The approximately 80 well filled pages of the 12 x 8 inch Record book are in multiple hands but the initial writing which has the biographical details feature the initials BL atop. USA AMERICA and CANADA BY RAIL. Good. 1923. On offer is a superb original manuscript and photographic relic of cross country train travel being the travel diary photo and postcard album of a "Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas Coast to Coast Tour on Rail" in 1923. Thomas was a noted Professor of Chemistry at Winthrop College in Rock Hill South Carolina. He also founded a travel tour company called Thomas Tours Inc. in 1920 and this large full book documents this guided trip from start to finish in superb style. The writer while unidentified in name appears in one of the photos Pike Peak Snowball photo using white ink on the black album paper in a lovely calligraphic hand describes the trip in wonderful detail: Banff Yellowstone Colorado Springs Salt lake City Portland Denver Kansas City etc. on the large 14 x 10 in pages. All told there are about 200 photos and postcards and most if not all with captions. There is an itinerary pasted in though one item removed beside it likely a brochure otherwise complete and one end screw is missing from the little pole that goes through the book otherwise G. HISTORICAL NOTES: From Winthrop College website: Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas brought his family to Rock Hill when he assumed the position of professor of Chemistry at Winthrop College in 1914. Boston 1775. On offer is a fascinating and intriguing manuscript relic of Christian faith being a handwritten c1770s manuscript copy of "A LETTER WRITTEN BY OUR BLESSED LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST AND FOUND UNDER A GREAT STONE SIXTY FIVE YEARS AFTER HIS CRUSIFIXION". This story and its variations of the teachings of Jesus appeared in several forms throughout Europe in earlier times and it would appear that someone had secured an English copy published in London and was perhaps preparing this as a copy for publication in Boston. However there is no record of it ever being published in America at this time but the rag paper is undoubtedly 18th Century and was copied as a keepsake. The letter states that keepers of a copy handwritten by the owner will protect homes and homeowners from pestilence plague and lighting. FREDERICK COUNTY 1849. On offer is a fascinating pre Civil War era handwritten statement given by a Mr. Myers likely John Myers of the Georgetown section of the District of Columbia. He was a tavern owner land owner and Mason from Georgetown. Economic and political conditions are discussed in the statement. The two page on one leaf 54 line 1849 testament begins: "Mr. Myers was here and gave his statement. Geo. Town seems to be more depressed than ever all accts from there state it to be extremely dull
" The unknown writer goes on to note from Myers oral statement that the Tavern now rents for $250

mentions the issue of South Carolina Calhoun and Nullification one of several volatile political issues of the mid 1830s Jacksonian period. The question of State Banks is also mentioned in this document. Geographical locals mentioned include Georgetown Harpers Ferry Point of Rocks a point where a bridge over the Potomac River connects Maryland and Virginia. and Williamsport. 1833 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT SHIP'S LOG OF A 155 DAY VOYAGE FROM THE PACIFIC COAST OF MEXICO TO NEW YORK CITY
SHIP MCLELLAN MAZATLAN TO NEW YORK. Good. 1833. On offer is a fascinating original 1833 logbook for the Ship McLellan later purchased in 1846 and refitted as a whaling ship from Mazatlan on the Pacific coast of Mexico to New York City. The volume is dated March 6 1833 to August 8th 1833. The 8 x 13 inch book produced specifically for the trade states: "Published and Sold by E. & G. W. Blunt 154 Water-street corner of Maiden-lane where is constantly for sale a complete assortment of the most approved Charts Nautical Books and Instruments. Nautical instruments Repaired. / June 1827". A lovely woodcut illustration of an American Clipper Ship under full sail graces the cover. While unknown the author the log has 74 pre-printed pages of charts to be filled in and all 74 pages have been used with a loose leaf tucked in at the end for August 4th through August 8th thus completing the entire journey from Mazatlan to New York. Typical of a log kept by the First Mate or Captain the log details all the technical data; daily charts contain information on positions weather currents longitude and latitude wind direction and force and the various sails used. Fairly extensive use is also made of the blank space provided to make longhand notations regarding the passage of the McLellan. The writer also uses this space to note both the daily and whole "distance run". The odd note regarding particular currents off the River Plata or meetings with other vessels and the gossip punctuate the journal. Here are some snippets: On March 6 1833 The Ship McLellan departs Mazatlan bound for New York. ".with the assistance of the Ship of War Rattlesnake crew got our anchor without