Rara e ricercata carta della Sardegna incisa da Fabio Licinio e disegnata da Giacomo Gastaldi. Al centro dell’isola, con caratteri grandi, si trova il titolo: SARDEGNA. Nel cartiglio in alto a sinistra è incisa una breve descrizione geografica dell’isola: Sardinia insula inter Africu[m] et Tyrrhenum pelagus sita magnitudine 562 mill. pas: fertilis admodum animaliumque varij generis abundans metallis argentarijs stagnis fontibus salubris prestantissima. Nella cornice inferiore del cartiglio troviamo la firma dell’incisore Fabius Licinius. Orientazione nei quattro lati al centro, con il nome dei venti: TRAMONTANA, MEZO DI, LEVANTE, PONENTE, il nord è in alto. Carta priva di scala grafica e graduazione ai margini. “La carta della Sardegna firmata da Fabio Licinio è un prodotto di derivazione gastaldina. Viene attribuita dalle bibliografie allo stesso Gastaldi, in quanto il Licinio era solito lavorare per il cartografo piemontese. Nelle raccolte cinquecentesche la carta si trova spesso stampata in coppia con l’analoga mappa della Corsica firmata dal Licinio (catalogo n. 389). Secondo Almagià questa carta è verosimilmente il prototipo di questa tipologia di mappe sulla Sardegna. Sotto l’isola denominata Tolata (presumibilmente Tavolara) viene disegnata un’altra isola, priva di nesonimo. Non sono note ristampe” (cfr. S. Bifolco – F. Ronca, Cartografia e topografia italiana del XVI secolo (2018), p. 2106. Fabio Licinio (1521 – 1565), figlio del pittore Arrigo, proviene da una famiglia di artisti. In qualità di incisore, nel 1544 incide l’Annunciazione dalla pala del Pordenone in S. Maria degli Angeli di Murano, su disegno realizzato dal fratello Giulio, allora diciassettenne, come si ricava dall’iscrizione sulla stampa “Hanc Pordenon(is) J(iulius) Lycinius excud(it) Fabio Ve. fe(cit)”. Lavorò per la corte di Vienna; a lui infatti vengono versati 45 fiorini renani per aver mandato una “cartella” a Massimiliano II. Nella sua Libreria del segno di S. Marco, a Venezia, vendeva le sue opere, incisioni, stampe di riproduzione, ritratti e carte geografiche. Licinio fu uno dei più abili incisori di carte geografiche del XVI secolo. Lunga e prolifica fu la collaborazione artistica e commerciale con il cartografo Giacomo Gastaldi; complessivamente, Licinio incise più di venti carte, non tutte disegnate da Gastaldi. Morì il 18 novembre 1565, e nel registro di morte figura come “stampador” mentre nel testamento dello zio Giovan Battista Licinio si fa riferimento a lui come “orese” (orafo). Acquaforte e bulino, impressa su carta vergata coeva, rifilata all’interno della linea del rame con restauro ricostruttivo di circa un cm per lato, per il resto in ottimo stato di conservazione. In the cartouche at the upper left is engraved a brief geographical description of the island: Sardinia insula inter Africu[m] et Tyrrhenum pelagus sita magnitudine 562 mill. pas: fertilis admodum animaliumque varij generis abundans metallis argentarijs stagnis fontibus salubris prestantissima. In the lower frame of the cartouche we find the signature of the engraver Fabius Licinius. Orientation in the four sides in the center, with the name of the winds: TRAMONTANA, MEZO DI, LEVANTE, PONENTE, north is at the top. Map lacks graphic scale and graduation in the margins. “La carta della Sardegna firmata da Fabio Licinio è un prodotto di derivazione gastaldina. As an engraver, in 1544 he engraved the Annunciation from the Pordenone altarpiece in S. Maria degli Angeli in Murano, based on a design made by his brother Giulio, then 17 years old, as can be seen from the inscription on the print "Hanc Pordenon(is) J(iulius) Lycinius excud(it) Fabio Ve. fe(cit)." He worked for the court in Vienna; in fact, 45 Rhine florins are paid to him for sending a "folder" to Maximilian II. He sold his works, engravings, reproduction prints, portraits and maps in his Libreria del segno di S. Marco in Venice. Licinius was one of the most skilled map engravers of the 16th century. His artistic and commercial collaboration with cartographer Giacomo Gastaldi was long and prolific; in all, Licinio engraved more than twenty maps, not all of them drawn by Gastaldi. He died on November 18, 1565, and the death register lists him as "stampador" while his uncle Giovan Battista Licinio's will refers to him as "orese" (goldsmith). Etching and engraving, impressed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed within the copper line with reconstructive restoration of about one cm on each side, otherwise in excellent condition. Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1665, firmata in lastra nel cartiglio con la dedica al centro. Edita a Bologna dalla tipografia Longhi. Giuseppe Longhi fu un attivo editore e tipografo, noto anche per una ricca produzione libraria. Sono molto famose anche le sue grandi vedute di città italiane, disegnate seguendo il modello iconografico dei panorami olandesi dell’inizio del XVII secolo ed integrate da una decorazione figurata tipica della cartografia olandese dei vari Blaeu, Janssonius e Visscher. Bellissima prova, stampata da 4 rami, alcune pieghe di carta e restauro in basso a destra, con parziale perdita del testo della leggenda, per il resto in ottimo stato di conservazione. Rarissima. Etching and engraving, circa 1665, signed in plate in the cartouche with dedication in the center. Published in Bologna by the typography Longhi. Giuseppe Longhi was an active printer and publisher, also known for a rich production of books. His large views of Italian cities are also very famous. They were drawn following the iconographic model of Dutch panoramas from the beginning of the 17th century and integrated with a figurative decoration typical of the Dutch cartography of Blaeu, Janssonius and Visscher. Beautiful proof, printed from 4 branches, some paper creases and restoration at lower right, with partial loss of the text of the legend, otherwise in excellent condition. Very Rare.
