Octavo original cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the second free endpaper "Mrs. David Haines From Anna M. Holstein Nov 15th 1886." The recipient's husband David Haines was enlisted in the 3rd Cavalry of the Union Army during the Civil War. A previous owner has completed the author's printed name "Mrs. H." as "Mrs. Holstein" on the title page an introduction. In very good condition with minor loss to the crown and foot of the spine. Scarce and desirable in the original cloth and signed by the author. An important eye-witness account of northern hospitals during the Civil War. Anna Morris Holstein and her husband William H. Holstein enlisted with the U.S. Sanitation Commission following William's service in the Pennsylvania militia during Lee's 1862 invasion. After witnessing the carnage at Antietam the wealthy couple felt called to serve their country as Anna noted "we have no right to the comforts of our home while so many of the noblest of our land renounce theirs." Anna struggled with the grisly realities of war and later admitted that she was frequently of little use until she could gain control of her composure and stop crying. Following the war publisher J.B. Lippincott capitalized on the hunger for war stories first with Hospital Sketches then less successfully with Notes of Hospital Life 1864. J.B. One page the map depicts in detail North and South America as well as western portions of Europe and Africa with a large decorative cartouche. Homann's second map of the Western Hemisphere the present map provided new details in the interior of North America particularly along the Mississippi River. At the time of publication the Northwest coast of America and the Northwest Passage were still undiscovered. Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 31.25 inches by 29.25 inches. In fine condition. German engraver and publisher Johann Baptist Homann and his family were the most famous German map publishers of the mid-18th century. Very tasteful new binding in antique 16th century style with 4 raised bands on the back and a red shield in the second compartment. Title with woodcut borders depicting in the lower part the adoration of Christ by the three Magi; the text of the title is flanked by 2 pillars; on the upper part two winged putti that flank a coat of arms; on the shield of it a kind of thornbush thorns - antlers; above the shield are the three crowns of the arms of the city Cologne. The woodcut at the end of the Ilias depicts Saint George killing the dragon Condition: The title is slightly soiled and its right margin and that of the last leaf are thumbed. A tiny and almost invisible hole in the title Note: 'Despite the faltering knowledge of Greek in the early Middle Ages stories of the battle of Troy and the wanderings of Odysseus never lost their appeal in the European imagination. Christian intellectuals read and reread these tales in late antique Latin paraphrases that communicated most of the content but little of the poetic virtuosity of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Some like the Ilias latina which condensed Homer's poem into 1070 lines of Latin hexameter were crude distillations of long familiar stories. Others like the 'Ephemeris belli Troiani' of Dictys Cretensis and the 'Historia de excidio Troiae' of Dares Phrygius were presented as Latin translations of lost Greek accounts of the fall of Troy allegedly composed by individuals who had taken part in the battle. In the absence of the Greek originals these Latin texts mediated the tale of Troy's fall to medieval readers for almost a millenium. . It was only in the 14th century that early humanists sought out Homer's poems in Greek and rendered them into Latin for a learned audience eager to devour the poet's words even if they were mediated in another language. By the end of the 15th century 17 Latin translations of the works of Homer had appeared. G.S. Scott's review of B. Schneider and Chr. Meckelnborg 'Odyssea Homeri a Francisco Griffolino Aretino in Latinum translata' in 'The Medieval Review' of 13-03-06 The most influential one was the prose translation of The Italian humanist Lorenzo Valla latinized as Laurentius Valla 1407-1457 famous student of the humanist scholar Giovanni Aurispa promoter of the revival of Greek studies in Renaissance Italy. In 1450 Valla was appointed professor of Rhetoric in Rome. He is one of the founders of historical criticism. On the basis of textual analysis he proved that the so-called 'Donation of Constantine' in the decree of Gratian was a forgery being an interpolated passage. 'In the domain of pure scholarship Valla's reputation mainly rests on his widely diffused work 'On the Elegancies of the Latin language' the result of many years of labour. He here attacks the barbarous Latin of the Middle Ages and of his own times.' Sandys 268 As a Greek scholar Valla translated Thucydides Herodotus and the 'De Corona' of Demosthenes. In the service of the king of Naples he translated between 1442 and 1444 the first 16 books of the Ilias of Homer. The frontispiece and engraved plates depict scenes from the Ilias; they were designed by Fr. Roettiers Nattier A. Dieu & F. Delamonce and executed by Edelinck & Chaufourier. Woodcut head-pieces Condition: Binding scuffed corners bumped. Leather of the turn-in of the lower board partly worn away. Flyleaves removed. A tiny strip of a few millimeters of the blank upper-margin of the title has been torn off not affecting any text. The first gathering is slightly stained in the gutter. One small wormhole in the blank right upper corner of the first half of the book. Another small wormhole near the gutter of the blank left inner corner of the last half of the book Note: The French classical scholar Anne Dacier 1645-1720 published in 1699 a French prose translation of the Ilias of Homer. She wanted to rehabilitate the poet who suffered from a bad reputation in France because of inferior translations with a translation which would restore Homer's original lustre. It was thought that Homer's poetry was bad and implausible and sometimes improper. The French author Houdar de la Motte 1672-1731 took it upon himself to prune Homer and produced a refashioned and civilized