This Austrian-born American baritone and occasional composer was popular in concert on the radio and television; he sang the occasional opera and made a few brief film appearances such as "Broadway Melody of 1938." Signed Program 8vo 5½" X 8½" 4pp n.p. n.y. Very good. Mild edgewear and faint mounting traces on middle third of rear wrapper; a number of small inked notes on front wrapper. Attractive program on buff stock for Gorin's appearance at the "Community Concert Association" listing a dozen assorted compositions by Rossini Chopin Tschaikowsky and even two compositions by Gorin himself. He signs large and bold in blue ink near the top. Also signing vertically across the front in bold pencil is his piano accompanist fellow Austrian-turned-American Adolf Baller 1909-94. Arguably the most famous Supreme Court Justice in American history lawyer and jurist Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020. Popularly dubbed “the Notorious R.B.G.†a play on the name of famed 90s rapper The Notorious B.I.G. Ginsburg was responsible for some of the most eventful legal decisions of the past half-century. When she was nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1993 to replace retiring justice Byron White Ginsburg became both the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the Court after Sandra Day O’Connor. Ginsburg was born and grew up in Brooklyn New York earned degrees at Cornell University and Columbia Law School and began her career as a professor at Rutgers Law School and Columbia Law School teaching civil procedure as one of the few women in her field. She spent much of her early legal career as an advocate for gender equality and women’s rights winning many arguments before the Supreme Court and in 1972 co-founded the Women’s Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union which participated in more than 300 gender discrimination cases by 1974. In 1980 President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit where she served until her appointment to the Supreme Court in 1993. During her tenure as associate justice of the Supreme Court Ginsburg received increasing attention for her fiery and passionate dissents that reflected liberal views of the law. She authored several important majority opinions related to gender discrimination voting rights and affirmative action in cases such as United States v. Virginia 1996 which struck down the Virginia Military Institute’s male-only admissions policy as violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment Olmstead v. L.C. 1999 in which the Court ruled that mental illness is a form of disability covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Friends of the Earth Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services Inc. 2000 in which the Court held that residents have standing to seek fines for an industrial polluter that affected their interests and that is able to continue doing so. In 2002 Ginsburg was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame she was named one of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women in 2009 and one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2015. Her powerful and fiery dissent in the 2013 Supreme Court case Shelby County v. Holder in which she argued against the majority’s decision to strike down key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 emphasizing the continued need for its protections against racial discrimination in voting earned her the nickname “The Notorious R.B.G.†– a moniker she came to embrace which has since become a celebration of her important legal career and legacy. Paper yellowing Note: The French scholar Dionysius Gothofredus or Denis Godefroy 1549-1622 is best known as the editor of the monumental 'Corpus iuris civilis' Lyon 1583 an edition with commentary of the complete collection of fundamental works in Roman jurisprudence Digest Institutions Codex Novellae issued on order of the emperor Justinian at the beginning of the sixth century. Gothofredus' edition made history. He did not only coin the title 'Corpus Juris Civilis' but it was issued more than 50 times with or without commentary and glossae. Gothofredus studied law at Louvain Cologne and Heidelberg and then returned to Paris his hometown to work as a solicitor. But being protestant he had however to leave France in 1579 escaping civil war and persecution and fled to Geneva. There he was professor of Roman law for the next ten years. In 1589 he was called back by king Henry IV but the next year he had to flee the country again. His house and library were plundered. In 1590 he took refuge in Basle. In 1591 he accepted a professorship of Roman law in Strassburg. From there he moved in 1604 to the university of Heidelberg where he became head of the faculty of law. Gothofredus also worked on classical authors such as Cicero and Seneca and the ancient grammarians and on ancient history. Gothofredus wrote the dedication and the preface of the first edition of the 'Antiquae Historiae ex XXVII authoribus contextae' during his stay in Basel in 1590 short after his escape from France. It was reissued in Lyon in 1591. An third reissue was published in 1604 in Strassburg. In the preface dated Basel 1590 Gothofredus explains that he offers here the 'studiosi' this collection of texts of Roman historians to help them to acquire knowledge of the history of Rome from the sources and not from a pond ten times removed from its source. 