Library reference sticker by the spine foot. The Fertiliser was established as Shirley's house journal. Five thousand 5000 copies of the quarterly magazine were distributed at the outset. Mainly devoted to agricultural topics each issue has a section called Women's Sphere with cooking handicraft and fashion information and a children's page. Sydney: 'Sydney Morning Herald' 1941. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Sydney 'Sydney Morning Herald' 1941 and 1942. Large quarto 84 to 88 pages each issue extensively illustrated in colour and black and white; bound-in in the first number is a small two-part perforated order-gift subscription form. Binder's cloth retaining the original colour-pictorial card covers with the rear cover now bound in immediately after the front cover in each case; cloth a little flecked; edges a little foxed; endpapers discoloured; light foxing to a few leaves adjacent to the boards; in excellent condition. The fourth and final series of 'Art in Australia' comprised only six quarterly numbers between March 1941 and August 1942. They were a marked departure in all respects from the previous 94 numbers of the journal which commenced publication in 1916: new editor new format new emphasis on international art. The editorial in the first issue spells this out succinctly: there will be 'a complete change in appearance and methods of production with a broadening of policy. In the past "Art in Australia" has been almost entirely devoted to the painting sculpture and architecture of this country. Luxurious productions from France England and other countries were available to inform the artist student and art-lover of the work and activities of the art world outside. But the barbarity unleashed in Europe is destroying much of the art of the past and present and has made it impossible for periodicals we prized so much to continue production. The countries of their origin have fallen under Hitler's yoke men responsible for their production - artists and writers - killed art galleries and elaborate printing and processing plants blown to bits. But Art cannot die and we in Australia can and will carry on our efforts to preserve encourage and foster the culture our enemies would destroy. In spite of paper shortages and many other difficulties "Art in Australia" will play its widened part by presenting the art of all countries all periods and all schools'. <p>Peter Bellew modelled its visual excellence and intellectual content on 'Verve' and 'under his stewardship the art historian and director of London's National Gallery Sir Kenneth Clark declared it "unquestionably the best art magazine being published today anywhere in the world"' Harding and Morgan: 'Modern Love - The Lives of John and Sunday Reed' 2015. Notwithstanding the end came without warning: Series 4 Number 6 August 1942 the last one published with a strong and parochial editorial about the 'Need for War Artists' contained no hint of its fate. Adelaide: 'Printed for the Publishers by Hunkin Ellis & King' 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide 'Printed for the Publishers by Hunkin Ellis & King' 1925 to 1928. Tabloid 48 monthly issues bound as one volume approximately 12 pages per issue each with the large pictorial masthead and illustrated advertisements. Contemporary quarter cloth and marbled papered boards lightly rubbed with slight wear to the extremities; acidic paper uniformly tanned; minimal signs of age and use; in excellent condition. The editorial in Volume X Number 12 31 December 1928 states that 'It would be a pity for this independent non-party and outspoken monthly to go out and we hope such an event will not happen but after carrying on the paper for ten years we feel with advancing years that we cannot longer bear the strain of the extra work involved in its publication. Perhaps we may be able to sell it .'. Apparently they were unable to do so and this proved to be the last issue of the journal. <p>From Volume IX Number 3 March 1927 the last words in the subtitle were changed from 'Progressive Farmers' to 'Progressive People'. However a far more radical transformation had occurred earlier foreshadowed in the second issue in this run: the front cover proclaims 'Special this issue -- The Proposed Aboriginal State'. Genders had been appointed to the general committee of the Aborigines' Friends' Association in early 1924 but he established the Aborigines' Protection League in November 1926 with Dr Herbert Basedow as president and himself as honorary secretary to promote the cause of an 'Australian Black State' in the Northern Territory. The final issue records that the APL had been 'largely instrumental in awakening a world-wide interest in the position of the Australian aboriginals and as the official organ of the League "Daylight" may justly claim to have assisted in this much overdue movement'. <p>'Contested Destinies: Aboriginal Advocacy in South Australia's Interwar Years' by Robert Foster 'Aboriginal History' Volume 42 2018 available online provides much detail on Genders 'Daylight' the Australian Black State and the APL. Octavo three issues 48 53 and 48 pages with 2 full-page illustrations by Jean Langley in the first number and 2 pages of facsimile manuscript poetry by Joy Hester plus a plate in each number in the third one it reproduces 12 Charles Blackman paintings from his exhibition at the Bray Gallery in Melbourne in May of the previous year. A subscription form is loosely inserted in the third number. Wrappers with the titles in facsimile holograph on the front cover; the second number shows mild signs of use; overall an excellent run. 'Six years ago Ern Malley lived and died in Australia. Child of the unintended creative act of two other Australian poets he became overnight the most significant figure in the current literary scene. Alike as poet and as a symbol of creative living . Who can doubt that he did in fact live. And now we hope his spirit will live on in the pages of this Journal' introduction to the first number. The lengthy editorial in the third number indicates their hope is a little forlorn 'we cannot congratulate either our contributors our readers or ourselves' and it concludes with a half-page explanation - clearly called for - of 'Who was Ern Malley'. It was another thirteen months before Volume 1 Number 4 appeared; Volume 2 Numbers 1 and 2 followed at six-monthly intervals before the journal ceased publication for want of subscribers. 