A title vignette with the arms of the Duke of Guise Henri II de Lorraine 1614-1664. These memoirs were published by the Duke's secretary sieur de Saint-Yon who allegedly asked Philippe Goibeau to write them. It should be noted however that Augustin Calmet Bibl. lorraine 594 does not doubt that these memoirs are from the duke's hand. Fine printing in large characters. Contemporary full brown speckled and glazed sheep binding. Richly decorated spine with raised bands. Brown morocco title label. Narrow split to joints at head. Last compartment narrowly split on upper joint. Missing one third of the title label. 3 corners slightly bumped. Pale gilt crayon letters have been added where those of the title label are missing namely ME before MOIRE and the G of Guise. Slight trace of pale dampstain from p.122 in upper margin on several leaves then appearing erratically; this dampstain becomes yellow from p. 744 to the end and is more pronounced. 18th-century armorial bookplate: S.R.I. comes de Wiser eer Dinand Andreas. ""These Memoirs deal with the Naples expedition where the Duke of Guise tries to have the claims of the house of Lorraine on the kingdom of the Two Sicilies accepted and where his attempt ends with captivity among the Spanish"" Sources de l'histoire de France 785. Although he acknowledges the full atrocity of the crime perpetrated by sieur Cardinet against the person of the son of one of the most important magistrates of the city of Bourges Henri II undertakes to intervene in favor of the assassin: "". l'action qui sest passee a Bourges est très méchante estant un assassinat très inhumain fait en plein jour contre le fils dun des principaus magistras de la ville. Collection of three ordinances concerning election officers who were responsible for collecting taxes under Henri III. France was indeed divided into elections ancestors of our departments and the three ordinances which reintroduce then abolish and reintroduce again the elected officials and presidents seem to show that tax collection and administration were not yet straightforward in the troubled period of the late Renaissance. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with full margins artist's signature and date in the plate publisher's blind stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin with the numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on the verso. Lithograph inspired by a poem by Van Lerberghe entitled ""Les entrevisions"". Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential printing of very high luxury: 50 copies on Japan paper with full margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of beautiful format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but indeed to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors for artistic posters grew at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and pasted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and devoted to preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered luxury edition stamp on the verso pale marginal foxing. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Dante's Divine Comedy. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe Moderne consists of unpublished chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were specially created by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Epoque. Each delivery of four prints was issued in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential very deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but rather to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft at once is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and posted on the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and devoted to conservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. Fine. 20 Février 1926 21.50 x 13.50 cm un feuillet recto verso Autograph letter dated and signed by Henri Martin post-impressionist painter who was a pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens 20 lines written in black ink. Central fold inherent to postal dispatch. At the end of the missive some calculation notes in black ink probably traced by the recipient. Henri Martin is thwarted in his triptych project that a municipality wishes to commission from him: ""De Monzie came to the inauguration of my exhibition and we spoke about the town hall project. He asked me to leave him the door that was to form the central panel of my triptych. I told him that if it had to be removed I would give up this work."" which is why he seeks advice from his correspondent: ""But then in the upper rooms could we not find the desired location. It would moreover be more prudent from the point of view of conservation of my paintings because after all in the lower vestibule - one must think of the dust from the road. Would you look and tell me if you see a place."" ""This probably concerns the project of the ""war memorial"" for the town hall of Cahors. This project supported by the influential politician Anatole de Monzie took more than 10 years to come to fruition. The painting is today preserved at the museum of Cahors."" A Parisian edition was also published in 1705. The English first edition dates from 1703 in Oxford. Bound in full blonde sheep root-marbled later binding c. 1790. Smooth spine decorated with 5 tools and repeated roulette. Headcap torn off. Two corners bumped. Chaplain to the English Levant Company in Aleppo Maundrell accomplished a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1696 accompanied by 14 coreligionists. The narrative follows the form of a daily journal. The travelers passed through Lebanon and Syria and Maundrell provides the first description of Baalbek known to the English and gives other descriptions of famous sites: Sidon Palmyra Tyre.
