Written by Hiram Maynard of Waterloo Iowa this delightful and well-written diary spans the last half of his senior year in high school and the early portion of his freshman year at what I believe is Marietta College in Marietta Ohio. Provided are entries for most days of the year 1914. Browsing through it becomes evident that the young man came from a fairly affluent family and associated with friends who were also well off. Noted is that his father was employed by the Ciitizens Gas and Electric Company of Waterloo. There are frequent references to automobiles a most expensive luxury in 1909! hotel stays out-of-town visits attendance theatre/movie/vaudeville performances and one entry makes reference to his own motorcycle. It also sems that his parents were fairly liberal in his upbringing given his late hours though it's clear that the young man led a wholesome life popular with his many friends involved in school and church activities. Note his reference to hearing a Garfield speech: a relation to a relative of the then-late President Garfield Presumably it was a campaign speech for Republican congressional candidates in the then-forthcoming November election. Note also the fine penmanship. ‎ASEA ABOARD USS DACOTAH BRAZIL FALKLAND IS. Fair. 1866. On offer is a super original 1866 manuscript relic of maritime and naval history being a journal handwritten by US Navy Asst. Engineer Hiram Parker Jr. Dated January 26th 1866 and ending on May 13th 1866 Parker details his voyage on the noted gunboat USS Dacotah to Rio de Janiero Medina Brazil and last entries were from the Faulkland sometimes Falkland Islands known as the Malvinas Islands to most South Americans. Parker and his ship arrive at the height of the intense and horrific "Great War of La Plata" 1864 - 1870 a war against Paraguay which was the bloodiest and most expensive in South American history. Parker does a super job observing and detailing the people the sights and of course matters of interest to a US seaman but first and foremost he spends most of his time describing the culture the people and the politics of Brazil. This is a 7" x 8 1/2" journal has narrative on 86 pages most are full pages. He mentions one young crew member being hit on the head by a sheet block while asleep cracking his skull and killing him also diving boys off ship for coins different machine repairs to the ship but our author has a lovely way with words and carries his love for Country and the ship on his sleeve: "We have indeed been having some rough weather. How the wind did blow & how high the waves ran. I never saw either excelled in all my precious sea going. Ur little craft showed herself equal to the emergency though she experienced a terrible rolling. American oak and iron and American hearts under the American ensign protected by the God of Nations should be equal to any emergency." Each page is filled with interesting observations when they reach Brazil from the holiday for the Emperor's grandson to entries like this: "Acting Master Price was buried in Potters field for the Catholics never permit Protestants to be buried in their cemeteries." This diary is really outstanding for bringing the reader right into the heart of Brazil through the eyes of an heroic 25 year old American veteran of the Civil War with the soul of a poet. Hirzel a physician from Zurich had a very pronounced taste for agriculture; here he delivers his vision through the very precise description of an ideal farm in which a peasant philosopher operates. The work is a very practical manual of agriculture recording the manner of improving potato yield amending a field etc. The particularity of this work is to emphasize the moral conduct of the farmer this conduct being the virtue necessary for the proper functioning of the enterprise. Right lower corner partly and lightly waterstained Note: This collection of biographies of Roman emperors Caesars and usupers was published for the first time in Milan in 1475. It formed part of a bigger collection of historical texts. It was preceded by 'De XII Caesaribus' of Suetonius and followed by work of the late antique historians Eutropius and Paulus Diaconus. The French classical scholar Isaac Casaubon or Isaacus Casaubonus was the first to publish the biographies written by otherwise unknown authors Aelianus Spartianus Iulius Capitolinus Aelius Lampridius Vulcatius Gallicanus Trebellius Pollio & Flavius Vopiscus separately in 1603 under the title of 'Historiae Augustae Scriptores Sex'. The first part contains the text the second the exhaustive commentary of Casaubon. The 30 surviving biographies in this collection were probably written between 293 and 330 A.D. They cover the period from Hadrian to Carinus roughly 117-284/85. The beginning of the collection seems to be lost and the original title is unknown. It seems obvious that the biographies written by Suetonius sometime after 100 A.D. are the example for these 'vitae' of later emperors. The collection is one of the most debated and controversial sources for the history of the Roman emperors. The historic value of the 30 biographies is diverse some seem to be trustworthy and offer useful information others seem to be fiction full of wondrous tales anecdotes and short stories. Some tend to having been written in the tradition of the ancient novel. The obvious falsification of sources and documents rendered the entire collection suspect. Such caution and some of these observations and were already made by Casaubon. 'He revealed some of their inconsistencies and improbable statements. He used considerations of style and content to argue that the works ascribed in the manuscripts to Aelius Spartianus Aelius Lampridius and Julius Capitolinus could more plausibly be ascribed to a single author. He showed that the collection had been edited and revised though the job had been done by an incompetent. He denied that the date or purpose of the revision could be precisely fixed: 'Only a prophet could divine what moved the maker of this collection to arrange it in this form'. A. Some believe that the biographies are propaganda for the Roman emperor Julianus Apostata and his pagan revival ca. 360. The Dutch version of Wikipedia refers to the interesting theory of the historian Jona Lendering stipulating that the collection is an amusing mockumentary meant to show that christianity was a un-Roman ideology. Nowadays the collection of the 'Scriptores Historiae Augustae' is referred to as the 'Historia Augusta' and used with care by ancient historians. He transferred his library to his niece Eleanor Sherman Fitch the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter Maria “Minnie†Ewing Sherman Fitch before he died. Until now this book was held at the family estate in Washington County Pennsylvania. Rare. Ethan Allen Hitchcock was a career United States Army officer and author who had War Department assignments in Washington D.C. during the American Civil War where he served as Major-General.
