Organized by a group of old Reform colleagues under James Lesslie this report of two meetings as well as the address of the Central Committee with the object of raising a fund to purchase a homestead for William Lyon Mackenzie in gratitude of his labours and sacrifices for better government for the people of Upper Canada. The main body of the address pp4-15 gives a detailed review of Mackenzie's career. The committee was sufficiently successful as to purchase a house on Bond Street in Toronto for Mackenzie. Ex library bound in modern brick buckram spine lettered in white. Small library rubber stamps early and late and on page edges. First blank has a tape stain at bottom and a contemorary ink inscription at top upon which is the rubber stamped ownership of Egerton R. Young Egerton Ryerson Young Canadian author and Methodist missionary no relation to Egerton Ryerson. half title leaf has a tape stain and large corner clipped at bottom Young's rubber stamp over an 1860 pencil name but all text still present. Title leaf is a mess and defective: 2 cm trimmed from fore margin. Ryerson's rubber stamp over the pencil name at top large piece missing at bottom which has tape stains and some celloptape still present with loss of some of the last part of the subtitle and most of "Mackenzie" but imprint just escaped and almost all of General Contents on verso still present. Library rubber stamp present once on verso twice on recto. Table of Contents has some offset tape staining but no excision. Small chip short tears to fore margin of pp xxiii-xxiv repaired with celloptape no printing lost. A photocopy of a complete title page is laid in. The rest of the text is quite clean and unworn with very little foxing. The old ink inscription is difficult to decipher because of Young's rubber stamp. It may read "Dr M Gillquist / Colborne / From his most humble servant M.S.C." TPL 1929. Lande 859. Sabin 10577. Gagnon I-2196. Fleming 892. One of the most important documents in the history of Upper Canada. Written mostly by William Lyon Mackenzie it outlines the complaints and demands of the reformers who sought a more democratic and responsible government as against the then current stranglehold of the Family Compact High Tory Anglican oligarchs on the governance of Upper Canada. These grievances lead to the Rebellion of 1837 in Upper Canada lead by Mackenzie and in Lower Canada lead by Papineau.
