One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe edition on verso light trace of the stamp from the previous engraving on recto; engraving preceded by a tissue guard captioned with the artist's name title and text by the artist; blank tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other periodicals such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was published in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a very confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print in a handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a work of art in its own right. Its quality of ink absorption and its affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very fine lithographs. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and pasted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the illustrated deluxe book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy in Art Nouveau style. Fielding had previously written Joseph Andrews a sort of satire of the fashionable sentimental novel Richardson's Pamela and The History of Jonathan Wild already two masterstrokes and with Tom Jones he created a multiple profound work though always in the same vein as Joseph Andrews; its influence would be great in France and enduring in England reaching Thomas Hardy and George Eliot. ‎Ontario Quebec Canada Montreal. Good with no dust jacket. 1883. Non-Book. On offer is an inked signature on a heavy gilded-edge card of Henry George Vennor 1841-1884 a noted Canadian geologist and ornithologist who became well known for his accurate forecasting of the weather. It bears the date “4/30/83” and “Montreal”. Vennor born in Montreal to a merchant father attended McGill College studying natural sciences and civil engineering. From 1865 he was on the staff of the Geological Survey of Canada focusing on mining prospects in southern Ontario and Quebec assisting in discovering gold apatite and phosphate deposits. He resigned in 1881 citing a conflict with his own interests in phosphate mining. In the 1870s Vennor began studying weather patterns correctly predicting in Montreal newspapers an unseasonably mild and muddy Christmas in 1875. In 1877 he published the first of his Vennor Almanacs predicting the weather. It sold well and became an annual publication expanding to an American edition in 1881. At the end of that year Vennor was visited in Montreal by Mark Twain who said of him in an after-dinner speech at the Windsor Hotel "Canada has a reputation for magnificent winter weather and has a prophet who is bound to deliver it." As an ornithologist his book Our Birds of Prey was published in 1876. He died in Montreal on June 8 1884.This item is an ink signature on thick-card with minor age toning 3-¾ x 1-¾ inches mounted on an age-toned 5 x 3 inch card with slightly worn corners. This copy has a half red morocco chemise with flaps spine soiled double gilt fillet to covers title giltstamped on upper cover cloth and paper flaps heavily damaged lower flap lacking headpieces rubbed with lacks to head and foot of joints corners rubbed ties lacking. Portraits of political and intellectual figures from the 19th century. The majority of the illustrations are signed and dated in the plate. These reproductions were mostly done after works in private collections. A noted specialist on Ingres Henry Lapauze 1867-1925 notes in his introduction «Thus these fantastic portraits most of which are jealously guarded as family heirlooms or are the pride of private collections become a national treasure that all may look upon.» Lapauze's main goal was to allow a broader public to become better acquainted with Ingres' work at a time when culture was elevated into the ranks of the French national heritage by the Third Republic. It was thus that Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' 1780-1867 work once more awoke the interest of art historians and the general public at the turn of the 20th century. These one hundred portraits make up a visual gallery of Ingres' circle. Lapauze thinks it is of little importance whether or not readers are familiar with the people portrayed since the painter's genius is enough to get across the «master's glorious talent» and to ensure «the delight of people of good taste». With an autograph envelope addressed by Henry Miller to Béatrice Commengé and an autograph letter signed by Anaïs Nin to Béatrice Commengé. In 1976 Béatrice Commengé then a young literature student began writing a thesis on Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller. From her home village in the Périgord region she wrote to both. Nin who was very unwell apologized for not being able to help her. Miller though let himself be seduced at the outset by the idea of exchanging letters with an inhabitant of Domme the village whose beauty he had lauded in The Colossus of Maroussi. Very quickly impressed with the student's style and determination he entered into a correspondence with her that would last until – two years before his death – Miller's eyesight broke down completely preventing him from reading and writing. At this time Miller then 85 was living almost as a recluse in Pacific Palisades in California rejecting the American way of life and its illusions and dreading all-too frequent offers and invitations. But the old writer was very quickly charmed by Commengé's outlook on his work: «You are a gem! One of the very few ‘'fanas'' to understand me. Merci! Merci mille fois!» he writes in his second letter. A true epistolary friendship then develops between the ageing writer and his young muse: «I think of you as some sort of terrestrial angel» and «what a delight to get a letter from you»; «Keep writing me please!» In passionate letters that are written and re-written with their English mixed with French words underlined copious brackets and exclamation points and post-scriptums squeezed into the margins Miller examines his work and his memories. He refuses a purely academic correspondence «To be honest with you I don't think either A.N. or I who are naturally very truthful persons really succeeded with truth as it is conventionally thought of. We are both confirmed ‘fabulators'.» Miller recommends the young woman the books he's been reading recently and his old friends: «Lawrence Durrel is the friend to talk to about me . he knows me inside out»; «he is wonderful when you get to know him. éblouissant même»; «that great master of the French language – Joseph Delteil»; «Delteil is almost a saint. But a lively one»; «Alfred Perlès is the clown the buffoon who made me laugh every day». He goes on to congratulate her on abandoning her didactic project in favor of an «imaginary book about him» and launches on a much more intimate correspondence. He confesses his shock as well: «Did you read about the French prostitutes protesting and demonstrating in Paris against my receiving the legion of honor They say I did not treat them well in my books. And I thought I had!!». He also shares his literary tastes: «I prefer the Welsh. They are the last of the poets». He also warns the future translator of Anaïs Nin against his former mistress' duality: «She is or was a complete enigma absolutely dual. . Actually I suppose there is always this dichotomy between the person and the writer» and confides to her her secrets: «she is slowly dying of cancer she refuses to admit it. This is entre nous!». He also discusses his latest loves: «I am in love with a very beautiful Chinese actress . I seem to go from one to another never totally defeated never wholly satisfied.
