Signed and inscribed invitation to the opening reception Saturday March 11 4-6 pm of the exhibition "Danny Lyon - Born to Lose: Vintage Prints from the 1968 Texas Prison Series" held at the Edwynn Houk Gallery on Fifth Avenue in New York 2000. Cover of printed card reproduces an illustrated handwritten letter from prisoner Billy George McCune to Danny Lyon dated April 22 1969. Signed on the inside in pencil and inscribed "OK Bob. Send it. Danny Lyon." McCune on death row for rape met Lyon in 1968 when the photographer was working on his book about the Texas Department of Corrections "Conversations with the Dead." Lyon made audio recordings of conversations with McCune which were aired many years later on NPR. He and McCume corresponded over the years with McCune sending many letters that included his watercolor paintings. His work was exhibited at Rice University in 1970 alongside Lyon's photography. Lyon wrote an introduction to McCune's autobiography and in 1980 McCune appeared in Lyon's film "Born to Film." McCune was released from prison in 1974. Edwynn Houk Gallery unknown

Beginning in New York City's East River in Manhattan we meet Jessie Ruiz fishing for stripers. Jessie is out after serving 8 and half years for beating a man to death with a baseball bat. Inside the Tucker Unit of an Arkansas prison we meet Pinkie who talks of the many executions he saw during eight years on Death Row and Mojo who has done Thirteen years because he was with his friend when the friend murdered both his adoptiveparents. Then Harold Davey Cassel a.k.a "Dinker" the hero of Lyon's book "Like a Thief's Dream" describes a murder he watched in the bathroom. The film ends in New Mexico with Michael Guzman who first appeared in Danny Lyon's 1983 Feature film "Willie" describing with devastating emotion the abuse he suffered as a child.
