According to Abbey the atlas of plates was published separately for the second edition which was published in 1830 and printed in only a small number. Bastin p. 5: 'The book was got together with considerable haste and was published in 1817 in two quarto volumes. . .a total of 900 copies were published. Apart from its originality. . .the outstanding feature of the book is its 66 plates ten or which are coloured aquatints illustrating Javanese life and costume and the Papuan boy who accompanied Raffles to England in 1816'. The plates of this edition include all the plates of the first edition plus additional plates of Javanese antiquities and topography. Prideaux: 'a monumental work. . . still a standard book'. Von Hunersdorff: 'An influential work valued for the author's firsthand observations on the customs and condition of the Javanese under his administration as Governor General during the British occupation of the Dutch East Indies'. The text volumes printed in 1830 have a great deal of data much in tabular form including statistics populartion vocabularies etc. with much of the author's text describing the people and country in great detail. from natural history and anitiquities to musical instruments hunting methods literature games of skill language etc. All of the plates are present according to the plate list. A collection of ten vintage gelatin silver photographs each approximately 110 x 160 mm featuring the derailment of a South Australian 500 Class Mountain-type locomotive Number 506
The versos of all photographs are stamped 'The Advertiser . Adelaide . Krischock Photos copyright'. 506 'Sir George Murray' entered service in October 1926; it was withdrawn in June 1959 and scrapped three years later. We have been able to trace a couple of relatively minor derailments involving this locomotive but not this particular incident. The terrain and surrounding vegetation suggest to us the mallee country between Tailem Bend and the border; the clothing on the bystanders especially the two boys in their long woollen socks thick overcoats and school caps brings back childhood memories from the early 1950s. But the train wreck is the story and this series of photographs serves graphically to confirm the official SAR estimates of the total weight of the engine and tender at more than 220 tons. hardcover

Small quarto 209 � 170 mm a menu card comprising 3 printed pages front cover and the centrefold of 8 pages formed by folding a large sheet of card down to a quarter of its size and leaving it uncut and unopened; an original colour photograph 76 � 115 mm of the locomotive 'The Commonwealth Railways "NT" Class 1400 h.p. Locomotive "Gordon Freeth"' is mounted on the front cover; the toast list is loosely inserted. A narrow red ribbon is tied around the front cover near the hinge; all aspects of the item are in fine condition. Loosely inserted is the inscribed table card for the dinner of one Miss D. Pyatt. Dorothy Pyatt OAM 1918-2019 was a pioneer of the South Australian police force and one of the state's early female police officers. In 1951 she became the first woman police officer in Port Augusta and remained there until 1967. Accompanying this menu is Miss Pyatt's personalised invitation 140 � 190 mm to 'the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Commonwealth Railways' at Port Augusta on 14 September 1962.
