Contemporary full raspberry sheep. Smooth spines decorated with three compartments and fillets. Titles and volume numbers gilt. Large floral panel stamped in blind on covers. Gilt fillet border. One small wormhole to upper joint at tail of volume 3. Light rubbing to headcaps and some joints. Some scattered foxing on paper that remains white. Handsome copy rare in full binding and in this condition. From 1799 to 1825 Colletta was both a witness and an actor in all the Neapolitan revolutions. He thus adhered to the new government as soon as the French founded a new republic in Naples in 1799. As soon as Ferdinand IV had reconquered the city he was thrown in prison. In 1806 the Bourbons were again thrown from the throne and Joseph Bonaparte settled in Naples. Colletta was then reinstated to his rank. In 1812 he was promoted to general and director of roads and bridges. He served under Murat's orders and fought the Austrians in 1815. During the Revolution of 1820 he was called by the king as advisor and again fought the Austrians in 1821. When autocracy was restored he was imprisoned for 3 months and escaped execution thanks to Austrian intervention. Colletta then knew exile and was permitted to reside in Florence where he wrote his History of Naples. This takes its place in European history. Chez Ladvocat unknown‎

A semi-historical narrative of civil rights the hero of Free at Last is the well-educated son of formerly enslaved parents who demands admission to the White House to meet President Chester Arthur and General Grant. The wife of a Presbyterian clergyman who directed the first racially-integrated school in Indiana during the Civil War Jane Collins gained notoriety as an anti-liquor crusader in the 1870s. She was arrested twice for leading “sit-ins†in saloons during which she and her white female followers knelt in prayer on bar-room floors – an early form of civil disobedience which foreshadowed the passive resistance of Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement a hundred years later. ‎HAMPTONVILLE NORTH CAROLINA NC. Very Good. 1860. On offer is a wonderful original archive of 40 handwritten letters and 8 items of ephemera including a poem receipt report card etc. some from many to Confederate Colonel Andrew C. Cowles of North Carolina and his family. Cowles b1833 - d.1881 was from Hamptonville North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1860-64 and a State Senator from 1865-66 and 1870-74. During the Civil War Cowles commanded the 18th Brigade of the 75th Regiment of North Carolina Militia at Hamptonville. He was given orders to purchase "rifles & double barrel shotguns" for the "detail militia" and to round up any deserters in his area. As a businessman Cowles ran a successful whiskey distillery. In addition to the nine 9 letters written by Andrew Cowles there are a number written to and from his wife Margaret "Maggie" Cowles nee Reynolds. Other names appearing in the letters include: Alice M. Tate Mary Martin Hugh Reynolds A. R. Simonton and James L. Mills. Most letters still have their original envelopes and stamps and date from the 1860's to the early 1900's with the majority dating from 1860 to 1880's. Various locales mentioned include: Statesville Asheville Charlotte Hamptonville Dellaplane Andrew's Mill Wilksboro Delphos Kansas and Philadelphia. The letters contain intimate personal content and social commentary including: loss of children college death illness butchering hogs Quaker church wagon problems and making wagon wheels poor roads the railroad repairing a still crime etc. Most of the items are in good condition but one letter by Andrew has split some others have small tears or breaks and a couple are slightly chewed in margin some toning minor staining darkness of ink some pencil varies. A former cowboy in Oklahoma Territory a rogue with a Robin Hood quirk called "King of the Oklahoma Outlaws" by Marshal Bill Tilghman - Bill Doolin served an apprenticeship in what was to be his chosen profession as a member of the Dalton gang. After the fiasco at Coffeyville in 1892 when all the Daltons but one were killed while trying to rob two banks simultaneously Doolin gathered together the remnants of previous bandit packs and made them his own. These wild characters went on to rob trains loot banks and otherwise thumb their noses at harrassed US marshals for the next four years until Doolin was killed by a heavy shotgun blast from ambush. Paper yellowing the title page somewhat browning Note: The second edition of the OCD 1970 is rather negative about the Greek epic poet of Egyptian origin Coluthus or Colluthus ca. 5th cent. A.D. His only surviving work the 'Rape of Helena' an epyllion of 392 hexameters is deemed uninspired and clearly influenced by Nonnus. Dibdin in his famous bibliography and much later H.J. Rose in his 'A Handbook of Greek literature' did not take the trouble of mentioning him at all. The 11th edition of the Encyclopeda Brittanica of 1910 volume VI finds the poem 'dull and tasteless devoid of imagination a poor imitation of Homer and it has little to recommend it except its harmonious versification based upon the technical rules of Nonnus'. The RE volume XI of 1922 col. 1099 s.v. 'Kolluthos' is harsh and finds his poetry 'Machwerk sprachliche und sachliche Stümperei'. Nowadays Coluthus' poetry is rehabilitated. Der 'Neue Pauly' volume 3 of 1999 is positive. Coluthus is called 'ein vollendeter Künstler' who imitates Homer. 'The Cambridge Companion to the Epic' Cambr. 2010 p. 28 § The 'Rape of Helena' tells the story of the Trojan prince Paris and Helena the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus from the wedding of Peleus and Thetis the judgement of Paris the elopement of Helena from Sparta till the arrival of Paris and Helena in Troy and as we all know 'Helenae raptus belli Trojani causa habendus'. The young Dutch scholar Johannes Daniël van Lennep born in Leeuwarden in 1724 chose to produce this edition of Coluthus to finish his studies under Valckenaer and Schrader at the University of Franeker. He did not edit Coluthus to rehabilitate him or because he liked his poetry it has nothing to recommend itself he says in the preface. His edition is proof of his competence as a scholar on the threshold of a scholarly career. Praefatio page V The professor of Greek at Leyden University Tiberius Hemsterhuis who Van Lennep much admired and under whom he wanted to continue his studies once called the work of Coluthus 'corruptissimum simul et mutilum'.