version of Madame Dacier's translation. He used her translation because he didnot know any Greek. In 1714 he published his translation of the Ilias reduced to 12 books. De la Motte condensed the Iliad by polishing away everything he thought silly dull cruel tedious or inappropiate to the taste and mind of a French gentleman. The fierce battle scenes described by Homer in books X-XV 4000 verses were summarized in 400. Many lines were replaced by meaningless verses. In the introductory 'Discours' of 180 p. De la Motte elaborated on the principles of his translation. He is convinced that he restored with his pruned version the original beauty of Homer. The translation is prededed by a short Ode 'L'Ombre d'Homère' in which the Frenchman conjures up the ghost of Homer and asks him to show him the way in his undertaking. He tells Homer 'Je veux sous un nouveau language/ rajeunir ton antique ouvrage'. Homer simply has to tell him 'Dis-moi comme il faut t'imiter'. p. CLXXVI. The ghost of Homer asks De la Motte 'Saufe-moi l'affront d'ennuyer' p. CLXXVII and orders him 'Respecte le goût de ton âge'. He commissions him to create the poetry as he would have created had he lived in France in his age. When the ghost disappears De la Motte concludes 'Homere m'a laissé sa Muse/ Et si mon orgueil n'en abuse/ Je vais faire ce qui'il eût fait'. p. ‎Very Good. 1923. On offer is a super manuscript relic of one man's life spent in the Royal Navy serving in submarines for 22 years. Titled 'SHUT OFF FROM DIVING 1923-1945 The Ramblings of a Plumber' the book was written by British Warrant Engineer Leslie Honeywill who was a Chief Engine Room Artificer CERA or a plumber as he jokingly called himself on a number of submarines. Leslie writes in his intro: 'The material used in this story has been extracted from diaries written during the period covered. It is thus chronological and consequently rather disjointed in its presentation. It will have little interest except to submariners and probably not a lot for those who are or were. It contains no excitements but is an attempt to portray how one submariner enjoyed life met and overcame problems enjoyed the companionship of some wonderful friends - if the contents are mainly connected with the engine room department that of course was my particular concern but we were a team from the youngest seaman to the CO and no one could have wished for a more satisfying life.' Periscope Personalities is a typed manuscript bound as a single volume c.1973 being a compilation of extracts from various histories which give an account of experiences opinions and stories of submarine leaders. Leslie Honeywill published many articles and books on naval subjects he was Chief Engine Room Artificer born in St John Pembroke Dock in 1899 and died in 1979. He became a leading authority on Submarine Navy subjects and after the war was consulted by High Ranking Navy officers. The foreword in which Leslie Honeywill describes this book manuscript is as follows: 'In this compilation an attempt has been made to present some of the experiences opinions and others' opinions of submarine leaders commanding officers engineers and constructors of the Royal Navy. Over 150 names are included and 100 sources used. Many eminent submariners have been omitted either to avoid repetitive events or for lack of material relating to their exploits. Enough has however been included to provide some idea of the range of activities of our submariners from Holland-1 of 1901 to the present day' L Honeywill July 1973. Chez Antoine Urbain Coustelier à Paris 1724 9.50 x 16 cm 2 volumes reliés The most complete early edition and the last partly in first edition before that produced in 1857 by Antoine de Latour which was more exhaustive. ""These two volumes which follow the collection of French poets published by Coustelier are difficult to find"". Brunet IV 1071. Full red morocco binding ca 1860 stamp-signed on the pastedown Belz-Niedrée. Spine with raised bands elegantly and richly decorated. Triple fillet frame on boards. Wide inner decorative border. Gilt edges. Traces of rubbing on the raised bands the lower and upper joints of volume I with slight cracking but without weakness the upper joint of volume 1 restored. Overall very fresh. The title pages have been inverted without consequence that of volume I appears before the contents of volume II and vice versa. Very handsome copy perfectly established. Racan's poetry follows in the tradition of Desportes and Ronsard. Malherbe his master whom he met at the age of 16 would reproach him for his nonchalance and excessive liberties but considered him his most gifted pupil; indeed his writing is more fluid but also more rustic. After Malherbe's death Racan abandoned his pen for 20 years. Although desirous like his ancestors to distinguish himself in a military career his dreamy and distracted nature brought him numerous setbacks and he eventually withdrew from it. He produced in 1619 at the age of 30 the poem that would make him famous: Les Bergeries which is his most substantial work; and at 24 proposed by Richelieu he would occupy a seat at the French Academy. Contemporary bindings in full brown grained calf spines with five raised bands decorated with red morocco title and volume labels as well as gilt compartments and fleurons gilt arms of Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon stamped at the foot of the spines endpapers and pastedowns of combed paper gilt roll on leading edges all edges speckled red. Head caps missing on three volumes 3 5 and 10 and partially damaged on three others 1 4 and 8 that of the tail of the first volume absent and those of volumes 6 and 10 partially missing. Some corners slightly bumped. Two angular tears without loss to pages 1 and 35 of the first volume one tear repaired with adhesive to page 30 of the same volume. One tear without loss to the edge of page 261 of volume 4 final endpapers slightly restored in this same volume. Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon 1678-1737 comte de Toulouse last of the legitimized children of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan formed an important library of more than 5000 works in his château de Rambouillet.
