Paris 1800-1881 medievalist Conservateur at the Bibliothèque royale and later the first professor of medieval French literature at the Collège de France conceived the work not as a simple inventory but as a history of the manuscripts themselves. 1750. Paris Mondhare c.1750-1780. Original hand-coloured copper engraved vue d'optique. Plate Size: 38.7 cm x 23.2 cm. Sheet Size: 44.7 cm x 28. 6 cm Original print. In very good actually remarkable condition. Clean and crisp and radiant impression with only the faintest trace of browning. Some very minor traces of light staining to outer margin corner. A wonderful vue d'optique from 18th Century France. A beautiful original hand-coloured copperplate engraving that shows a view the Porte Saint-Antoine which was one of the gates of Paris. The Porte of Sainte Antoine was located and protected by the Bastille. This engraving captures a more peaceable atmosphere of Parisian life around that notorious landmark: finely-dressed people and family groups are shown out strolling along the tree-lined broad boulevard and off to the side along the more sheltered promenade. It is a busy scene: In the foreground under the shade of a tree a religious beggar seeks alms; nearby an unbusy street vendor is shown with a table of offered refreshments; a dog is shown possibly bounding after one of the wheels of the passing horse-drawn carriages in a time-honoured dangerous tradition; off to the side a crowd of spectators view ball games. Louis-Joseph Mondhare 1734 - 1799 was a Paris print engraver publisher and print dealer. Originally from Normandy Mondhare began publishing in Paris around 1760 and started to print prints bearing the address of the hotel de Saumur rue Saint-Jacques. From 1784 he established a partnership for 12 years with his son-in-law Pierre Jean. Wikipedia From about 1740 to about 1820 optical prints also called "vue optique" or "vue d'optique" prints were made to be viewed through a Zograscope or other devices of convex lens and mirror all of which produced optical illusion of depth. Intaglio optical prints have exaggerated converging lines and bright hand-colours which contribute to the illusion of depth. Typically the legends of optical prints have reversed words along the top edge as those would be seen though the scope but words on the bottom of the prints are normal. Wikipedia unknown

A beautiful original hand-coloured copperplate engraving that shows a view of The Paris Observatory and the College des Jesuits on the left bank of the Seine. In the foreground people are shown out strolling and conversing. Below the printed area is the title and the following address of the publisher in French: "A Paris chez J. Chereau rue St. Jacques au dessus de la Fontaine St. Severin aux 2 Colonnes No. 257." Jacques Chéreau 1688 - 1776 was a portrait engraver printmaker and publisher of optical prints in a neighbourhood of printmakers at the Rue Saint-Jacques variously given on prints as "au Grand St. Remy" "au Coq" or "au dessus de la Fontaine St. Severin" in Paris France. From about 1740 to about 1820 optical prints also called "vue optique" or "vue d'optique" prints were made to be viewed through a Zograscope or other devices of convex lens and mirror all of which produced optical illusion of depth. Intaglio optical prints have exaggerated converging lines and bright hand-colours which contribute to the illusion of depth. Engraved title-page engraved explanation of plates with pasted overslip adding a description of plate 6 and 6 engraved plates some staining to title-page and margins of plates. Contemporary marbled paper wrappers worn; cloth folding case. The plans and drawings illustrating the public festivities held in Paris to celebrate the TREATY OF AIX-LA-CHAPELLE on 12 February 1749. The treaty signed on 18 October 1748 was mainly a diplomatic agreement between Britain and France but it also marked the end of the War of Austrian Succession. Although the celebration called for fireworks at the Place de l'Hotel de Ville with numerous orchestras playing and buffets set up around the city the affair was rather gloomy due to French resentment over the terms of the treaty. Paris.: OTUA L'Office Technique pour l'Utilisation de l'Acier. 1935. Original leather-backed boards with cover design by Cassandre. Spine scuffed otherwise v.g. Large folio. Numerous illustrations throughout. This book is the record of the competition sponsored by OTUA for a new Exhibition Centre complete with its own airport. The judges included Auguste Perret and Tony Garnier. The grand prize-winner was the firm of Tournon & Chappey. Additional prizes went to Alex & Pierre Fournier Molinie Nicod & Boulanger Umbdenstock R. Expert and Charles & Daniel Letrosne. The exhibition centre was never constructed. History of the Civil War in America 4 volume set
Phildalephia: Joseph H. Coates & Co 1876. 1st Edition. Hardcover. VG. First edition 4 volumes printed 1876-1873 uniform blue cloth gilt device front. gilt tites spine. Ownership copy of Civil War surgeon Dr. James V. Kendall with his signature and address of Baldwinsville NY and the date each volume was purchased on the flyleaf of both volumes. Pasted into the second fly of the Volume I is a two-page ANS on chateau letterhead dated 12.8.85 from le Comte de Paris the author to Dr. Kendall in English in which le Comte acknowledges Kendall's laudatory letter and comments that he "has brought this work to about two thirds completion' anticipating "there will be ten in the French and five in the American edition' and regretting "unfortunately I can devote but little time to this great work". Beneath the pasted note Kendall has written a signed note in which he explains the nature of the correspondence from le Comte. Underneath that in pencil. Kendall notes that the work was never completed. Dr. Kendall 1818-1901 served in the 149th Regiment during the War between the States. Prince Philippe of Orléans Count of Paris Louis Philippe Albert 1838 -1894 was disputedly King of the French from 24 to 26 February 1848 as Louis Philippe II although he was never officially proclaimed as such. He was the grandson of Louis Philippe I King of the French. A historian journalist and outspoken democrat Philippe volunteered to serve as a Union Army officer in the American Civil War along with his younger brother Prince Robert Duke of Chartres. He was appointed as an assistant adjutant general with the rank of captain on 24 September 1861 and served under the name of Philippe d'Orléans the Count of Paris. He served on the staff of the commander of the Army of the Potomac Major General George B. McClellan for nearly a year. He distinguished himself during the unsuccessful Peninsular Campaign. He resigned from the Union Army along with his brother on 15 July 1862. Philippe's History of the Civil War in America is considered a standard reference work on the subject. Source: Wikipedia.
