General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Annotated Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. U.S. Grant.
New York: Charles L. Webster & Company 1885-86. Exceedingly rare first edition of the autobiography of Ulysses S. Grant the 18th President of the United States which focusing mainly on his military career during the Mexican War and the Civil War entirely singular owned and annotated by Grant's close friend and most esteemed general: William Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo 2 volumes bound in the original full deluxe tree calf with gilt titles and elegant tooling to the spine gilt ruled borders to the front and rear panels gilt inner dentelles all edges gilt engraved portrait frontispieces illustrated with numerous facsimile letters 2 folding maps and wood engravings. William Tecumseh Sherman evidently read thes volumes in great detail making marginal notes on at least 18 pages in Vol. I several of them signed with his initials. On the last page of Vol. I Sherman wrote: "Read at St. Louis Mo. Dec 5 6 1885. This account of the Civil War is wonderfully accurate and him. W.T.S." Many of the notes are small corrections and additions by Sherman. On a passage regarding the Yazoo Pass Expedition on page 435 of Vol. I Sherman pointedly writes: "This conforms literally to my memoirs on the point most contested by Grant's pretended friends. W.T.S." He provides further thoughts regarding political interference on the next page: "If Grant had gone ahead living off the country we would have been inside of Vicksburg by Christmas 1862 the distance from Grenada to Vicksburg is little more than the circuit we afterward made from Bruinsberg via Jackson to Vicksburg --- This was my understanding when we parted at Oxford and the intervening country was better supplied with hay hominy. W.T.S." On p. 440-441 Grant wrote about the need to assign politically-connected John McClernand as Corps Commander: "I would have been glad to put Sherman in command to give him an opportunity to accomplish what he had failed in the December before; but there seemed no other way out of he difficulty for he was junior to McClernand. Sherman's failure needs no apology." In the margins Sherman's distinctive hand writes passionately: "because it was no failure at all." There is only one marginal annotation in Vol. II; however an autograph note is laid in at p. 123 supplying Sherman's recollection of Grant's first meeting with Lincoln which corroborates Grant's account. While Sherman was not present at the meeting between Grant and Lincoln he almost certainly heard about what transpired from Grant himself. The note reads in full: "Grants Memoirs Vol 2 Page 123 A good story is very correct. 'Si non vero ben trovalo.' Even if it is not true it is well conceived. This is the conversation between Genl. Grant President Lincoln and Secretary of War Stanton at the time he was addressed to command all the Armies of the U.S. Grant said in his usual quiet manner 'Mr. Lincoln I am told that several well planned campaigns in Virginia have been marred by interference from Washington viz from the Secretary of War or the President now if I am to command I must insist that no military order be issued to any detachment or part of the Army except through me' Mr. Lincoln in his inimitable way turning to Stanton said 'Stanton you and I have been running this machine for two years and have not made a brilliant success. I guess we had better trust this little man' Grant and then then and there the promise was made. And it is to the credit of Mr. Lincoln to say that he kept his word literally never interfering or making any order even when Washington was in real peril from Early's Army in 1865." Grant's insistence that there would be no political interference was likely particularly important to General Sherman who famously hated politicians. In good condition with detaching of the front boards and spines of each volume detaching of the rear board and separation of the folding facsimile letter at p. 312-313. Copies bound in highly polished gilt tree calf are extremely rare with only three other copies known. The first prospectus of Grant's Memoirs listed only 4 bindings: fine cloth full sheep fine half morocco and full Turkey morocco. The only other copy of Grant's Memoirs bound in tree calf was sold at auction - a copy presented to Mark Twain by Julia Grant and inscribed by both. Only two other known copies are located in private collections. To date no copies bound in the tree calf have been traced to institutional collections. As Grant died before publication was complete the only copy that he saw before his death was a prospectus bound in cloth; the extant tree calf copies suggest that the binding was perhaps reserved exclusively for presentations made by Julia Grant. Even the copies presented by publisher Mark Twain to his friends and colleagues were bound in one of the other available bindings. Though this copy bears no presentation inscription by Julia Grant Mark Twain or anyone else it is plausible that one of these figures would have sent the copy directly to General Sherman. After his second presidential term and world tour President Grant was stripped of nearly all of his life's earnings by conman Ferdinand Ward. Grant had forfeited his and his widow's military pension when he resigned as general to assume the presidency