First edition in English folio pp. 34 431 1 17; full contemporary paneled calf red morocco label; slight crack at the bottom of the lower joint else a very good sound copy. The Dedication is signed J. G. i.e. James Gatherer. With the early ownership inscription of "Ph: Fowke M.D.A.D. 1703" with a six-line inscription in Latin and Greek beneath it and a number of additional notes in his hand throughout in the margins and on the rear blank flyleaves. Phineas Fowke 1638-1710 was a Yorkshire physician who graduated from Cambridge in 1668. He practiced in London and was admitted as a fellow in the College of Physicians in 1680. This U.S. army physician served on the U.S. Army Board for Study of Tropical Diseases in Manila; malaria was a serious concern at the time ravaging U.S. troops during the Spanish-American War; Craig's advancements in the field include writings such as The Aestivo-Autumnal Malarial Fevers 1901 and The Malarial Fevers 1909. Partly-printed ADS 1p 6½" X 2 3/4" Washington DC 1922 July 22. Very good. Check drawn on The Riggs National Bank written out entirely in Craig's hand to "Cash" in the amount of $25 boldly signed. A giant in the world of ophthalmology this oculist and inventor is best known for pioneering the development of the industrial borescope and other optical devices in use today; in 1920 he founded Lexon Instrument Company. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Philadelphia PA 1957 January 12. Addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Bruno J. Gianetti. Very good. Cordial letter reading in part: "Dear Parents of a fortunate boy aged two named George: One of the finest things that can happen to a child is to have parents who are vitally interested in his future. It is a pleasure to meet such people. After the pleasant compliment you have paid me it is indeed fitting that I comply with your request for a photograph. One of the best photographs I have ever had taken was done at the request of my students of the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania and this I propose giving you rather than a latter more decrepid one taken this year." Bold full signature in black ink. Crampton also pencils "also his birthday" near his signature. Also present is the aforementioned photograph: IPS verso 8" X 10" Philadelphia PA 1958 February 12. Quite heavy stock half-length portrait of an older Crampton in three-piece suit hands in pockets gazing steely-eyed at the viewer. Nicely inscribed and signed by him on the verso in blue fountain pen: "George S. Crampton M.D. Born March 10 - 1874 / 2031 Locust Street Philadelphia 3 Pa. / My Best Wishes to / George Raymond Gianetti Born June 17 1954 / February 12 - '58." An exceptional pair. unknown

"The illustrations have been printed from six original boxwood engravings and one cherry woodcut on Amalfi Italian hand-made paper and on Moriki and Mending Tissue both hand-made in Japan." This is no. 635 of a limited edition of 975 copies from an edition of 1000; signed by Leonard Baskin. It was honored as one of the "Fifty Books of the Year 1957" by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Book is in Near Fine Condition: front wrapper lightly creased from upper corner along fore-edge; clean and crisp. Portfolio is in Good Condition: both front sections are starting to separate along the front joints from the tail; color is faded; lacking small part of spine label; front label is complete and bright. New York State. Good. 1917. Original Wraps. 1917 Adirondack vacation and hunting trip travel diary of Mrs A. L. Crane starting Sept. 27th from Afton and by way of a train in Utica making way to Beaver River. It appears our writer is the new Mrs. Crane as she refers to one of the large suitcases having a "Just Married" sign attached. Turns out she is a joker as since I listed this diary I have discovered her 1901 travel diary with mention of the same husband!! There seem to be a fair number of people in her party. She frequently mentions that the 'men' have all gone off and done this or done that. Mention of hunting and the trials of camping out. Our writer confides to the blank page of her aches and pains and her 'old bones' aching but she won't complain to the others 'as they don't neither will I'. Here are some other excepts: "Tuesday 9th went up to the RR tracks and got another b.b. pie. Myron got worried about me and came looking for me. Spent a most miserable day. I wish I had never come to the woods. I never will with the same company again. Things are too strenuous. I can be with E. day after day with never a ripple in our friendship but R. rubs me the wrong way." "Thurs 11th. R and I have divided the work and I hope there will be no more friction." "Fri 12th. Rain rain go away come again another day and it will come again another day all right. It commenced as we were getting breakfast - Myron finished baking pancakes under an umbrella." "Sun. 14th. M and I took a short cut and found Dan Popes camp and left our calling card
