‎CHEESMAN, L. Evelyn.‎

‎The Island of Malekula, New Hebrides.‎

‎18 pages, including 2 sketch maps. Plus photographic plates. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a fascinating account of a two-year expedition in the New Hebrides, focusing on the twelve months spent on Malekula, the second largest island of the group, being 46 miles long and 26 miles wide, and being densely forested from the shore-belt to the top of the hills. The remainder of the time was spent on four other islands with six weeks on Vanua Lava, Banks Islands. The natives of Malekula were Malenesians and were reported to be quite primitive, still unuaccustomed to caucasians exploring their land. This first-hand account reveals indigenous customs and beliefs, implements and their purpose, and also discusses cannibalism. Two previous surveyers, Mr. McPahail and Mr. Deacon both died of blackwater fever before completing their work on the island. Their untimely deaths made it difficult for Miss Cheesman to later enlist native guides to accompany her, as they believed that death was always due to supernaural interference. Unwittingly, Cheesman earned a reputation of being some kind of super-bush-devil and was indeed able to achieve her objectives.‎

‎CHEESMAN, L. Evelyn.‎

‎The Mountainous Country at the Boundary, North New Guinea.‎

‎8vo. 19 pages, plus a sketch map and several photographic plate illustrations. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Engaging descriptions of eminent entomologist and author Lucy Evelyn Cheesman's journey to Vanimo, then north to Humboldt Bay (Tepati) and the Cyclops Mountains, with further excursions to hill villages in the boundary mountains of Papua New Guinea, from where she intended to collect twenty thousand insects for the South Australian Museum. Vivid anecdotal descriptions of encounters with the Tepati people; the people of Molol and Wanimo; incidents with crocodiles; life of the indigenous people in the villages near Vanimo; Vanimo itself and the efforts of the local mission there run by Father Hittenberger and Brother Michael. Cheesman devotes a lot of text to the 'forest people and hunters' of Krissa, recounting their ritual 'kill-song' connected with the pig hunt and their frightening beliefs in the mysterious 'sangumen' or sorcerer. Notable geographical detail includes descriptions of the Oinake Massif and Mount Oinake with its breath-taking cliffs of vivid colour, contrasts of bright green madreporic shrubs against dramatic purple shadows and stark white limestone.‎

‎CHEESMAN, L. Evelyn.‎

‎Two Unexplored Islands off Dutch New Guinea: Waigeu and Japen.‎

‎8vo. 8 pages, plus 2 full page sketch maps and photographic plate illustrations. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Significant for its early account of biodiversity in the now protected "Coral Triangle" of the Pacific, Cheesman's succinct and well illustrated primary source reveals highlights of an entire year of entomological research on little-known islands of the Pacific, just north of the Dampier Strait, in Papua New Guinea, on behalf of the Natural History division of the British Museum. The splendid coral reefs of Mayalibit Bay, limestone mountains and formations, a wealth of exotic vegetation, mangrove swamps, fauna and reptilia are but a few features examined. On the volcanic Mount Nok she set up camp, where she interacted with native inhabitants of small villages, remarking on their language, education, and on previous feuds with "Bush Tribes.' On Japen island she first establishes camp on Mt. Baduri, from where she collects samples and observes birds. before relocating to two other locations. In the tropical forests for six months, many samples were acquired, and a remarkable storm was documented.‎

‎CHRISTIAN, Frederick William (1867 - 1934).‎

‎The Caroline Islands. Travel in the Sea of the Little Lands.‎

‎New York, Charles Scribner´s Sons, 1899. 4to. mayor, XIII - 412 pp. Con 43 láminas fotográficas, 3 planos y dos mapas plegados.

‎Christie, Manson & Woods (Australia) Limited‎

‎Australiana; Printed Books and Maps Golden Cockerel and Other Private Press Books A Silver Mounter Emu Egg the Properties of Harold Finnis M.B.E. and from Various Sources‎

‎Melbourne Victoria Australia: Christie Manson & Woods Australia Limited Christie's 1978. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Very good. The format is approximately 7.25 by 9.5 inches. 71 1 pages. Laid in is an Additional Lots listing bid sheets and after the auction results. The commercialization and global expansion of Christie’s and Sotheby’s post-World War II laid the foundation for many methods and practices adopted in art auctions in Australia particularly after the arrival of Christie’s in 1969. The key figure in establishing an Australian branch of Christie's was the Australian-born William Spowers who essentially co-founded it with Len Voss Smith in April 1969. Spowers had been educated at Geelong Grammar in Victoria and joined the Army in 1942 transferring to the British Army the following year. While serving in the army overseas he subsidized his pay by buying books and manuscripts and selling them in London. This is how he first encountered Christie's which he joined after leaving the Grenadier Guards in 1960. In 1970 he was Director of the Department of Books and Manuscripts at Christie's in London as well as a Director of Christie's Australian branch. Spowers had close family ties with Australia and his relationship with his godfather the then Governor-General Lord Casey was instrumental in the appointment of Christie's initial Australian representatives; Sue Hewitt and Joan McClelland were approached on the recommendation of Casey’s wife after Spowers consulted her. Spowers believed that a Sydney branch of Christie's could provide a service to Australian collectors by securing Australiana Australian art books and manuscripts in Europe and auctioning them directly in an Australian saleroom. Harold Jack Finnis 1889-1980 administrator was born on 29 August 1889 at Parkside Adelaide. Educated at Malvern Grammar and Unley Public schools and at Muirden College for Business Training in 1905 Harold entered the State public service. In 1911 Finnis had moved from the Produce Department to the Agriculture Department; four years later he was assistant-secretary to the Advisory Board of Agriculture librarian and editor of the Journal of Agriculture; by 1921 he was secretary to the board. The work of the board grew and he claimed responsibility for two innovations: the establishment of women's branches 1917 and a press news service. In 1925 he was appointed secretary of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia. Next year he directed his first show at Wayville. As secretary until 1955 and director-secretary 1955-59 the 'unflappable' Finnis presided efficiently and firmly over increasingly larger and more complicated annual shows rising attendances the construction of buildings new uses for the grounds and to some extent also over his governing council. He was appointed M.B.E. in 1939. During World War II the showgrounds were used for defense purposes. From 1940 to 1946 Finnis was secretary of the Business Administration Committee which reported to the Department of Defence Co-ordination. In 1947 he resumed his administration of the R.A.H.S.S.A.'s affairs oversaw the restoration of buildings and grounds and despite continuing austerity held the first postwar show. His personal qualities 'contributed towards the marked progress' of the organization. With his work on the Libraries Board of South Australia 1942-74 and the board of commissioners of the National Park 1943-63 his civic service became more varied and demanding. He was a governor 1947-69 of the Adelaide Botanic Garden a council-member 1950-75 and president 1950-53 of the State branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia president 1957-68 of the Pioneers' Association of South Australia and chairman 1961-75 of the State working party of the Australian Dictionary of Biography. As office-bearer member or founder he was associated with numerous other organizations and became known as 'Adelaide's busiest man'. A commanding figure over six feet tall Finnis had a no-nonsense time-saving manner. Gardening and collecting Australiana were lifelong interests; he also found time for historical research and gave talks and published papers on his findings.