and his recent throat cancer diagnosis brought him deep concern about how his wife and family would manage financially after his death. In this moment of crisis Sherman rushed to Grant's aid and assisted him in restructuring his debt ensuring that Grant was able to keep his most prized possesions. Most importantly Sherman also encouraged Grant to do what he should have done years ago - write his memoirs. By June 1884 Grant had begun publishing articles on his major engagements of the Civil War for 'Century Magazine' which paid him $500 for each submission. The articles were received with great enthusiasm and Grant met with the magazine's representatives in early September to arrange for the publication of his memoirs. However when Samuel Clemens popularly Mark Twain learned of the potential arrangement with 'Century Magazine' he convinced Grant to sign with his own subscription publishing company which was able to offer Grant 70% of the net profit made from the sale of his memoirs. This rate was exorbitantly higher than what 'Century Magazine' had proposed. Grant began writing his memoirs in earnest racing against the illness to finish and ensure his family's financial stability. During this time Grant welcomed Sherman's repeated visits. On December 24 1884 Sherman wrote to his wife Ellen: "Grant says my visits have done him more good than all the doctors" Flood p.395. Grant with the moral support of Sherman lived to finish the memoir dying five days after its completion. Widely considered the finest military narrative ever published the memoirs were a national bestseller and Grant's widow Julia would eventually receive nearly $450000 about ~$14000000 today in royalties from their sale. The man referenced here Charles Purdue was a seaman aboard the Robert Edwards in the spring of 1871 who was accused of inexplicably setting fire to the ship causing all on board to abandon the vessel. Although he was charged and convicted of arson no lives were lost and Purdue claimed that his confession of the crime had been extorted. In very good condition. Ulysses S. Mounted and framed with a ticket to Grant's Inaugural Procession two Mexican feather art pieces one depicting the Mexican eagle and flag and another with two American flags with the gold embossed words: Welcome to Grant Mexico 1880 and an engraved portrait of Grant. In near fine condition. Mounted and framed. The letter measures 8.25 inches by 11 inches. The entire piece measures 21 inches by 17 inches. After leaving the presidency Ulysses S. Grant sought to translate his public stature into commercial authority most notably through his role in founding and leading the Mexican Southern Railroad Company. Developed in collaboration with the Mexican diplomat and statesman Matías Romero the venture aimed to build a strategic passenger-and-freight corridor linking Puebla and Oaxaca strengthening regional commerce while attracting U.S. capital to Mexican infrastructure. The company was incorporated in New York on March 1 1881 with Grant serving as its president and functioning as the project’s principal public representative to investors and the press. Despite these high-profile beginnings the enterprise was weakened by slow surveying construction delays and persistent financial instability entering bankruptcy by the mid-1880s. Under subsequent ownership construction resumed and the line was completed in 1892 operating profitably for a time before its eventual nationalization in 1936 a trajectory that underscores both the ambition and volatility of transnational railroad development in the late nineteenth century. unknown

U.S. Grant Washington November 25 1876." Rafael Zaldivar 1834-1903 was President of El Salvador from 1876 to 1885 and later served as a diplomat. Trained as a physician in Europe he later taught philosophy and hygiene at the University of Guatemala before entering politics. His administration enacted liberal reforms that ended collectively owned lands and laid the groundwork for large-scale coffee cultivation a key phase of El Salvador's "Coffee Revolution." Sept. 2nd 1876 Dear Judge While in Utica Judge Hunt spoke to me of the importance of appointing a member to Judge Woodruff at as early as a day as practicable on account of the great amount of business before the court. I do not know of any lawyer in the circuit to whom to tender the position when it should be Senator Edmunds and he I should dislike to see leave the Senate. But you are well acquainted with the Bar in that circuit and its wants and can no doubt suggest the right man for the place. If you will send me a commission therefore to St. Louis so as to reach me there between the 24th and 28th either filled up of the name blank with suggestions as to the best man I will sign and return it. Very truly your humble servant U.S. Grant." Grant appointed Pierrepont Attorney General of the United States on April 26 1875. In the twenty years Shrady spent executing its sculpture program he studied biology at the American Museum of Natural History and dissected horses to gain a better understanding of animal anatomy. The memorial was dedicated on April 27 1922 two weeks after Shrady's death. The Grant Memorial is described as "one of the most important sculptures in Washington" by James M. Baltimore Maryland MD 1841. On offer is an original one 1 page letter approx. 