Imola è stata la prima città italiana a ospitare questa specialità nella sua forma più evoluta: il Campionato Mondiale. Fortemente voluta da Francesco Costa, il 23 maggio 1948 si svolse la prima gara internazionale nel Parco delle Acque Minerali. Giunsero in Italia per la prima volta i pionieri nordeuropei di questo spettacolare sport che seppe appassionare fin dall'inizio un pubblico molto vasto ed eterogeneo. Dal 1948 al 1965, il Parco di Imola divenne il teatro di una festa straordinaria e acquisì la fama di luogo magico sia sotto il profilo ambientale, sia sotto quello della spettacolarità. Le generazioni più anziane ricordano ancora oggi con entusiasmo nomi come Marcel Meunier, Auguste Mingels, Bill Nilsson, Sten Lundin e Rolf Tibblin.
