Original plain papered boards all edges uncut; spine later renewed over a century ago with matching paper retaining the original paper title label discoloured and chipped; extremities of the boards a little rubbed bumped and worn; covers a little marked and discoloured with three small light stains to the front cover; pastedowns replaced when binding repaired with the original flyleaves offset and very slightly foxed tipped back in; half-title and title leaves a little offset; a very good copy internally excellent. Ferguson 2056 not noting the binding. Inscribed to 'The Honorable Fox Maule M.P. from the Author' at the head of the title page. The flyleaf carries the ownership signature of R. Kyffin Thomas 'from A.W. Piper / March 3 1906'; a pencilled note from Piper presenting the item is loosely inserted. Robert Torrens 1780-1864 'officer of marines political economist and colonization commissioner'; his 'economic writings are of much importance in the development of economic theory' DNB. In the preface to this book he writes: 'The art of Colonization is based upon the science of wealth; and the rules of the art are principles of the science naturally applied. In replying to objections and in explaining the plan and in unfolding the prospects of the New Colony the Author was naturally and indeed necessarily led into discussions upon some of the fundamental doctrines of Political Economy. In some of these discussions as it is believed new and not unimportant views have been opened'. Not least he was the father of Sir Robert Richard Torrens the lands title law reformer after whom the Torrens system is named. Fox Maule 1801-1874 second Baron Panmure and eventually eleventh Earl of Dalhousie 'sat in the House of Commons in the liberal interest in 1835-7 as MP for Perthshire'; Torrens retired from the House in 1835. Arthur William Piper 1865-1936 was a South Australian Supreme Court judge; Sir Robert Kyffin Thomas 1851-1910 was general manager and joint proprietor of the South Australian 'Register'. Small oblong octavo 8 pages plus a folding colour bird's-eye view of the suburb 'as it will appear when developed' 220 � 355 mm and a folding plan of the entire development area 225 � 362 mm but lacking the large centrefold map. This is referred to on the latter plan which has printed in the bottom margin: 'See enlarged plan at centre of brochure' below 'Portion left of dotted line now open for selection'. Saddle-stapled bright red wrappers with the full title lettered attractively in gilt on the front cover; small light tidemarks to the leading edge of both covers with minimal impact on the leading edge of the four leaves; text centrefold detached from the staples; trifling signs of age and use including a relatively modern inkstamp - LoGIC - inside the front cover and on the blank verso of the plan at the rear; overall a very good copy. The 'Beautiful track sic of country nestling at the foothills of Adelaide has . been chosen by the South Australian Government for the purpose of establishing a modern Garden Suburb. The design is the work of the Government Townplanner and embodies the most useful and proved ideals in present day townplanning practice. In honour of the memory of Colonel Light South Australia's First Surveyor General the suburb has been officially named "Colonel Light Gardens". Special attention is directed to the fact that the land is available for application by any person and is not set apart for the exclusive purpose of settling returned soldiers' introductory note. This last point is apposite: the land under development was 'late Mitcham Military Camp'. The man behind the plan was Charles Compton Reade 1880-1933 who was offered by the State Government of South Australia 'a new engagement as town planner from 1 July 1918 for a period of two years'. Frustrated by the realization that 'decent people cannot attempt to do decent work for the good of Australia without personal malice and misrepresentation to hinder them' he sought greener pastures. He 'was the first government town planner in the Federated Malay States in 1921-30 . From 1930 to 1933 he was director of town planning and development for the Protectorate of Northern Rhodesia . On 16 October 1933 Reade arrived in Johannesburg to become town planning expert for the Rand and Pretoria. He attended a meeting of the Witwatersrand joint town planning committee and offices were engaged for him. On Saturday 28 October he was found shot dead in his hotel room with a revolver beside him. Enquiries made by the "Rand Daily Mail" revealed that he had been "suffering from repeated attacks of malarial fever and was much depressed as a result"' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. A cabinet maker's manuscript specifications book written in ink on 167 pages of a vintage cash book 405 x 165 mm bound in half suede and cloth now a little worn at the extremities; there are also another 130 blank leaves
