Faut-il, en l'absence de sources écrites, attendre le Xe siècle pour voir naître un village stable, avec un terroir ordonné et articulé ? ou plutôt anticiper, en étant sensible au " frémissement " carolingien ? Problème d'origine donc, mais aussi de lien avec le cadre des paroisses, avec le château ou la motte. Rien, ou presque, n'est définitivement acquis. Mieux vaut, par modestie, s'intéresser à des cas concrets, à des régions restreintes, bien éclairées par un faisceau de sources : les husun de la marche supérieure d'Al-Andalus, les casaux et les bastides de Gascogne, les villages du Nord ou du diocèse de Coutances. On y voit vivre les villageois, périr ou se développer leur milieu de vie, s'épanouir les convivialités ou les violences quotidiennes. On y voit surtout une diversité extrême, qui oblige à refuser toute synthèse globalisante, toute généralisation hâtive. D'autant que les historiens des textes ne peuvent se passer de l'archéologie et d'une iconographie bien comprise.
