Very scarce. 200 pages. Captain Samuel Albert White was a wealthy Australian racehorse owner soldier explorer conservationist and amateur ornithologist. He fought in the South African War 1900-1903 reaching the rank of Captain which title he continued to use throughout his life. He made several private ornithological collecting expeditions across remote areas of Australia to Alice Springs 1913 Musgrave and Everard Ranges 1914 Cooper Creek 1916 Nullarbor Plain 1917-1918 Finke River 1921 and Adelaide to Darwin and return 1922 on behalf of Gregory Mathews. He was a foundation member of the South Australian Ornithological Association SAOA in 1899 and served as its President for several periods between 1904 and 1944. ‎Adelaide: Printed and Published by David Gall 1871. First Edition. Paperback. Fair. Adelaide Printed and Published by David Gall 1871 thirty-second thousand. Duodecimo 36 pages plus the pictorial title-cover and rear cover advertisement. Flush-cut card covers blue paper mounted on plain card originally sewn onto the text thread now missing; minor signs of use and age but nonetheless a decent copy with the contemporary ownership details of young 'Friedrich Busch 1873' in ink on the inside front cover. The outside rear cover lists nine titles including this one in Wickes' Educational Series for Australian Use. The works were 'specially compiled' by Edward Walter Wickes 1795-1868 'formerly Secretary to the Board of Education' who had also conducted his own school in North Adelaide in the 1840s and 1850s. A lengthy testimonial to him appeared in the 'South Australian Weekly Chronicle' 12 October 1867. In part it noted that 'he essayed to benefit the children of the working classes by the introduction of very cheap school books which he accomplished for he published books so cheap that the poorest were not debarred from purchasing them'. Despite the large numbers printed clearly there were at least 32000 of our title by 1871 and it appears to have still been published as late as 1891 copies of any edition are very scarce. Trove records a grand total of only five copies ranging from 1858 to 1891 with none from the 1870s. Printed and Published by David Gall paperback‎

His six ships sailed south around South America along Antarctica causing Wilkes to decide that Antarctica was indeed a separate continent. Other stops were at the Pacific islands of Tahiti the Samoas Australia and New Zealand. Brown cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and decorated in blind on the spine and both sides later rebacked retaining the original backstrip but with replacement endpapers; cloth a little rubbed marked and scuffed with the corners a little worn and bumped; occasional foxing; minor signs of use and age; a very good copy. For 'the most part the result of seven years' personal observation in the Colony of South Australia and contains from this source detailed statements on the prospects of labourer and farmer on Agriculture Stock Farming Building Gardening Manufacturing in various branches . and Mining and Mineral Productions'. There are chapters on overlanding 31 pages and Aborigines 52 pages. Significantly this copy contains numerous contemporary annotations in pencil on 25 pages. Many of the comments are highly critical. A fine example is the first one in the book at the foot of the second page of the preface below the author's remarks about the 'capacities and kindliness of the new home which may await all who are desirous to emigrate to the splendid country and exquisite climate of South Australia'. Excuse me what about the 'Drawbacks - Scorching sun and hot winds clouds of dust millions of flies and fleas and moschettos and ants swarms of rogues and lying rascals plenty of Thieves - also high Rents and high price of food and a deprivation of luxuries & sometimes of the necessaries of life'. Several of the complaints relate to prices especially of food; one of them is dated 'vegetables we find very dear. Mar 1849'. The author finishes a few pages about fires thus: 'In a large plain covered with such materials and on fire there would be little chance of escape; and few lamentations would be allowed as death would be too instantaneous. From this danger however so formidable in America the Australians are happily relieved'. The man on the spot retorts: 'Black Thursday is a witness that the Australians are not always so happily relieved'. ‎Autograph Letter Signed from 'William Kay' on board 'H.M.S. Tauranga at Sea' to someone male to whom he is very affectionate Louie "son" describing a journey to Australia with 'a lot of young Blue Jacket Boys on board'.‎

‎'H.M.S. Tauranga at Sea' undated but presumably on HMS Tauranga's maiden voyage to Australia 1890. 13pp. 12mo. On three bifoliums and a last single leaf. On aged and worn paper. A semi-literate but spirited epistle. Little is to be discovered concerning the identity of the writer. Addressed to 'My Darling Son' and signed 'good bye be good ever yours and yours alone William Kay' but with a few hints that the letter may not in fact be from a father to his son. Kay begins by stating that he is going to fulfil his promise and write 'a long letter'. Of the journey he writes: 'its not particularly rough but its the speed we are going that makes her roll we are now steaming past Deal at the rate of 19.8. so you can judge the rate we are going . we are ripping as the sailors call it. She's a very good sea boat so far. Shes alright down below but on deck oh my she simply washes down fore and half so we stay down below as much as we can. We had it rough last night off lands end but she behaved very well you would laugh if you were here we were standing on the forecastle last night watching her capers and a big fat wave came and washed us out of it she doesnt attempt to jump over them but she simply plunges right through it You ought to of seen us we was like a lot of drownded rats and then their was a yell how do you like Her.' He reports that 'we have a lot of young Blue Jacket sailor Boys on board we are going to take them out to Australia and I pittied them last night they were all sick and one of our little drumer sic Boys was that bad we had to take him to the Doctor in fact we thought he was going to roll up but he's alright now of course it doesnt effect us old seadogs'. He reports that the ship is going to Grimsby and Hull and then Torquay. He declares 'I shant kiss anybody else Annie Glenister ask me for one when I was at home but I wouldnt giver her one she said it was to bad of me she said if it was Lou Blane you wouldnt say no Not I. why should I you had better answer that one day when I was in No. 9 Union terrace the two annies got me down in the dressmaking shop and both of them kissed me what cheek but didnt I pay them out for it I got annie J. Down and capsized all her dressmaking gear all over her'. Docketed 'Very last letter. From on board ship.' HMS Tauranga was an Pearl-class Royal Navy cruiser built by J. & G. Thomson Glasgow and originally named HMS Phoenix. She was launched on 28 October 1889 and was renamed Tauranga as part of the Auxiliary Squadron of the Australia Station on 2 April 1890 arriving in Sydney with the squadron on 5 September 1891. She saw service during the Samoan civil war in 1899 and spent between 1901 and 1903 in reserve at Sydney before being assigned to the New Zealand division of the Australia Station. She left the Australia Station on 14 December 1904 and was sold for scrap in July 1906. 'H.M.S.