7-7/8" x 9-3/4" dated at Baltimore Md. Dec. 7 1841 from G.S. Oldfield to T.J. Tobias at New York City. Folded letter has blue "BALTIMORE/MD." cds postmark and manuscript "18-3/4" rate. The writer of this letter Granville S. Oldfield was a Commission Merchant in Baltimore and was for several years the Consul of the Kingdom of Hawaii for Md. & Delaware. He was a patron of the arts and his great collection of paintings of English Masters was auctioned in NYC by court order in 1862. Tobias was an eminent Jewish merchant in Baltimore and New York. In his later years he was primarily in the wine and liquor trade. He was born in England and was a nephew of Morris Tobias the famous watch & chronometer maker of London who was most active in the 1790's. The letter has great content about the wine business in which Oldfield writes that sales of Sweet Malaga are brisk and he urges Tobias to buy up as much as he can from the ships arriving at New York. He also writes of the market for Port and prospects for the Spring. "I notice Sweet Malaga is selling at 30c six months credit in New York. If you can purchase one or two hundred casks at that price and credit of a good brand I recommend your so doing from alongside the vessel of importation. You can easily obtain freight at 15c. Be assured this article will soon advance in price with you. It is selling here at 35c and you will not obtain it in a week from this at 30c. Peter Harmony Francis and others have.late supplies therefore look out at once. I will send you the Malensey as it will not sell here. The Port is moving slowly but surely. We shall have a fair trade all the Winter and our Spring sales will open early and bravely. I wish I could have heard friend Cuthbertson make that speech at the great dinner the other day." VG. . On offer is a charming original 1930s manuscript log and notebook comprising 42 pages of logs notes and study materials and drawings of flags anchors ships etc. all relating to sailing ships and the sea and another section of roughly equal length with notes on geology rock types and drawings of formations reflecting a parallel perhaps later interest in natural history. The author identifies himself as Coxswain Granville Wilson of the Sea Scout Patrol Harrison. Eleven Scouts are noted by list. Collectors and historians will find a very unique book of the exemplfying the beloved Sea Scout movement which began in the early 20th Century in England and then finding huge popularity in America in the early 20s and on. This journal is a superb relic of these 11 young people who were but one group out of 8043 who trained in 1930 records show. There is also a photo dated on the back 1937 of a sailor and more than likely a former Sea Scout. The Sea Scout were particularly noted by Admiral Nimitz for their service in WWII. Decorated woodcut initials. The appendices include a biography of Gratian; the Decretum abbreviatum in oratione soluta by Johannes Andreae as well as the text of the plates: Declaratio arboris consanguinitatis printed on the verso of the plates and on six leaves. Colophon: ""excussum in officina Johannis Prenel. Anno salutis humane millesimo quinqentesimo vigesimo sexto. Mensis Maij."" Mid-19th-century half-shagreen binding with corners. Spine with raised bands in compartments. Gilt title and date. A brown waterstain in the right margin of the last ten leaves affecting only a few millimetres; a brown spot in the upper margin of the final twenty leaves. Browning also along the right margin of the title page extending only a few millimetres; a few leaves show a brown spot in the upper margin. Generally quite fresh though some leaves are browned notably in the tables; some leaves also trimmed in the lower margin. A tear across half the page on leaf focccxcix. Numerous pagination errors. The Golden Decree of Gratian or The Concord of Discordant Canons concordantia discordantium canonum composed of a florilegium of legal texts is one of the most important canonical works of the Middle Ages; it brings together more than 3800 texts: the so-called apostolic canons patristic writings papal decretals conciliar decrees Roman and Frankish laws etc. Its composition is dated to around 1140. The epithet ""golden"" appears unique to this edition for it is found in no other and the work was not otherwise known by that title but simply as Gratians Decretum. The title Concordantia seems to have been chosen by Gratian himself referring to the method and the legal project: the canons are grouped thematically to which the author adds a commentary intended to reconcile differences the Dictum; he sometimes adopts the opposite method formulating questions on the same theme the answers being provided in the form of citations. By weaving his own commentary into the legal texts grouping the canons thematically with an introductory text and relativizing their authority Gratian introduced major innovations into juridical literature. The internal coherence of the work contributed to its almost immediate adoption by numerous law schools. The work is composed of three distinct parts: the Distinctiones which address divine natural and customary law; the Causae which cover the major sections of canon law namely the appointment and recusal of bishops revenues heresy excommunication; and finally the last and by far the briefest part the De consecratione dealing with the consecration of churches the mass baptism and so forth.
