Toshiro Katano Nagoya 1878 15.50 x 22.70 cm cousu Rare edition in second printing which can be translated under the title Hokusai Sketches volume 9. 15 volumes were indeed published covering Hokusai's work. The first was published in 1814 and the last posthumously in 1878. The final volume is considered apocryphal by some art historians. The volume contains approximately 40 subjects most on double pages in black grey and flesh tones. It is essential to add that one cannot determine with certainty whether this is the first printing or a later printing because on this subject there was no difference for the Japanese and the publisher reprinted volumes as needed the notion of first printing not being relevant with regard to Japanese books. We know however that the publisher made a second printing of this book between 1828 and 1878. The later printings do not have the same publisher's name and often possess a date which is not the case with the earlier printings. Accordion-fold volume bound by stitching. Grey diamond-patterned cover with title label and writing in red on white background. Very good copy quite fresh. The Hokusai manga treat varied subjects scenes from daily life but also warrior scenes also scenes of typically Japanese legends animals and flowers and landscapes animated or not notably Mount Fuji. It is generally considered that after a period of intense production Hokusai very carefully selected his sketches and even redrew a certain number of them arranging them according to the order we know today. However Michener maintains that the layout of the different sketches on a given plate was actually decided by the engravers and publishers and not by Hokusai himself. We should recall that the technique of Japanese printmaking is very close to the original drawing since the ink drawing was applied to a piece of wood that the engraver carved precisely following the lines of the drawing which was itself destroyed by this operation. Eirakuya Toshiro Edo Tokyo Tokyo 1849 15.60 x 22.60 cm cousu Rare first edition translated as ""Croquis de Hokusaï"" volume 14. 15 volumes were actually published covering Hokusaï's work. The first was published in 1815 and the last posthumously in 1878. The final volume is considered apocryphal by some art historians. The 30 double-leaf volume contains around 39 engravings 12 of which are double-page spreads including many animated landscapes real and mythological animals. There are 3 colors: beige gray and black. It is difficult to determine wether it is a first or a later print run as this detail made no difference in Japanese book collecting. The publisher reprinted volumes as needed. We do know however that the publisher produced several issues of this book between 1849 and 1878. Volume in acordeon bound by a seam. Bronze-green cover with title label. Rubbing to front cover. Interior very fresh and clean. Printed on mulberry paper. A brown stain on the first 2 leaves. A good copy. Hokusai manga deal with a variety of subjects from scenes of everyday life to war scenes as well as typical Japanese legends animals and flowers. Accordion-fold volume bound with stitching black cover some creasing to board edges rubbing and small lacks. The red printed label is lacking to this copy. The first and last pages detached from boards. Creases small lacks and discolouration to boards. Minor soiling. Hokusai's mangas treat various subjects the artist depicts Japan of the period from everyday scenes to amusing moments combining a great variety of subjects: the present volume focuses on temple architecture their ceremonies contemplative scholars ladies from the Heian period 784-1192 nobles samurai lords as well as divinities and onis demons. One will also note a magnificent view of Mount Fuji and an impressive storm scene at sea. These different subjects were intended to serve as learning manuals for use by young artists they would also serve as model collections for artisans and would even become a sort of illustrated encyclopedia of life and daily living in Japan during the Edo period 1603-1868. The Confederate victory allowed commanding Maj. Gen. Sterling Price to lead the Missouri State Guard north in a campaign culminating at the siege of Lexington Missouri and effectively gave the Confederates control of southwestern Missouri. Denzil Holles was one of five members of the House of Commons whom King Charles I of England unsuccessfully attempted to arrest in 1642 and in this speech he presents the House of Commons' impeachment of the nine Lords who had refused to rejoin Parliament having joined the king's forces in what became the First English Civil War. In Very Good- Condition: lower edge of second signature shaved with partial loss of some letters; title page and last blank page lightly soiled; pages are otherwise clean and bright. The binding is quite rubbed and worn. The front board has damping. Rear board has smudges and scuffs. Some pages are damped have smudging. Text is foxed. No copyright date but the book was published in 1903. An early owner's inscription on front flyleaf reads "To Thomas from Katherine Kelby. / Feb. 19 1905." We have found a listing of this book for sale in the December 1903 advertisements of "The Theosophical Forum." The advertisement in that journal of this book states "The dawn of a new day in the intellectual and spiritual development of the child. These stories which embody the higher laws of being are so simply told that the youthful mind can easily comprehend them. Between each story is an exquisite 'Moonlight Lullaby.'" The "Moonlight Lullaby" is a poem between each little story. Not an illustrated work. Laura C. Holloway-Langford 1848-1930 was born in Tennessee and after a brief marriage in the 1860s turned to writing to support herself. She is best known for her 1870 book "Ladies of the White House." She became a journalist and editor and was friends with Susan B. Anthony. She became active in progressive women's causes the temperance movement and theosophy. She was admitted to the Society in 1883. This scarce book of Fairy tales is a collection of tales inspired by theosophy. <br/> <br/> Home Publishing Company hardcover

No date given; circa 1910 based on publisher's address as listed in catalogue. 8vo size pictorial clothbound hardcover with color inlaid illustration on cover and color illustrated dust jacket; 314 toned pages followed by six page publishers catalogue. The inlaid picture on cover and picture on dust jacket are different reflecting the title characters. The illustration on the jacket is signed and we read it as either 'Kiefer' or 'Riefer.' If you know the artist please write and tell us. The back of the jacket lists other volumes from the publisher as do both inside flaps. This was author Mary Jane Holmes 1825 - 1907 first novel and was first published in 1854. It was her most popular of more than 30 novels selling more than a quarter of a million copies during her lifetime. Holmes used her experiences as a teacher living and working in rural Kentucky as inspiration for this novel. The daughters of a rural planter Julia nicknamed Tempest and Fanny nicknamed Sunshine based on their personalities are the titular characters of the novel. In 1910 a silent movie based on the novel also called Tempest and Sunshine was produced. The novel had been adapted into popular plays and skits prior to the movie. This volume is not a movie tie-in featuring stills from the film. From jacket: "A new edition . printed from new large type plates on fine book paper and handsomely bound in cloth with picture inlay on front cover." This book is part of the publisher's Mary J Holmes Series reprints of her novels. We note some rubbing transfer to the jacket red from another volume has transferred and the fragile jacket is chipping along bottom front and top back; there are also some small losses elsewhere on the jacket including flap seams; there is an half inch tear on top and a one inch tear on back and several other smaller tears. The reverse of the jacket has some taped repairs and discoloration. The back of jacket has some light soil or discoloration. Pages 10-15 have light spots on the margin. The book has edgewear and a bumped head and heel of spine. The fep and rep have lightly tanned areas due the jacket flaps. The spine and back of book have foxing or discoloration underneath the dust jacket. Fep has pencilled notations. There are some 'scrapes' on the bottom of book and near the bottom of outside pages that are suggestive of past insect damage. Dealer Direct Payment Only.