'Hoc enim opere primum antiquos authores selegi ut studiosi ex antiquis non ex decima lacuna cognitionem historiarum haurirent'. page 5 recto He presents also a list of 27 historians from whose work he drew from Berosus and Manetho to Paulus Diaconus and the Suda. He organizes their works chronologically in six books 1: on Italy before Rome 2: Rome and her kings 3: the consuls 4: Roman emperors from Julius Caesar till ca. 800 5: Constantinople till 1453 6: and on the medieval emperors of France and Germany. Book 4 on the Roman emperors is by far the longest 480 pages. For instance when he deals with Julius Caesar Gothofredus prints texts of Livy Florus Eutropius Aurelius Victor. The last 2 books after 800 are short and rather sketchy. Gothofredus doesnot use Tacitus Sallustius Suetonius Historia Augusta or Ammianus Marcellinus. The 1590 edition is rather common this edition of 1604 however seems rather rare. In KvK we found only a few copies Provenance: On the verso of the title a stamp: 'Hermann Funke'. 'Hermann Funke 1938-2015 war ein deutscher Klassischer Philologe. Hermann Funke studierte Klassische Philologie an der Universität zu Köln und wurde dort 1963 mit der Dissertation Die sogenannte tragische Schuld: Studie zur Rechtsidee in der griechischen Tragödie promoviert. Von 1964 bis 1968 arbeitete er am Franz Joseph Dölger-Institut der Universität Bonn anschließend als Assistent an der Universität Mannheim. Nach einem Forschungsaufenthalt am Center for Hellenic Studies der Harvard University 1971/1972 habilitierte er sich 1974 mit der Schrift Allegorie und Dichtererklärung: Studien zur poetischen Hermeneutik in der Antike unveröffentlicht. 1978 wurde er zum außerplanmäßigen Professor ernannt. Gough 1817-1886 was a well-known temperance orator and public speaker. After the death of his mother in 1835 Gough became an alcoholic. It cost him his family. In 1842 he attended a temperance meeting and signed a pledge to abstain from alcohol. Successful in the struggle to stop drinking Gough devoted his life to temperance reform. He traveled the world giving more than 5000 temperance lectures during his career. Later in his career he also spoke on other issues. This book contains his lectures on both temperance and on other subjects. Gough published six books during his lifetime. This collection was published posthumously but was planned or produced prior to his death. 8vo size brown clothbound hardcover with embossed borders front and back with bright gilt titles and illustrations on cover. The book paginates to 622 pages - but this is a sample book - and it includes only a selection of what would have been in the finished book. We estimate that it numbers about 200 pages. The pages aren't missing - they weren't included in the sample. It is profusely illustrated with black and white decorations and engravings throughout. After page 622 there is a testimonial section followed by the the order taking section a section of lined paper for the orders to be filled in. All of these sections are bound into this one volume. It looks like this book traveled the world. We can see orders for Boston Cleveland and also orders for Hungary. At some point in the book's history it looks like a young child filled in some of the what were then blank order pages in pencil. There is also a page penciled "I love you with all my heart." Perhaps written by the lad's mother. Interspersed with the child's play are the actual order pages domestic and foreign. There are two or three pages in this section that appear to have been used for order some pages in this section were written on by the child and other pages are blank. This unique volume has some external war and tear. Covers have some wear and bright gilt titles on front cover are a little rubbed. Bumped and worn corners; edgewear. Fraying to top and bottom of spine and small chip on side. External tear to spine allows you to see the newsprint using in the manufacturing process. Salesman's sample is penciled on the flyleaf along with price. Name written on inside cover. Half inch tear on bottom of title page and quarter inch tear on bottom of opposite pace. Frontispiece has left ghostly sepia transfer on preceding pages. Inside back cover had something pasted in now gone that has left stain on printed back endpaper and preceding pages. Several pages in the back of the book have some soil to page margins including the first page in the testimonial section and there may be spots of soil on other pages. Laidlaw Environmental Services Inc. 2000 in which the Court held that residents have standing to seek fines for an industrial polluter that affected their interests and that is able to continue doing so. Gould became acquainted with Ginsburg upon visiting at Harvard in 1971 and '72 after which Gould has said: "We kept in touch over the years when she was on the DC Circuit and the High Court. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants.This edition the so-called Imperial edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened Moyen-Egypte and Grand-Egypte. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The Imperial edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the Egypte ancienne et moderne watermark known as the Royal Edition was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris.The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte.Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants.This edition the so-called Imperial edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened Moyen-Egypte and Grand-Egypte. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The Imperial edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the Egypte ancienne et moderne watermark known as the Royal Edition was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris.The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte.Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan.