difficulty. The three Marias Isles at meridian were to the northward of us from 15 to 25 miles." Distance run the first day: 100 miles. On April 7 1833: ".spoke whaling ship Amethist of Nantucket - 70 days out with 300 blls. of sperm oil - reports 80 ships in the neighborhood upon the same business but with indifferent success." On June 20 1833: ".unusual quantities of whales seen for these 2 days." and on July 4th the McLellan crosses the equator having been out for 121 days and run 11262 miles. On Thursday August 7 1833 ".at 6 took a pilot at 10 came to anchor outside the bar - at 8 a.m. wind N.W. weigh anchor and made sail - Friday at 1 p.m. having worked almost up to the narrows was taken in tow by a steam boat and came to anchor at Querantine at 4; Subjected to 48 hours Querantine". This ends the 155 day 14038 mile voyage of the McLellan." The covers are intact and are comprised of marbled paperboard. Overall VG. HISOTRICAL NOTES: one online source provides: Samuel W. Comstock started in the trading business in 1833 on the Ship McLellan with a cargo shipped by G. G . & S. Howland later Howland & Aspinwall consigned to S.W. Comstock supercargo on board "for Valparaiso and a market." American playwright whose many works include "The Fabulous Mrs. Fair" 1920. TLS 1p 7¼" X 10½" Santa Barbara CA 1920 June 25. Addressed to noted playwright Augustus Thomas 1857-1934. Very good. Bit of edgewear. In part: "I am very happy that you liked 'MRS. FAIR' and regret that I was not there to hear you say so. I am out here watching my nine year old who went rather to the bad physically becoming an expert on a horse and in the water and in consequence am very happy. I didn't think anything could add much to my feeling of content until I received the wire. It added not a little to the general joy." Thomas may have attended the premiere of "The Fabulous Mrs. Fair" which debuted about this time. Forbes' pleasure and relief at Thomas's congratulatory telegram can well be imagined for Thomas was a theatre heavyweight whose opinion could affect a new play's success. unknown

Widely considered one of the greatest scientists of all time and one of the founders of the fields of quantum chemistry and molecular biology Pauling is one of four individuals to have won more than one Nobel Prize the others being Marie Curie John Bardeen and Frederick Sanger. Of these he is the only person to have been awarded two unshared Nobel Prizes and one of two people to be awarded Nobel Prizes in different fields. The recipient Bob O'Connor was the mayor of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and a close personal friend of Ford. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Carl Smith. Just one week after the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas President Johnson appointed a commission chaired by Chief Justice Earl Warren to investigate the tragic events. Then Representative Ford's seat on the panel put the Michigan Congressman in the national spotlight. In this volume the first such book written by a member of the Commission Ford and co-author John Stiles Ford's personal assistant during the Commission's work reconstruct in a novel-like format the path that led Oswald to the Texas School Book Depository on November 22 1963 from his sojourn in the Soviet Union to his frustrated defection to Cuba. Gerald Rudolph Ford 1913–2006 and Walter Frederick Mondale 1928–2021 occupied opposite sides of one of the most consequential presidential elections of the postwar era — the 1976 campaign in which Ford seeking election to a full term following his unprecedented assumption of the presidency upon Richard Nixon's resignation faced Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter and his running mate the Minnesota Senator and former Vice President Mondale. Though Ford and Mondale were not direct antagonists in the campaign — that contest fell to their respective running mates Bob Dole and Mondale himself whose October 15 1976 debate at the Alley Theater in Houston Texas was the first formal debate ever held between vice presidential candidates and drew a television audience estimated at eighty-five million — the election nevertheless defined both men's subsequent political trajectories in lasting ways. The Democratic ticket of Carter and Mondale narrowly defeated the Republican ticket of Ford and Dole making it the first election since 1932 in which an incumbent president was defeated and ending Ford's presidency after less than two and a half years. Mondale went on to serve as Carter's Vice President from 1977 to 1981 before winning the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 only to lose to Ronald Reagan in one of the most lopsided electoral defeats in American history — carrying only his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia. Both men were ultimately regarded as exemplars of a tradition of decent institutionally minded public service that transcended partisan division and both were recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom — Ford posthumously and Mondale during the Obama administration — in recognition of careers defined by integrity and a genuine commitment to democratic governance. unknown