we found one of the seats made of a barrel that the used at Bearver River. I wrote on it in pencil 'A.L. Crane and Wife called here
and found no one at home." Mrs. Crane mentions the names of everyone they meet everyone met at other camps the weather and even what was eaten. She is quite detail oriented and shares her feelings very generously. This is a super diary and given that this is five weeks in the rough it is far more than a mere travel diary. Fourteen leaves 28 pages of writing about half in this 5 x 8 inch 'Student Note Book'. Sometimes she writes in pencil some times in pen. Also signed by the other contributors. While it was the intention of the club to have each contributor sign his piece Crane did not sign all 125 examples as he died at age 28 in the year 1900. In near fine condition rebacked charming illustration to the front free endpaper. Rare and desirable. Founded in 1893 the The Lanthorn Club consisted of young journalists and writers who would gather for lunch and a Saturday evening banquet the latter event requiring one member to read an original short story and then open himself to criticism. Crane's story is the first of seven pieces in the volume and it occupies more than half the space. 126 William Street hardcover

Stamford New York Port Jarvis. Good. 1869. This wee diary is covered with a brown silk fabric and has gilt edges. It measures 2" x 3.75" with a loop at the edge to hold a pencil. It is dated in pencil on the inside cover Sept 30 1869 but actually starts August 11th. The writer a young woman it appears rides the train for the first time to Port Jarvis starting in Stamford off to New York with mention of Buffalo and then back east to Boston. Rode the stage too and annotated all expenses. 24 small hand written pages with a fair bit of detail in this lovely pioneer travel journal. Two volumes bound in one quarto illustrated with 18 folding engraved plates age-toned the final plate a littlre frayed at the fore-edge and neatly repaired at the folds two main title pages six sub-title pages to the fascicles and six dedication pages all with engraved vignettes several engraved tail-pieces pp xii 508 8 a little age-toning throughout occasional spotting and foxing but otherwise sound smartly bound in a fairly modern half-calf slightly rubbed.As usual it is the second printing of the first volume and the first edition of the second. The first title page has the blind stamp of Isaac Bayley Balfour. As well as Regius Keeper of Edinburgh Botanic Garden Balfour had the distinction at various times of being Professor of Botany at Glasgow Oxford and Edinburgh. Crantz was a botanist but primarily a physician lecturing in obstetrics. As an extremely sharp-sighted and sensible observer - and in a scientific dispute with his contemporaries Jacquin and Linnaeus - he discovered and named for example the genus Camelina and many new species such as Pedicularis rostratocapitata Veronica orchidea Veronica dillenii. Potentilla crantzii and Noccaea crantzii = Thlaspi alpestre are named for him. The six fascicules are dedicated to different botanical societies or natural historians including Saverio Manetti Albrecht von Haller and the Dane Petrus Ascanius a pupil of Linnaeus. 1972. On offer is a fascinating pair 2 of manuscripts dated 1972 one an original of his story LONG WALK: RECOLLECTIONS BY NAVAJOS by Crawford R. 'CR' Buell who atypical of the establishment stories accounts for what happened during the "Indian Wars" not from the Army's or white man's point of view but from the view of the Navajo and Apache Indians. Of the two manuscripts one is Buell's original the other is the original edited copy from his editor Al Schroeder. Both are type written with handwritten corrections and notes. Buell's contains 23 pages and Schroeder's contains 25 pages. HISTORIC NOTES: History of the Long Walk: In the early 1860's the U.S. Army created a plan to move all Mescalero Apaches and Navajos from their land in response to fighting by the Navajo Indians and Americans of European descent who had begun settling in and around the Navajo homelands. This removal became known as The "Long Walk" because the Apache and Navajo Indians were forced at gun point from their homes in northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico and made to walk 300-plus-mile to a desolate internment camp along the Pecos River in eastern New Mexico called the Bosque Redondo Reservation Fort Sumner. The Army's plan began in January 1864 in the dead of winter and lasted for two months. According to historic accounts some 7500 to 8500 men women and children were forced to leave of which approx. 200 Navajos died of starvation and exposure to the elements. The Navajo were kept at the internment camp for 4 years having endured overcrowding and miserable conditions. In 1868 the Navajo signed the historic U.S.-Navajo Treaty which allowed the Navajo to be freed and to return to only a small portion of their original homeland in Arizona and New Mexico. The U.S. government promised basic services in exchange for peace and the Navajo began the long walk home on June 18 1868.