There are details of all component parts for approximately 230 items of furniture with hand-drawn illustrations included for about 155 of them of which 90 are quite charming miniatures. There is a small comprehensive alphabetical index booklet mounted inside the front cover. A small piece has been snipped from the head of the flyleaf leaving only the handwritten word 'Factory'. Internal evidence suggests an Adelaide business styles of bedsteads are 'Enfield' and 'Prospect'; of clocks 'Gawler' 'Rundle' Sturt' and 'Pulteney'. Undated but possibly the 1920s. unknown

Pictorial wrappers stapled through the inner margin with minimal expert conservation to the spine and the leading edge of the front cover; trifling signs of use; an excellent copy. 'We have pleasure in submitting this our First Illustrated Catalogue of General Hardware' foreword. Henry James Cowell 1855-1935 born in Clarendon SA became a timber merchant at Norwood in 1876 and his brother James William Cowell 1856-1910 joined him in 1880 henceforth trading as Cowell Brothers. Henry James Cowell then retired from the business and practised as an architect in Adelaide from 1888. His brother 'continued to manage Cowell Brothers at 45 The Parade Norwood timber merchants and general ironmongers steam saw and moulding mills'. The firm expanded into the city and Port Adelaide and eventually became Cowell Bros & Co. Cowell family history notes by Reg Butler online. The title of this catalogue fails to mention a major part of its contents an omission made good in part by the inclusion of two copies of the 'Price List of Mantels and Grates' dated 1 May 1925. Pages 23-44 are devoted to mantels depicted in large illustrations at no more than two per page. The excised leaf has been taken from this section. Not in Trove. The Company paperback

East Bros. & Coy. Ltd. Agricultural Implement Makers Mallala South Australia label on an album of trade photographs and printed ephemera
A screw-bound album 205 x 295 mm worn marked and lacking one screw containing 46 original gelatin silver photographs of the company's products generally 110 x 70 mm or the reverse seven pages extracted from a printed catalogue issued by the company as East Bros. and Co. two pages of simple technical drawings including details of the wing and heel of some plough-shares about fifteen thin trade catalogues or leaflets from other companies mainly Horwood Bagshaw and Lister and loosely inserted a four-page brochure for the East Bros. & Coy. Ltd. Patented Baglifter. From internal evidence the bulk of the material in the album would appear to date from before the change of business name in 1933 as outlined in the potted history below. The company was founded by Mathew Henry East 1861-1940 in Mallala approximately 60 kilometres north of Adelaide in the late 1880s. He 'patented the prong mould board plough skeleton board which proved to be a gigantic success in heavy sticky soil. He was among the first of the plough makers to make the stump plow of four wheels. The plant in the factory was rather crude as most of the machinery was designed by M.H. East himself and to drive the plant a horseworks was necessary. This condition of manufacture continued for several years and was eventually replaced by an oil engine. In 1906 two sons . joined their father in the business and the trade name was altered to East Bros. & Co. From 1906 until the outbreak of World War I the seasons were prosperous and trading in farm implements made rapid strides. In 1914-18 the World War I period manufacturing was somewhat slowed down because of scarcity of materials. In 1933 East Bros. became East Bros. & Co. Ltd. Mathew Henry East died on 7 October 1940 just short of his eightieth birthday. The business he had started continued to operate for a further 30 years until its closure on 7 August 1970. He was recognised by the Commonwealth for his contribution to South Australia by the naming on 13 April 1976 of East Place in Kambah ACT' Mallala page on the 'Now and Then' community heritage wiki website. One rarely encounters trade catalogues like this a warts and all nuts and bolts prototype cobbled together for in-house use rather than a slick commercial production designed to entice the consumer. Flush-cut quarter cloth and pictorial card covers lightly marked and creased; an excellent copy with a local agency stamp and contemporary inscriptions on the initial blank page. Three pages at the rear are devoted to 'Historic Surveying Instruments': these include an illustration of Lieutenant E.R.G.R. Evans 'surveying with a "Cooke" theodolite in the Antarctic. Six special instruments as above were made for the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-11 one of which was used to locate the South Pole by the ill-fated Scott party'. Other illustrations relate to the 1921 Shackleton-Rowett Expedition and the 1922 Mount Everest Expedition. The Company paperback
