Each issue drop-title as issued in contemporary flush-cut cloth-backed papered boards; cloth renewed; boards lightly worn at the extremities and a little marked; the contents are in fine condition. Number 32 the first one in Volume 2 is a different format - shorter and wider - and the leading margins are folded back 40 mm. 'The small religious newspaper "Morning" was founded in 1900 by the gifted but unbalanced lawyer Paris Nesbit. The newspaper was initially used largely as a vehicle for his personal views on religion and Adelaide society. Nesbit unashamedly stated that the newspaper was his own voice and would be run "as Christ would if He were subject to the present limitations of my faculties" . Nesbit and his family - in particular his sister Agnes Benham - were interested in the "new thought" movement of the 1890s with its socialism and sexual reform. Early issues of the newspaper contained items commenting on Nesbit's short stint in the Parkside Mental Asylum in 1898 which he felt had been politically motivated by his enemies including the premier Charles Kingston. Kingston as well as other political and church leaders were criticised in early issues of the newspaper as were various Adelaide lawyers. Nesbit felt particularly strongly about religious hypocrisy. Benham contributed book reviews and periodic articles mostly on religious topics during the early life of "Morning". Much attention was given by various contributors many writing under pseudonyms to Benham and Nesbit's views that ideal marriage relationships were based on intellectual and spiritual connection. After just four months Nesbit handed over the editorship of the newspaper to the printer John Newton Wood who steered the newspaper towards an interest in spiritualism and vegetarianism' SA Memory online. This is a fantastic tribute to recount the merits and achievements of a once young apprentice to a shipping company at age 18, who later became one the world's most respected and accomplished explorers, and who commanded three voyages of discovery for Great Britain, and sailed around the world twice, the famous Captain James Cook. The first is a paper which was contributed to the Celebrations at Honolulu in August, 1928, a celebration with a threefold interest. The discovery of the Sandwich Islands was an event of unique importance in the story of the Hawaiians, and an incident of a typical and significant kind in the history of England; it is also the earliest recorded event in the history of what is now a State of the USA. On the topic of the Founding of British Power in the Pacific, Professor Holland answers in detail, the questions of what may have motivated the British Admiralty to unveil the age-old mystery of the southern tracts of the great Southern Ocean, and who sent Cook on those three long voyages. Cook, along with his patient crew of the Resolution hammered away at the Antarctic barrier, his iron strength breaking down under the prolonged strain of cold and privation, varied only by nauseating meals of highly salty meat and mouldy biscuits. Captain Cook has been hailed not only as the discoverer of several groups of islands in the Pacific, as the intrepid voyager who explored the coasts of New Zealand and Eastern Australia, but also as the chief explorer of the coast which is now Bristish Columbia, as the man who started the impulse which led to the North American-China trade, and thus laid the foundations of British power both in the southwestern and northwestern parts of the Pacific Ocean. Not only a renowned British Navigator and Explorer, this report includes fascinating detail of his career as a Hydrographical Surveyer, as well as an Astronomer. First and only edition of a detailed history of the ancient world, covering and comparing the cultures, religions, governments, (civil and ecclesiastical) legal systems, etc. of societies throughout the Old World. After a brief discussion of the pre-diluvian world, it covers the ancient Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe country by country or region by region, citing both biblical and classical sources. The Cellarius map appears to be based on the 1664 map of the same title by Johannes Strubius (Shirley 434, in the same projection and showing the same regions, but not including Australia), but its more accurate and up-to-date cartographic data appears to have been taken from one of the world maps in two hemispheres that were common from at least 1658 (Visscher's, Shirley 406). As in those maps, the coast of Australia shows a small break at 30 degrees south latitude. Cellarius (1638-1707) had produced a series of historical maps for his Notitia Orbis Antiqui, first published at Leipzig in 1701, and the present map may be based on one from that book.
