First edition an important coverage of the native peoples that George Francis Lyon encountered while commanding Hecla on Parry's second expedition in search of the north-west passage; Field notes that "almost the entire volume is devoted to the narration of the peculiarities of the Aborigines of the Arctic regions". Commissioned lieutenant in 1814 George Francis Lyon 1795-1832 accompanied Joseph Ritchie's abortive expedition into southern Libya in 1818 having replaced Frederick Marryat publishing a well-received account of his travels in 1821 the same year that he was promoted commander and "appointed to the Hecla under the orders of Captain William Edward Parry in the Fury. The expedition Parry's second in the search for the north-west passage sailed on 8 May 1821 entered the Arctic region through Hudson Strait examined Repulse Bay and the neighbouring coast of Melville peninsula and wintered at a small island to the eastward of the Frozen Strait. The next summer they went further north and entered Fury and Hecla Strait but the season being then far advanced they turned back wintered at Igloolik lat. 69°21' N long. 81°44' W and came home in autumn 1823 as signs of scurvy among the crew made it inadvisable to stay. On 13 November Lyon was promoted captain and the following year he published The private journal of Captain G. F. Lyon" ODNB. The next year he led an unsuccessful expedition to Repulse Bay with instructions to continue the survey of the mainland Begun by John Franklin. His Private Journal proved popular and a second edition swiftly followed the next year. Octavo 204 x 127 mm. Engraved frontispiece and 6 plates after the author's sketches engraved by William Finden large folding route map musical score to pp. 134-5. Contemporary marbled half calf red spine label flat spine ruled and tooled in gilt marbled sides edges sprinkled brown and white. Armorial bookplate of Lord Blayney; either Cadwallader Blayney 12th Baron 1802-1874 or his father Lieutenant General Andrew Blayney 11th Baron 1770-1834. Binding rubbed light wear at extremities top edge dusty inner hinges partially split but firm occasional foxing and browning largely clean. A very good copy. ‎Après avoir participé au deuxième voyage de Parry (en 1821-1823), le capitaine Lyon (1796-1832) reçoit en 1824 le commandement du HMS Griper avec pour mission de poursuivre l'exploration du Passage du Nord-Ouest, dans le cercle arctique. Les instructions de l'Amirauté portaient qu'il devait atteindre Repulse Bay par la route qu'il jugerait la meilleure, avant d'explorer la côte le plus loin possible, au moins aussi loin que les expéditions précédentes. Mais terriblement malmené par les vents, pris dans les glaces, le navire fut obligé de renoncer à sa mission et de rentrer en Angleterre, en piteux état et non sans avoir perdu ses ancres. L'ouvrage, paru en 1825, vise à dédouaner son auteur de toute responsabilité dans l'échec, mais il décrit aussi parfaitement la géographie des lieux, ainsi que la vie des populations indigènes (les Inuits). Smartly bound in contemporary brown calf sides ruled in blind and gilt spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers and edges. Folding chart 7 engraved plates diagrams charts and illustrations to the text. From the library of the Chateau de Sancerre with their stamp to flyleaf. An excellent copy in a handsome binding. First edition detailing Lyon's attempt to reach the North West Passage through Hudson Bay on the HMS Griper. The voyage proved unsuccessful in finding the passage due to poor weather conditions. The work also describes the Inuit of the Southampton Islands and the author's scientific findings. George Francis Lyon 1795-1832 had made a name for himself accompanying Joseph Ritchie's scientific expedition in Africa. Lyon organized a publication of their findings on his return to London in 1820. He then accompanied Parry's attempt on the northwest passage on the Hecla in 1823 publishing The private journal of Captain G. F. Lyon the following year. Lyon was then promoted captain and appointed the Griper. "Lyon's instructions were to reach Repulse Bay by whatever route he judged best and from it to examine the coast of the mainland westward to the point where John Franklin's voyage had ended its survey. He sailed on 6 June but the season proved unfavourable and he returned to England in November." The route that he chose "for reasons that never became clear" Howgego took them south of Southampton Island approaching Repulse Bay through Roes Welcome Sound and required "navigating a labyrinth of treacherous shoals". Foul weather and high winds forced Lyon to return incurring the wrath of Sir John Barrow at the Admiralty as a result of which he was never offered another commission.
