Freemasonry
'Jubilee of Knights Templar in South Australia - Aug. 24th 1908' caption on a vintage photograph of the celebratory dinner
A gelatin silver photograph image size 150 196 mm on the original card mount 250 306 mm with the indistinct blindstamp of the photographer; the print has four tiny indentations a few light surface scuffs and some silvering-out; the mount has a few chips to the extremities it was framed at one stage; overall the condition is excellent. The verso of the mount has some pencilled notes by the framer not least 'stain out gilt printing' thus obliterating the photographer's details!; the client's name was Boucaut. This would be Sir James Penn Boucaut 1831-1916 three-times Premier of South Australia clearly visible in the foreground of the photograph. Sitting next to him is another prominent freemason Archibald Henry Peake 1859-1920 who was also to serve three terms as Premier of South Australia. One of Boucaut's sons Ernest Bertram Boucaut has later inscribed the verso of the mount: 'Jubilee Knight Templarly sic in South Australia. Alfred Masonic Hall Thursday Aug 24th 1908. E.B. Boucaut. Mathematics. MYDORGE Claude Jean LEURECHON and Denis HENRION
Examen du Livre des Recreations Mathematiques et de ses Problemes en Geometrie Mecanique Optique et Catoptrique. O sont aussi discutes & restablies plusieurs experiences Physiques y proposes
Paris: Chez Rolet Boutonn 1638. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Paris Chez Rolet Boutonn 1638 second edition/ 1630. Octavo 170 105 mm four parts bound as one volume xvi 280; 64 last blank; 63-106 12 index last three blank; and 39 1 blank pages with woodcut printer's devices on the four title pages and 84 illustrations throughout approximately 80 woodcut illustrations and a few type-set diagrams. There are five leaves missing from the 'Troisime Partie' F4 F5 G1 G4 and G5: pages 85-90 95-96 and 101-104. Nineteenth century half calf and marbled boards now lacking the leather corner-pieces revealing earlier full vellum boards underneath; covers a little worn; light tidemark to the bottom inner corner of the text block throughout; a little worming to the top blank margin of the first 25 leaves; insect damage to the bottom edge extending at most a few millimetres into the wide blank bottom margins; first title leaf dusty and a little soiled; the five missing leaves notwithstanding overall a very presentable copy. The second edition of Claude Mydorge's expanded edition and critique of this popular early work of recreational mathematics first published in 1624 and usually attributed to Jean Leurechon. Each of Leurechon's mathematical problems is reprinted here in roman type with Mydorge's explanatory notes and criticism following in italic. The third part albeit relatively insubstantial only 44 well-illustrated pages is devoted exclusively to fireworks and their construction which probably explains the few missing leaves. The subtitle is: 'Compose d'un receuil de plusieurs plaisantes & recreatives inventions de feux d'artifice plus la maniere de faire toutes sortes de fuzes tant simples que doubles avec leur composition le tout represent par figures sic' Comprising a collection of several pleasant and recreative inventions of fireworks plus the manner of making all sorts of rockets both single and double with their composition all represented in figures. This third part together with the second made its first appearance in a 1628 edition of 'Rcrations Mathmatiques' published by Charles Osmont at Rouen. Their authorship has not been established HEEFER Albrecht: 'Rcrations Mathmatiques 1624 A Study on its Authorship Sources and Influence' revised 7 October 2004. The fourth part 'Nottes sic sur les Recreations .' is by D.H.P.E.M. Denis Henrion Professeur s Mathmatiques. Claude Mydorge 1585-1647 French mathematician was a friend of Ren Descartes with whom he shared a strong interest in optics and the nature of vision. 'Mydorge's first major work was the "Examen du livre des Rcrations mathmatiques" published in 1630. As the title suggests it was a work on recreational mathematics and was effectively a critique of Laurechon's sic book on the theme 'Rcrations mathmatiques' by the French Jesuit Jean Leurechon writing under the pen name of van Etten first appeared in 1624. However it was through his work on conic sections that Mydorge made the greatest scientific impact' The Cambridge Descartes Lexicon online. Provenance: a 1713 signature on the first page; an early ownership inscription 'Michael Hutchins His Book' on a preliminary page; 'G.S. Kingston Sept 1834' on the front pastedown: Sir George Strickland Kingston 1807-1880 the South Australian pioneer engineer and politician deputy-surveyor-general under Colonel William Light co-discoverer of the River Torrens first Speaker in the House of Assembly. ANGAS George Fife
A vintage carte de visite photographic portrait of George Fife Angas 1789-1879 the influential South Australian pioneer
The albumen paper photograph 94 61 mm is mounted on the printed card 104 63 mm of The Adelaide Photographic Company. There is an example of the same image in the State Library of NSW a gift from a family member John Howard Johnson; it is dated January 1870. There are a few tiny surface scrapes to the bottom millimetre or so of the image and slight surface loss to the plain section of the mount adjacent to it but overall it is in excellent condition. The 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' has this to say about Angas: 'although his prominence in the foundation of South Australia has been somewhat exaggerated . he deserves full credit for the capital and settlers that he introduced into the new colony'. At least he put his mouth where his money was: he emigrated with his family in 1851 and spent the rest of his life in the colony. unknown

GILL ST. and others after S. T.
14 Views of Old Adelaide from Sketches in 1840-1849 by S.T. Gill F.R. Nixon S. Calvert and O. Korn
Adelaide: E.S. Wigg 1890. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Adelaide E.S. Wigg 1890. Oblong quarto 19 leaves all rectos blank comprising the gilt-pictorial title page by E.C. May 14 full-page tinted lithographic views with tissue-guards the 3-page list of 181 subscribers and the key to plate 5 between plates 4 and 5. Original gilt-decorated half maroon morocco and gilt-lettered brown cloth slightly rubbed at the extremities and lightly bumped on the rear corners; cloth lightly flecked; inner hinge a little loose at the title page; minimal light foxing; essentially a fine copy. Ferguson 9924e but we have seen any number of bindings identical to ours and none as described by Ferguson. He also states that 'The Mitchell Library copy has a pencil note: 200 printed in George Robertson's hand-writing'. In spite of this comment and the 181 subscribers' names in our experience the book is not as rare as these figures would suggest. The fact that this item is essentially the same as Ferguson 9807 with the Galbraith imprint under the gold blocking carrying the Wigg imprint and the Wigg binder's label on the rear pastedown leads us to suspect that the answer has something to do with this change of publisher after the book was printed. Correspondence on this matter is welcome. E.S. Wigg hardcover
