Lynx, Agence Photogaphique de la Presse, Paris; Ingrid Bergman (1915–1982)
Photograph of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini top and their critic US Senator Edwin C. Johnson with actor Robert Taylor bottom during the controversy while in Rome. First edition of the photograph.
Roma: Oct. 13 1950 . Original silver print . 18.5 x 11cm. and text on separate sheet verso. .Robert Taylor was in Rome in 1950 to film the movie Quo Vadis based on the 1896 novel of the same title. During his time there his wife Barbara Stanwyck also joined him for several weeks. While Taylor was in Italy filming Quo Vadis gossip suggested he was involved with an extra on the film which led to the end of his marriage to Barbara Stanwyck in 1951.He was then photographed with US Senator Edwin C. Johnson a Democrat from Colorado who gained notoriety for a scathing speech delivered on the Senate floor targeting actress Ingrid Bergman. His attack stemmed from Bergman's extramarital affair with Italian film director Roberto Rossellini which resulted in the birth of a child before her divorce from her then-husband neurosurgeon Petter Lindström. Johnson's remarks were characterized by a strong moralistic tone. He dubbed Bergman "one of the most powerful women on Earth—a powerful influence for evil" according to History.com. He also criticized the "disgusting publicity campaign" surrounding their film "Stromboli" and even proposed federal licensing of actors and actresses with the threat of license revocation for scandalous personal behavior.Twenty-two years later in 1972 Senator Charles H. Percy of Illinois entered an apology into the Congressional Record for the attack on Bergman recognizing her as a "victim of bitter attack" and expressing regret for the "persecution" that caused her to leave the US at the height of her career. Roma: Oct. 13, 1950 unknown