3 items. Large octavo 1939 and 1949 and octavo the other six volumes ranging from 60 to 110 pages with illustrations plus plates in the pre-war years and 1949. Overlapping black card covers printed in red and yellow 1935-48 and flush-cut three-colour wrappers 1949; minimal signs of age and use with a few minor blemishes 1935: front cover creased foot of the front joint a little split with trifling loss to the ends of the spine and rear top corner; 1938: head of the front joint split; 1946: covers rubbed at the extremities; overall in excellent condition. 'Phoenix' supplanted 'The Adelaide University Magazine'; in turn it was supplanted by 'Angry Penguins' during the war years. The post-war issues generally do not compare with those from the 1930s which contain illustrations often linocuts or woodcuts by Dorrit Black John Dowie May Voke and Rex Wood and literary contributions by Max Harris Flexmore Hudson Rex Ingamells Geraldine Jay Charles Jury Donald Kerr and Paul Pfeiffer among others. The issue for 1949 is the post-war stand-out with contributions by Andrew Abbie Brian Elliott Max Harris Charles Jury Hal Porter Orde Poynton Thorburn Brailsford Robertson and Geoff Wilson assorted artwork including the front cover. 8 items. Numbers 1-8 saddle-stapled in the original wrappers some tanning; one issue with chips to the overlapping edges; Number 1 with two small ink emendations; Numbers 9-25 bound in three volumes of black cloth lettered in gilt on the spines all but five lacking the wrappers; a few issues shaved at the head or foot; some tanning to the paper; a few ownership signatures and pencil annotations; an excellent run. Number 18 is inscribed and signed by the editor 'For Miles Franklin with best wishes from Flexmore Hudson'. A 'with compliments' slip inscribed and signed by Hudson and a subscription form are loosely inserted. The subtitle later changed to 'The Quarterly of Australasian Verse' Numbers 13-14 'The Australian Quarterly of Verse Numbers 15-16 and finally 'The Australian International Quarterly of Verse' as the publication expanded to include a significant amount of material from international poets. Octavo 13 issues bound in one volume 148 pages continuous pagination plus the large folding supplement to Number 10 March 7 1891 a broadside 455 × 335 mm with illustrations. Contemporary flush-cut quarter leather and stippled cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; neat repairs to the leather at the head and foot of the spine; acidic newsprint used for the last two numbers uniformly tanned; overall in excellent condition. The recto of the large folding supplement to Number 10 contains the text with three line illustrations of an article that 'appeared originally in the "SA Register" in six short letters': 'Protection or Freedom Our Manufactories Our People and Our Land Values'. The verso of the broadside is devoted entirely to advertisements some illustrated with large engravings. The final issue of the journal was Volume 5 Number 5 24 December 1892. Although the Single Tax League of South Australia figures prominently throughout a notice printed at the foot of the last page of the first issue suggests the journal had a broader platform. 'The publication of "The Pioneer" is undertaken solely with a view to stimulate thought and promote discussion and if approved of it is hoped will find the ready support of all Friends of Reform. The labor involved is given voluntarily and gratuitously; any profits made will go entirely towards extending its range of operations.' The journal ran for 57 issues ceasing publication with Volume V Number 5 24 December 1892. Provenance: Arthur W. Piper 1865-1936 a South Australian Supreme Court judge with his small name-stamp and personal library number 677 on the front pastedown. Printed for the Proprietor and Publisher, A. Plastic comb bound card covers; extremities a little creased; a very good copy. 'This book is a copy of the notebook kept by Bombardier D.M. Forster in which she recorded her service with the 58th Searchlight Battery during World War II. The 58th Searchlight Battery was based in South Australia. It is believed that the original of this manual is the only one in existence and is now housed in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra' page 1. The notebook commences on 19 April 1942 and continues until 17 August 1943 and covers 'various aspects of anti-aircraft searchlight operation. Illustrates the role of women in the defence of Australia' 'Australian War Memorial' website. With the ink signatures of Nan Monck and Barbara James dated 9 July 1997. He states in the introductory paragraph to his foreword that he is 'keenly sensible of the fact that probably a book three times larger could have been written had it been possible to get in touch with the men of the Battalion who were in a position to know well the activities of their various Companies. <p>The story such as it is is correct as to salient facts and this is entirely owing to the fact that Colonel Carter soon after his return to Australia wrote a complete Diary of the Battalion's movements and operations from the early days in Egypt to the Armistice'. Very Good. A single leaf octavo printed recto only slightly marked with a marginal crease to a top corner; two light horizontal creases where folded for posting; in very good condition. The invitation headed '9th L.H.O.C.A.' 9th Light Horse Old Comrades Association invites members to give a hearty welcome to the old commanding officer Colonel William Henry Scott 1881-1960 who 'will be in Adelaide for a few days this month on a visit to his son'. The date for the event is not given but we suggest some time in the 1920s as Scott 'rose to brigadier in 1929' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Darley writes presumably as president of the association that 'it will be quite informal come along in your working clothes or anyhow you like and you need not get your hair cut for the occasion. If you clean your boots be sure to use NUGGET. Refreshments liquid only will be provided'.
