Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. Two complete issues, seldom found in such good and original condition. his is a most captivating substantial geographical account from an expedition into the heart of the amazing reefs stretching for nearly 1200 miles in the warm waters of tropical Queensland coast, from Torres Straits to Lady Elliot Island, to which collectively the legendary name "Great Barrier Reef" is applied; being a very descriptive report of the unique qualities of numerous islands and their dramatic changes as they are affected by the tides, possible movement of sea-level, and the cyclone season. With a scientific approach, the report entails much detail on the Bunker and Capricorn Islands, Sand Cays, the Lower Bench and its features, Cliffing, the Higher Bench and Platform, the formation of the Lower Platform on the Low Wooded type of islands. With a substantial section on the 'Low Wooded Islands', also referred to as the 'Island Reefs'. Two sketch maps serve to delineate the Queensland coast, and numerous islands including Lady Musgrave, Heron, Stone, Cockermouth, Houghton, Night, Sherrard, and Enn.

The subject of the book is the 1839 libel action counter-action for wilful and corrupt perjury and the counter-counter-action for libel involving George Milner Stephen South Australian Attorney-General and Crown Solicitor. The actions stemmed from Stephen's speculative land dealings in early 1839 and this lengthy account is drawn from the Supreme Court records the Government Gazette and newspapers of the day from May-September that year. Robert Thomas Government Printer and newspaper proprietor was the successful defendant in the second libel case. This fascinating expos� was almost certainly printed in at most a mere handful of copies and never released for general distribution. Original gilt-decorated blind-stamped slate-blue cloth all edges uncut; cloth a little rubbed and bumped at the extremities with the spine lightly sunned and marked with minimal expert restoration to the head; a few uncut edges a little creased; some offsetting from an illustration in one of the advertisements; an excellent copy. Ferguson 2850 calling the shipping table a plate. The frontispiece map a zinc engraving very closely resembles the one in 'Colonization of South Australia' by Robert Torrens 1835 as well as the Arrowsmith map in the 'First Annual Report of the Colonization Commissioners of South Australia' 1836 - see item 4 in this catalogue. This copy is inscribed to 'Edmund J. Wheeler / from the author / 21 Decr 1838' on the verso of the initial blank; Wheeler was the London manager of the South Australian Company. John Stephens 1806-1850 newspaper editor was employed 'about 1838 by George Fife Angas . to write emigration propaganda. Stephens's first notable work was "The Land of Promise" republished in 1839 as "The History of the Rise and Progress of the New British Province of South Australia". In that year his exposure of absurdities in T. Horton James "Six Months in South Australia" London 1839 ran to three editions. He also edited the "South Australian Colonist" on which Angas lost heavily; it was replaced in 1841 by the monthly "South Australian News" at a cheaper rate' Australian Dictionary of Biography - the too-short entry is well worth reading.
