 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act. The parish-funded emigration was overseen by the Poor Law Commissioners. The annual report of the Poor Law Commissioners of 1836 shows that 18 parishes in Kent participated sending 320 emigrants at a cost of 1823. Many emigrants went to Canada due to its proximity to Britain but South Australia which was designated a colony in 1836 offered a free passage until 1841. The popularity of Australia surged when the discovery of gold made the news in 1852. The printed circular with manuscript date March 1836 and Parish name advertising passage to North America or Australia at 3 to 4 a head for adults. The form letter begins "Gentlemen I beg to acquaint you that I am ready to Contract for the Conveyance of Families Labourers and Poor Persons to the British Colonies in North America Australia and the United States and likewise to Victual them if required which I can do at a much less expense than having them found by the Vessel." "Our packets are Sailing from here for Quebec New York Philadelphia Boston & c. Twice every Week during the Season." The printed address at the top "2 Upper East Smithfield Near the London Dock Entrance London." The circular is signed "C. Ciriackes" or Christoffer Ciriackes 1755 - 1758 who in 1828 was a clerk for Messrs. Beatson & Co. merchants and was a witness in a case before the Old Bailey; he also appears in the London Planet of September 20 1840 as Christopher Ciriackes provisions merchant at Devonshire Place London Fields. However Ciriackes had his own problems as a debtor as he appears under the heading 'Court for Relief of Insolvent Debtors' on November 5 1840: "Christopher Ciriackes late of No. 4 Devonshire-place London-fields near the Cat and Mutton Tavern . out of business . Provision Merchant and General Dealer". London Gazette 13 October 1840 p2270. 8vo printed on cream paper folded into envelope shape and posted with rubber stamp and seal. The rubber stamp reads "Ing St. Corner Hill". Mailed March 8 and addressed to "Off of the Overseers of the Parish of Mereworth Kent". Original folds very faintly creased.

unknown
