Devant la vogue actuelle de la critique et de l'édition pour Jean Lorrain il importait de revenir aux sources de la composition en rappelant les conditions dans lesquelles furent écrites ces chroniques nouvelles contes ou romans qui ravissaient un lecteur aussi sévère qu'André Breton et inquiétaient parfois les nantis de la Belle Epoque. <br />Le livre que nous proposons est un recueil d'inédits de Jean Lorrain enrichi de reproductions en fac-similés conformes à la présentation et à la couleur des documents originaux : une véritable mosaïque de teintes et de portraits qui nous restitue par-delà les masques et le fard les différents visages de l'homme-écrivant. Le classement de ces cinquante lettres manuscrits ou envois autographes auxquels nous avons joint quatre portraits respecte la chronologie qui s'impose comme la seule sériation seyant à un chroniqueur. <br />Les notes qui les accompagnent sont autant de points de repère critiques et biographiques permettant un éclairage nouveau de l'oeuvre par les documents et inversement. Cette édition présente un autre intérêt. Elle révèle l'existence d'une correspondance suivie entre Jean Lorrain et Gabriel Mourey. Nous publions 25 lettres datées de 1889 à 1894 concernant les relations de l'écrivain normand avec ce jeune poète anglophile qui en plus d'avoir traduit Poe et Swinburne a contribué à faire connaître des Français les préceptes de Ruskin et les toiles des Préraphaélites. <br />Il n'a pourtant pas retenu l'attention des biographes de Jean Lorrain. Et c'est une erreur car l'auteur de Monsieur de Phocas semble avoir tiré le meilleur profit de cette amitié littéraire sans toutefois reconnaître la part d'inspiration qu'il devait à "l'ange Gabriel". From Collections Edouard Guillaume "Lotus Alba". Illustrated throughout. A charming novella from Jean Lorrain born Paul Alexandre Martin Duval a French poet and novelist of the Symbolist school. Lorrain was a dedicated disciple of dandyism and spent much of his time amongst the fashionable artistic circles in France as well as contributing to the satirical weekly Le Courrier Francais. Bound in full reverse calf with the original paper wraps bound in. Externally sound with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with small marks to the boards. A crack to the head of the spine with leather coming away from the text block slightly. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark.
