‎pp. 598 + Colored Map. XLib. (withdrawn). Some foxing and damp stain. Original full leather binding. Front board and spine almost detached. Early ownership of J.G. Getchell. William Darlington (1782-1863) was a Chester County physician and botanist, and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from PA. He became a botanist at an early age, studied medicine, and graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1804. He went to the East Indies as ship's surgeon in 1806. He returned to West Chester in 1807 and was a practicing physician there for a number of years. He raised a company of volunteers at the beginning of the War of 1812 and was major of a volunteer regiment. Darlington was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fourteenth Congress; the Sixteenth; and the Seventeenth Congresses. He was appointed canal commissioner in 1825, and served as president of the West Chester Railroad. He established a natural history society in West Chester in 1826 and published several significant works on botany and natural history. Sabin 18596. The best edition. PA22‎

‎Belle et grande carte marine figurant les côtes de la Méditerranée entre Marseille et Piombino en Toscane. Exemplaire dont les terres ont été rehaussées au lavis d'encre de Chine. Elle a été dressée par Pierre Daussy, ingénieur hydrographe en chef de la Marine, et publiée en 1832 par le Dépôt Général de la Marine, par ordre du roi Louis-Philippe Ier, sous le ministère du comte de Rigny, secrétaire d'État au département de la Marine et des Colonies. La carte montre également la partie nord de la Corse jusqu'au golfe de Porto, d'après la carte d'Anne Louis Chrétien de Hell, et les îles de l'archipel toscan : Gorgona, Capraia, Elbe, Pianosa et Montecristo. En haut à droite figure l'avertissement aux navigateurs, en bas à gauche le cachet imprimé du Dépôt Général de la Marine. Les profondeurs marines sont exprimées en mètres. Bel exemplaire dont les terres ont été rehaussées au lavis d'encre de Chine. ‎L’auteur décrit longuement les îles de Trinidad, Tobago, Isla de Margarita et la côte du Venezuela. Entre observation empirique et récits anecdotiques, il aborde plusieurs aspects, tels que l'histoire naturelle, la géographie, la géologie, les structures socio-politiques et l'histoire. Il avait vécu comme planteur à Saint Domingue et à Trinidad et s'était inspiré de ses expériences là-bas. La grande carte dépliante à la fin montre la zone entre Isla de Margarita et Tobago, avec des détails sur l'embouchure du fleuve Orénoque au Venezuela. Jean-Joseph Dauxion-Lavaysse (1770-1830), collectionneur naturaliste, cartographe et géologue, planteur, abolitionniste et aventurier impliqué dans les bouleversements sociaux et politiques, fonde sa réputation sur la publication à Paris en 1813 du Voyage aux îles de Trinidad et Tobago. ‎Bell'esemplare della mappa murale del mondo di De Fer, pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1700. Il testo rileva che la mappa è una riduzione della mappa murale in quattro fogli del mondo dello stesso autore, pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1695. De Fer afferma che questa mappa è la prima a tenere conto delle osservazioni astronomiche della Royal Academy of Sciences. Sembrerebbe, infatti, che l'autore abbia consultato diverse fonti per meglio realizzare California, Giappone e Australia.L'Australia è mostrata come incompleta e ancora attaccata alla nuova Guinea. La Nuova Zelanda viene realizzata solo a grandi linee. Il fiume Mississippi ha la sua confluenza con il Golfo del Messico considerevolmente più ad ovest rispetto al suo vero corso. Sono inseriti molti altri nomi di luoghi e il commento scientifico è notevolmente dettagliato.Incisa da Johannes Van Loon, la mappa include vignette che mostrano tuoni, fulmini, tempeste e maree, vulcani, ecc. Nice example of De Fer's wall map of the world, first published in 1700. The text notes that the map is a reduction of De Fer's 4 sheet wall map of the world, first issued in 1695. De Fer states that this map is the first map to be prepared based upon the astronomical observations of the Royal Academy of Sciences. In fact, it would appear that different sources entirely have been consulted for California, Japan and Australia.Australia is shown as substantially incomplete and still attached to new Guinea. New Zealand appears in partial outline. The conjectural land bridge from Asia to America is still in evidence. The Mississippi River has its confluence with the Gulf of Mexico considerably west of its true course, based upon La Salle's eroneous reports. There are many more place names on this 2 sheet edition of the wall map. The scientific comentary is quite remarkable and detailed.Engraved by Van Loon, the map includes vignettes show thunder, lightening, tempests and tides, volcanoes, etc. Celestial observations are shown at the top.
