This American naval commander awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1933 gained fame in 1898 when he sunk the "Merrimac" during a naval maneuver in a channel at Santiago Cuba; from 1907 to 1915 he served as a representative from Alabama. Exceptionally bold and attractive "Compliments of / Richmond Pearson Hobson / with apologies for delay -- / Hong Kong April 21 1900" in brown ink heavy stock 3½" X 2½" card. Very good. Mild age toning; faint mounting traces at a couple corners. A choice example signed near the height of his fame. With original envelope cancelled in the Philippines on 22 May 1900. unknown

He Continued The Work Of His Philosophical Teacher Josiah Royce The Founder Of American Idealism In Revising Idealism To Integrate And Fit Into Empiricism Naturalism And Pragmatism. He Said That Metaphysics Has To Make Inductions From Experience: "That Which Does Not Work Is Not True." His Major Field Of Study Was The Philosophy Of Religion But His 22 Books Included Discussions Of Philosophy And Human Rights World Politics Freedom Of The Press The Philosophical Psychology Of Human Nature; Education; And More. In 1908 He Was Called To Yale Where He Served As An Assistant Professor And Published His First Major Work The Meaning Of God In Human Experience 1912. In 1914 Hocking Returned To Harvard Where He Eventually Became Alford Professor Of Natural Religion Moral Philosophy And Civil Polity. Returning To Harvard After The War Hocking Made The Rest Of His Career There. He Led A Highly Influential Study Of Missions In Mainline Protestant Churches In 1932. The Commission's Report Entitled Re-Thinking Missions: A Laymen's Inquiry After One Hundred Years 1932 And Known As The "Hocking Report" Reflected Changing Ideas About The Role Of Western Missionaries In Other Cultures And Generated Fierce Debate. Commission Members Traveled To Asian Cities To Meet Missionaries And Local People. While In China Hocking Consulted With Pearl S. Buck Who Was Developing A Similar Critique Of Missions And Who Later Threw Her Support Behind The Commission's Report. The Commission Recommended A Greater Emphasis On Education And Welfare Transfer Of Power To Local Groups Less Reliance On Evangelizing With Respectful Appreciation For Local Religions. A Recommended Related Goal Was The Transition Of Local Leadership And Institutions. From 1920 To The Late-1930S Hocking Was A Regular Lecturer At The Naval War College In Newport Rhode Island Where He Lectured On "Morale" "Psychology" And "Leadership. Influenced By His Visit To China Hocking Published A Characteristically Open Minded Study Of The Twelfth-Century Chinese Philosopher Zhu Xi. He Argued That Zhu Xi's Thought Was "Scientific" Which Not All European Philosophers Could Claim And Therefore Had Something To Teach Westerners About Democracy. In 1936 Hocking Was Invited To Give The Hibbert Lectures At Oxford And Cambridge Universities In England. These Reflected His Thinking About The Relation Of Christianity To Other World Religions As He Had Begun To Support A Universal Religion. Hocking Thought The Important Elements Were "A Belief In Obligation In A Source Of Things Which Is Good In Some Kind Of Permanence For What Is Real In Selfhood And In The Human Aspect Of Deity." He Pins His Hope More On The Common People Throughout The World Than On The Theologians. In Political Philosophy Hocking Claimed That Liberalism Must Be Superseded By A New Form Of Individualism In Which The Principle Is: "Every Man Shall Be A Whole Man."12 He Believed That Humans Have Only One Natural Right: "An Individual Should Develop The Powers That Are In Him. The Most Important Freedom Is "The Freedom To Perfect One's Freedom." Perhaps Hocking's Most Important Contribution To Philosophy Is "Negative Pragmatism" Which Means That What "Works" Pragmatically Might Or Might Not Be True But What Does Not Work Must Be False. Hocking's Criterion Was Corroborated By Richard Feynman Who Stated That Anything Described As True ". Could Never Be Proved Right Because Tomorrow's Experiment Might Succeed In Proving Wrong What You Thought Was Right ." And ". Day. Near fine. Staple holes at upper left not affecting text. Chatty personal note on letterhead of Headquarters V Corps. "Lydia will join me here soon and we will settle to normal living again. Mother is much better now." With original envelope addressed in Hodge's hand and also signed. Uncommon. Accompanied by a superb original 1949 black-and-white glossy news agency photograph