Richmond Virginia: James Lyon 1799. Original wraps. Good . The June 1st 1799 maiden issue of "National Magazine" which represents the first magazine ever published in Virginia the first magazine printing of the Virginia Constitution and Kentucky Resolutions and "an extraordinary contemporary resource for the anti-Federalist Jeffersonian Strict Constructionist philosophy of the Virginia School a philosophy that Virginians developed to oppose the policies of Alexander Hamilton and the Washington-Adams administrations " from "The Remnant Trust". This the "first National Magazine" was issued in Richmond by its young publisher and editor James Lyon and was printed semi-quarterly. Six issues all told were published in Richmond "after which Lyon removed to the new seat of the Federal government". This orginal issue has been beautifully and skillfully re-bound in 1998 by the Thistle Bindery of Florence MA and has had both its original light-brown wrappers seemlessly bound-in. The wrappers show chipping along the edges and a degree of inevitable wear but miraculously almost no loss to the titling. Crisp new endsheets and thick card wrappers nicely protect the fragile original text which has held up surprisingly well. There's a bit of light forgivable offsetting to the body --and along the original endsheets-- and the Subscription page which shows that one "Prin Perkins" is to receive a six month subscription for the price of two dollars INCLUDES JAMES LYON'S STRONG SIGNATURE IN INK AS AFFIRMATION. Octavo 107 original pgs. plus an itemized laid-in letter from Thistle Bindery and a wonderful handwritten 2 pg. example of "Binder's Notes" along the new rear endsheets mapping out the care --and the technical processes-- that went into both creating such an elegant re-binding and protecting the original text. Elegante legatura novecentesca in cartoncino grigio muto. Piccola integrazione di carta al margine esterno bianco della prima pagina e nel complesso esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione e ancora in barbe. Prima assai rara edizione di questa importante opera del grande medico francese originario di Carcassone Jasn De Combe-Blance Janin. L'autore fu uno degli oculisti più celebri del suo tempo. Studiò a Montpellier ed ad Avignone. Divenne celebre per il primo intervento per l'asportazione di una cataratta fatta a Lione il cui successo fu totale. Si trasferì quindi definitivamente a Lione. Chiamato a Modena dal Duca di Modena risolse un grave problema di "Mephitisme" dei pozzi neri del Palazzo Ducale tanto da ricevere dal Duca il titolo di Medico-oculista ufficiale di Corte. L'opera è la prima mai scritta sull'argomento dell'eliminazione delle esalazioni perniciose dai pozzi neri e la sua uscita suscitò numerosi articoli in tutto il mondo. L'opera descrive molti casi pratici incontrati dall'autore presso palazzi reali, ducali, ville, grandi hotel compresa la sua esperienza al Palazzo Ducale di Modena. Prima edizione assai rara e ancor più rara per la presenza delle 8 pagine di supplemento. First edition rare.

"Le Poème de l'âme, cycle pictural et littéraire unique dans l'histoire de l'art français, occupe une place majeure dans le parcours artistique de Louis Janmot (Lyon, 1814-1892). Entrepris à Rome au milieu des années 1830, présenté pour la première fois en 1854, puis, après plusieurs expositions au rythme des Salons … Le Poème de l'âme, cycle pictural et littéraire unique dans l'histoire de l'art français, occupe une place majeure dans le parcours artistique de Louis Janmot (Lyon, 1814-1892). Entrepris à Rome au milieu des années 1830, présenté pour la première fois en 1854, puis, après plusieurs expositions au rythme des Salons parisiens, parvenu à une version presque définitive en 1879, il connaît en 1881, grâce à son ami Félix Thiollier, une diffusion plus large que les expositions dont il a bénéficié jusque-là à Lyon et à Paris, sous la forme d'un album, où les dix-huit tableaux et les seize dessins sont reproduits, accompagnés des deux mille huit cent quatorze vers qui en forment le commentaire. La présente édition reprend le contenu de l'album de 1881, augmenté d'un texte introductif de Patrice Béghain, et complété par la version peinte du Supplice de Mézence conservée au musée d'Orsay. Le cycle pictural du Poème de l'âme est présenté en permanence au musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon."