Ford in the center in blue felt tip and by Bob Dole to the bottom right beside his respect image in black felt tip. The bumper sticker is in near fine condition and the campaign pamphlet is in fine condition. Gerald Rudolph Ford 1913–2006 and Robert Joseph Dole 1923–2021 were two of the most consequential figures in the moderate-to-conservative wing of the twentieth-century Republican Party whose careers intersected most memorably in the 1976 presidential campaign — one of the most dramatic and closely contested elections in modern American history. Ford and Dole had been friends since their shared years in the House of Representatives where Dole had supported Ford in being named minority leader and Ford in turn had supported Dole in becoming chairman of the Republican National Committee a reciprocal loyalty that shaped Ford's decision to select Dole as his running mate following incumbent Vice President Nelson Rockefeller's withdrawal from consideration. Ford had narrowly defeated Ronald Reagan for the Republican nomination at a convention in which the outcome remained undecided until the actual balloting — the last American political convention of its kind — before facing Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter in a general election fought under the long shadow of Watergate and Ford's controversial pardon of Richard Nixon. Dole later recalled that the Republican ticket entered the general election facing a roughly thirty-point deficit in the polls with the combination of the failing economy and the Nixon pardon constituting as he put it "a pretty high hurdle to jump" though the race tightened considerably before Carter's narrow victory. Both men were decorated combat veterans — Ford a Naval officer in the Pacific and Dole a badly wounded infantry officer in Italy — and both embodied a tradition of bipartisan pragmatism and institutional respect that each in his long post-electoral career continued to represent with considerable distinction. unknown

1917 ORIGINAL SCRAPBOOK COMPILED WITH HANDWRITTEN NOTES BY A UNITED STATES MARINE SERVING AT GUANTANAMO DURING THE SUGAR INTERVENTION
GUANTANAMO CUBA. Good. 1917. On offer is a super original scrapbook and manuscript relic of World War I era service at Guantanamo Bay created compiled and annotated by 24 year old US Marine Private Foreman Leroy Roy Alpaugh 1893 - 1967. He was a member of the 7th Regiment 59th Company from New York City. In many ways a diary of his life in the service the scrapbook with many pieces of ephemera; photos postcards notes clippings etc. begins with his enlistment April 26 1917 at a recruiting station in Newark New Jersey to his deployment in Cuba and time spent there. He talks of initially guarding the pier at East 24th Street New York City and "we had it quite nice on the pier for a month or so until August 24th. Then I found much to my disgust that the 59th Co. of which I was a part was ordered to Philadelphia for transport to the tropics. We pulled out on board the Prairie at midnight Aug 20th and on the 27th came into the bay of Guantanamo disembarking on the 28th made camp on Deer Point." We note that historically his deployment to Cuba was most timely as historians and researchers understand that when conservative Cuban president Mario García Menocal was re-elected in November 1916 liberals began to question the circumstances behind his re-election. The outbreak of political unrest caused considerable dismay among American business interests on the island. Anxiety existed over security of American owned property especially the sugar plantations. Known as The Sugar Intervention the United States Marine Corps were stationed on the island of Cuba between 1917 and 1922. Marines intervened to guarantee sugar exports. During World War I the 7th Marine Regiment was formed in Philadelphia PA on August 14 1917 and immediately deployed to Cuba. The book was put together painstakingly completed with photographs meticulously labeled with locations and names of soldiers and detailed personal information about his time as a Marine in Cuba. Included are numerous WWI Marine Recruitment postcards; real photo postcards of soldiers and Cuba; military photos; a September 8 1917 menu from a Cuban restaurant; newspaper articles; greeting cards sent to him; his permit to drive through Santiago; Customs tags; Cuban lottery; Opera Handbill; May 1918 Hotel Imperial menu; Cuban landmarks and scenery; photos and real photo postcards of Quantico Virginia; Puerto Rico where sugar can was unloaded; an original June 11 1918 Spirit of 71 newsletter published by the Boys of the 71st; a July 17 1918 Old Dominion Steamship ticket; Officers' Training Camp Thanksgiving Day Menu Nov. 28 1918 at Quantico; and Dec. 16 1918 Second Officers Training Camp Graduation Dance pamphlet. There are 56 pages with items attached and 41 loose photographs. In addition there is a 6 1/2" x 9 1/4" photo of Roy Alpaugh standing outside a bayonet fence in San Juan 2 other portrait type photos of Roy a copy of his Marine Corps Discharge Papers his birth certificate and his obituary. Private Alpaugh did an exceptional job.
