16 pages. Plus a large fold-out colour map, measuring approximately 8.75 x 23 inches (22 x 59cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This early report was written at the time of great interest in New Guinea as the southern part was annexed by Britain in 1884. A Major Early New Guinea missionary work on the south east region of the island. With detailed accounts of indigenous peoples culture, topography, including records of cannibalism, customs, weapons, ornaments, etc. Chalmer's joined the mission in 1877 and in his time penetrated further inland than any other European. His first post was to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands in 1866, where "the community had been under the influence of Christian missions for decades. For years he had 'longed to get amongst real heathen and savages' and so rejoiced when he was assigned to work in New Guinea. He arrived in Port Moresby in October 1877." Chalmers travelled extensively, in some areas he travelled further inland than any other white men in his time. His main missionary activities were centred on the South-Eastern end of the country at South Cape, where he helped to build up a mission station among the Suau people." After a furlough in 1886/87 Chalmers returned to New Guinea to continue his missionary work but was killed near Goaribari Island in 1901.

This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. A primary source account of the first peaceful expedition into tribal regions of central Papua New Guinea, by a distinguished patrol officer who was native to the island himself, and who would later become a director in District Services and Native Affairs, as well as senior commissioner of the new Land Titles Commission. On this journey, the officer and expedition leader established good relations with indigenous tribes as he learned much about their communal lives. He further settled a new post, and provided a geographical survey which facilitated the first accurate map of the region. From April-December 1936 Ivan Champion led a major Bamu-Purari patrol to establish the remote Lake Kutubu patrol post, accompanied by patrol officer C.T.J. Adamson. Champion returned with a manuscript account of the mission, 123 pages in length, a condensed version of which is presented here in this foremost published account. As stated herein, circumstances caused a notable delay in publication. Champion's amicable experiences and collaboration with the indigenous Motuan and Koitabu inhabitants caused immense criticism of a patrol previously made by Jack G. Hides and his violent actions against native tribes, actions which Champion's expedition illustrated were unnecessary. In diary format, the officer describes arduous travel including river crossings and precipice climbing, as well as procuring fresh food, and pleasant interactions with native people, continuously making comparisons with Hides' erroneous reports. He also includes some striking photographic images of the tribes, their dwellings, canoes, and more, as well as a route map which again compares his tracts to those of Hides. Champion has been called "the last great explorer of Papua" and his book, 'Across New Guinea from the Fly to the Sepik' is now a classic in exploration.

Charles Joseph La Trobe first Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria. Letter dictated to his daughter Nelly sending affectionate remembrances to 'Dicky' future Sir Richard Harington. With ALS to Harington from his father mentioning La Trobe.
La Trobe's letter from Clapham House Lewes Worcester; 26 December 1870. Harington's from Whitbourne Court Worcester; 29 May 1872. La Trobe took up the lease of Whitbourne Court in 1858; Clapham House was his final residence and place of death. The recipient of this letter was the future twelfth baronet. His father the eleventh baronet had married the daughter of the local vicar Robert Biscoe in 1860 and would purchase Whitbourne Court in 1877. La Trobe had made Whitbourne Court his home on return from Australia no dounbt leading to the acquaintance of these parties.ONE: Letter from La Trobe to Richard Harington 1861-1931 the future twelfth baronet written on account of his blindness by a secretary possibly his daughter Nelly who often performed this role. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper. A touching letter beginning: 'My dear Dicky for tho' I am told you are now a schoolboy & mean to be a “man†you will remain my Dicky to the end of the world. I wish to send you a little remembrance but find that my bookseller cannot supply all I had selected as some books are out of print.' He says a little more on this present before continuing: 'Give my love & the good wishes of every member of my family to your father & mother & little brothers & assurances of our constant remembrance. I am too old to make or to wish to make new friends and I cling to the remembrance of the past. I wish I could tell your mother how constantly my thoughts & sympathies are with the dear family to which she belongs but I really hardly have heart to write to any one of them lately.' The letter signs off but not with La Trobe's signature 'Ever dear Dicky your affte old friend C. J. La Trobe'. TWO: Letter to the same recipient from his father Sir Richard Harington 1835-1911 eleventh baronet. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper. The letter contains the following brief reference to La Trobe: 'Mr. La Trobe is staying at Broadwas: he dined with us on Monday night & asked after you.' Other topics include: the son's gift of 'a very nice artificial minnow' Bobby's whooping cough a present for Charly and presents of stamps from uncles Vincent and Henry.
