Tome I : 1 frontispice, (4) ff., 131 pp., (5) ff., 89 planches dont 7 en double état (1,2,4,5,6,12,13bis et 17) et 2 planches réhaussées (le Tombeau d'Agnes Sorel, Abbaye de Jumièges); Tome II : (2)ff., 190 pp. Y compris le frontispice , (2) ff., 153 planches dont 2 bis. Bel exemplaire à grandes marges complet des 242 belles lithographies, la plupart en deux tons sur Chine appliqué. Exemplaire très frais. Joint une planche non numéroté insérée dans l'ouvrage (entre 21 et 22) et les 89 planches volantes (sur 100) provenant du très rare 3 ème volume (quelques rousseurs marginales). Demi-maroquin rouge à coins d'époque, dos à nerfs orné. Reliure de l'époque. Salissures, éraflures et épidermures sur les plats avec perte de papier marbré et perte de cuir aux coins. Chemise cartonnée pour les planches jointes.‎

‎L'avènement des chemins de fer et celui de la pierre lithographique ont permis l'essor des recueils de paysages romantiques dont "Les Voyages" du Baron Taylor sont à la fois l'ancêtre et le sommet du genre. Les planches sont des estampes originales, tirées hors-texte, dessinées par les plus grands artistes du moment. Inventée par Senefelder en 1796, la lithographie fut introduite à Paris en 1816 sous l'impulsion de Godefroy Engelmann. Taylor fit appel à ce dernier pour son ouvrage. Cette publication est, selon Brunet, lune des premières et des plus importantes productions françaises de la lithographie, née sous limpulsion de James Taylor, Charles Nodier et Alphonse de Cailleux. Exemplaire auquel on joint 89 planches dont 28 sur le Mont Saint Michel du dernier volume, très rare, car il n'a été tiré qu'à 100 exemplaires et qui n'est paru qu'en 1878. En effet, le Baron Taylor n'a pu admirer ses planches que peu de temps avant sa mort. De la bibliothèque du séminaire de Coutances avec cachets à l'encre bleue aux titres. ‎Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Im Besitz der Staatlichen Museen in Kassel befindet sich eine Folge von 50 Veduten von Rom und Umgebung, und zwar handelt es sich um Zeichnungen eines Niederländers des 17. Jahrhunderts. Diese Folge wurde erstmals veröffentlicht im Rahmen eines von der Verfasserin bearbeiteten Kataloges der niederländischen Zeichnungen des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts, herausgegeben von den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Kassel, der 1979 erschien. Das vorliegende Buch stellt eine Erweiterung jener kürzeren Erstveröffentlichung dar. Es war zu klären, wem die Zeichnungen zuzu-schreiben und wann sie entstanden sind und ob hier Aufnahmen nach dem Naturvorbild oder Kopien nach fremden Vorbildern vorliegen. Zusätzlich sind für jedes dieser 50 Blätter Darstellungen des gleichen Motivs von anderen Künstlern in den Techniken der Zeichnung und der Druckgraphik zusammengestellt. Die Zusammenstellung von Vergleichsbeispielen läßt erkennen, wie ein bestimmtes Motiv im Laufe der Jahrhunderte verschieden von dem Künstler gesehen wird, wie sich die Formgebung wandelt von der Größe, der Schwere, dem Ernst, der Neigung zur Stilisierung in alter Zeit zu zunehmender Wirklichkeitsnähe. Hierbei wird ferner greifbar, daß die Ruinen Roms in der Technik der Zeichnung überwiegend von Niederländern festgehalten wurden, seltener von Italiener, Franzosen und Deutschen. In den druckgraphischen Darstellungen der frühen Zeit jedoch überwiegen die Italiener. Als zeichnender Künstler wird vermutungsweise Willem Schellinks genannt, nicht allein auf Grund stilistischer, sondern auch graphologischer Indizien. Sollte diese Vermutung zutreffen, so müßte eine frühe Italienreise des Künstlers, etwa 15 Jahre vor der von 1661- 1665 stattgefundenen Italienreise, vielleicht im Anschluß an Schellinks' Aufenthalt in Frankreich im Jahre 1646, angenommen werden.
