Lyon, Danny (and Ann Barliant, Editor)
MURDERERS A Film; The Story of Five Murderers in Three Different States
Bleak Beauty Video 2005. Jewel Case. New Unopened. A 30-minute film by Danny Lyon published by Lyon's own Bleak Beauty Video. Mostly available on Vimeo but here in expensive format quick for the pop-in/pop-out. Lyons is the courageous conscience-bound photographic documenter of the underside of daily life providing unflinching looks at those who are fed-upon by the feeders and how they evolve or devolve as the case or need may require. Only opened original publisher's shrink wrap to obtain text of liner notes. "After his ground breaking work as a photojournalist in the 1960's Danny Lyon turned to films making a series of non-fiction films in the 1970's and 1980's. With the recent recognition of the 2016 de Young/Whitney retrospective funds were provided to preserve these remarkable 16mm films. High resolution digital scans were made from the original A&B negative rolls under the close supervision of the artist. The DVD covers themselves first made for VHS tapes have been recognized for their power and realism." Danny Lyon Site

"Murderers: From the same team that brought you FIVE DAYS Bleak Beauty Films now brings you one hundred years plus life. Filmed and recorded by Danny Lyon and edited by Anne Barliant Murderers tells the story of five murderers in three different states. Beginning in New York City's East River in Manhattan we meet Jessie Ruiz fishing for stripers. Jessie is out after serving 8 and half years for beating a man to death with a baseball bat. "I didn't kill him" he explains "he died on his own." Inside the Tucker Unit of an Arkansas prison we meet Pinkie who talks of the many executions he saw during eight years on Death Row and Mojo who has done Thirteen years because he was with his friend when the friend murdered both his adoptiveparents. Then Harold Davey Cassel a.k.a "Dinker" the hero of Lyon's book "Like a Thief's Dream" describes a murder he watched in the bathroom. The film ends in New Mexico with Michael Guzman who first appeared in Danny Lyon's 1983 Feature film "Willie" describing with devastating emotion the abuse he suffered as a child. Guzman has been in for 25 years. This is a work of Dostoyevskian power and subtlety with music that underscores the pathos of the film." DVD liner notes. Bleak Beauty Video unknown

White DJ with b&w-photo illustration and black and colorful lettering; beige cloth over boards with grey lettering; 142 pp.; richly illustrated. Lyon, Danny
Pictures from the New World
Millertown NY: Aperture. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/Very Good. FIRST TRADE EDITION DANNY LYON'S OWN ANNOTATED COPY.
This copy Lyon's own was sent to the former executive editor of Camera Arts Fred Ritchen. Lyon's enclosed letter states "I've marked some pages which I think makes a good progression over the years showing a change in subject and style… For the most part I have also marked pictures that are less well known and often have only appeared in print in this book. Nothing was run by any magazines when the hard back was printed… P.S. I'll need this particular copy back when you're done as it is my own; though I'm sure I can get you another from Aperture" December 17 1982. The resultant May 1983 issue of Camera Arts is included as is a provenance letter by Tom Ridinger co-founder of Camera Arts stating this "must be the rarest copy of Danny Lyon's Pictures from the New World." Lyon critiques his most famous subject in this copy scrawling "A BAD reproduction of my BEST picture Bike riders" pg. 30. This copy features around a dozen pages with pencilled layout drawings and instructions and over a dozen pages marked with Lyon's original paper clips and sticky tabs. Danny Lyon was a twentieth-century photographic luminary who released Pictures from the New World in 1981 on the dynamic work of his past eighteen years. In the introduction he writes "In order to to make this book I have had to face directly everything I have done in photography…Now I give it back to you America from whom I took it all in the first place. The slate is clean and I am free to begin again." "Among a group of revolutionaries whose work rose to prominence in the late 1960s and '70s and transformed the nature of documentary photography - a group that includes friends and colleagues of Mr. Lyon's like Mary Ellen Mark and Larry Clark - the idea of conscience has been imbedded more deeply in Mr. Lyon's photographs than in those of all but a few of his contemporaries" The New York Times April 24 2009. The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography recounts"He was self-taught as a photographer and his first images document the social struggle. It was a pattern to be repeated throughout his career - to actively live with subgroups or participate with segments of society he would document. He became a member of a Chicago motorcycle gang The Outlaws before producing the book The Bike Riders in 1968. Later he spent time with construction workers stock care races prison inmates and peoples of the Third World to make his books and films" pg. 268. Millertown NY: Aperture 1981. Oblong quarto original cloth original dust jacket; custom silk box. Text block sprung from binding; very clean text. Dust jacket with only a centimeter closed tear and light toning. Also with: a letter from Danny Lyon about this copy an additional letter of provenance from Tom Ridinger and associated magazine copy. A significant ensemble illustrating Lyon's own assessment of his work. Aperture hardcover

A pioneering photobook that combines candid photography and forthright quotes from the bikers themselves. The monograph helped to shape the outlaw biker image in American pop culture and almost certainly inspired a young Dennis Hopper in directing the road drama film Easy Rider that was released a year after publication; signed copies are uncommon. LYON, Danny
The Bikeriders.
New York and London The Macmillan Company and Collier-Macmillan Limited 1968. . First edition; 8vo 234 x 158 mm 9¼ x 6¼ in; black & white photographs printed in offset photographs and text by Danny Lyon; small corresponding white paint mark to pp48-9 grey endpapers black cloth-covered boards titles stamped in silver on spine and rear photo-illustrated dust-jacket printed in black blue and orange light impressions to sides minor wear to extremities short tear to lower panel crease to upper flap a very good copy; ix i 94pp.
The Bikeriders is a seminal work of American photography. It is the first series in which Lyon immersed himself fully and subjectively into the lives of his subjects in a manner akin to the documentary style of 1960s-era New Journalism by writers such as Joan Didion Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe.

Lyon began photographing dirt track motorcycle races while at the University of Chicago purchasing a bike and attending meetings across the Midwest. Around this time he hitchhiked south to Cairo Illinois where he photographed his first demonstration and met members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee SNCC the youth wing of the civil rights movement. Lyon continued to work informally for the SNCC while finishing his studies. After graduating in June 1963 he joined the SNCC as its first staff photographer remaining in the role until mid-1964 when fraught internal politics and his own ambitions meant it was time to move on.

Lyon returned to Chicago in 1965 and continued photographing motorcycle races and track meetings. Work on The Bikeriders began in earnest when at the invitation of a mechanic repairing his Triumph he attended a meeting of the Chicago Outlaws and joined them as a member. Over the following year Lyon photographed and conducted candid interviews with these gang members. Later in a letter to a prospective publisher he described the Outlaws as 'probably the only thing like cowboys left in America'. By joining their ranks he demonstrated that he wanted to be one of them and could describe their way of life from the inside out.
The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century pp190-1; The Photobook: A History I p256; The Open Book pp236-7; Danny Lyon: Message to the Future pp15-21.