International News Photo 8½" X 6½". Original newsprint mimeographed text sheet still present and tipped to verso as issued. Titled "Says Reds Arm Koreans and Flout Pact" this text begins: "Called back to the United States for an over-all review of the Korean situation Lt. General John R. Hodge U.S. Commander in Korea is shown right with Secretary of War Robert Patterson as he went to report to President Truman." This exceptional image is pristine and itself scarce. This nonacademic English philosopher was a companion of William James with whom he belonged to the London group "Scratch Eight"; he was the first president 1880-94 of the Aristotelian Society; among his books are "The Metaphysic of Experience" "The Philosophy of Reflection" and "Time and Space." ALS 3pp 4½" X 7" Lincolnshire England 1870 July 18. Addressed to "My dear Harris." Very good. Good content referring to the political situation in France. In part: "If you go to Paris now you will find it at a most interesting time in all the fever of the beginning of the war. I think their going to war on the part of France out of pure jealousy of Prussia utilised by Napoleon for the supposed interest of his own dynasty is treason to the cause of civilisation and the union of Western Europe." Sure enough France declared war on Prussia the very day after Hodgson penned this letter. Mentions his summer plans "quietly and steadily reading in London in August when London is empty and though hot not feverish". A handsome and interesting example. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown

Little is known about this popular 19th century American composer and pianist except the names of some of his compositions which include "Night Before Petersburgh" 1867 "The Nation's Hero Grand March" 1868 "Love Among the Roses" 1870 "The Mocking Bird" 1872 "Lutheran Hymn" 1879 and "Polka de Concert" 1882. AMuQS 1p 6" X 4" City Hotel Providence R.I. 10 April 1872. Very good. Faint age toning at edges with couple of miniscule archivally-closed on verso edge tears. Hoffman handsomely pens in brown ink three measures of music identifying them above as "'Polka' / The Belles of Providence" and boldly signing below adding the date and place. One of only two mayors of New York City 1866-68 to be elected that state's governor 1869-72 this politician's association with corrupt William Tweed and Tammany Hall ruined his political career. ALS 2pp 5" X 8" New York NY 1872 August 7. Addressed to Richard Lathers 1821-1903 prominent Charleston and later New York commission merchant banker diplomat insurance and railroad executive. Near fine. Cordial note to a friend: "I am on my way to your family at Newport and will go with them to White Mountains. I cannot hope to accept your kind offer this Summer unless perhaps for a single day when I can stop over on going between Albany and Newport. I read your speech this morning with great pleasure." The noted physicist and mathematician collaborated with Albert Einstein on the classic "Gravitational Equations and the Problem of Motion" while at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study then in 1972 co-authored the biography "Albert Einstein: Creator and Rebel" with Einstein's secretary Helen Dukas; from 1937 through the late 1970s he taught at Queens College. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Princeton New Jersey on 4 March 1979 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 15-cent "Einstein" stamp at upper right. London: N.p. Hardcover. Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Cooke and Davenport. Quartos. 303 pages in two volumes. Contains 146 of 148 plates possibly as published. Absent are the last 2 plates in Volume II "Before and After" which were frequently left out due to their showing a couple just prior and after sex still fully clothed. Otherwise collates complete. Hardcovers bound full publisher's cloth with cover designs embossed in gilt. The bindings are worn and bumped and are now housed in clear mylar or acetate dust jackets. The front hinge of Volume I is cracking and a type of flexible glue appears to have been applied to prevent separation. Text blocks are sound. All edges gilt. Undated but appear to be from the 1840s-1850s. The title pages are printed in dark blue and red. Most if not all of the engravings have their tissue guards. There is no tissue guard at the page describing the final plates of Volume II "Before and After" and their is no evidence of plates being removed. <br/> <br/> N.p. hardcover
