‎This American literary critic author and novelist 1901-82 gained fame as spokesman for the American proletarian literary movement of the 1930s which made him one of the best-known Communists of his generation; he authored "The Great Tradition: An Interpretation of American Literature since the Civil War" 1933 co-authored "John Reed: The Making of a Revolutionary" 1936 and became editor of the influential "The New Masses" in 1934. You know those annoying mimeographed Christmas missives that pose as Christmas cards boastfully reciting trips taken family events and other "news" involving friends and relatives only half of whom you've ever heard of Well this is one of those as privately issued by this noted critic for limited distribution to friends and families. It's simply a typed single spaced two-sided affair mimeographed on a single sheet unsigned. Unlike those you receive from your Aunt Ruth or Cousin Earl Granville Hicks's end-of-year update includes mention of the many literary figures in whose circles he circulated: Malcolm Cowley Harvey Swados Wright Morris Newton Arvin Daniel Aaron etc. Hicks's activities too tend to be less mundane than most: For instance "THE LITERARY PROJECT of the year has been the editing of a symposium. Contributors: Wright Morris Herbert Gold Saul Bellow Harvey Swados Mark Harris Jessamyn West Ralph Ellison. to say things that need saying about the serious novel its present predicament and possibilities." "The Living Novel: A Symposium" appeared in 1957. He opens though with the death of his mother; discusses his seminar on novel writing at the New School; short trips "We had a night in Sherman with the Cowleys"; the comings and goings of many literary guests; the death of their old Jeep and arrival of "a brand new jeep station wagon which we treat with a tenderness the jeep would have scorned." And you thought tjhose tiresome printed Christmas letters were a newer phenomenon! Quite interesting amusing and unusual literary artifact – and scarce as well produced in a small quantity for friends and family only. unknown‎

Thick 12mo measures 95mm x 149mm binding size pp 30 433i corrigenda pagei second title page 32 271 some age-toning the first title page a little soiled and with slight tears a tiny contemporary signature on the title page possibly Jas Brown very smartly bound in an unlettered modern full calf lightly blind-stamped new endpapers. The binding is a little tight so the inner margins are slightly awkward to read. Hierocles of Alexandria was a Greek Neoplatonist writer who was active around AD 430. The only complete work of his which has been preserved is this commentary on the Golden Verses of Pythagoras. It enjoyed a great reputation in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and there are numerous translations in various European languages. Several other writings especially one on providence and fate a consolatory treatise dedicated to his patron Olympiodorus of Thebes are quoted or referred to by Photius and Stobaeus. Hierocles argued against astrological fatalism on the basis that it is supported by an irrational necessity rather than a divine rational Providence of God. ‎The rear admiral who served as commander-in-chief of the North Atlantic Fleet 1901-03 took part in the attack on Fort Sumter saw action aboard the Colorado as part of the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron in 1861-62 and the Judith in Pensacola Harbor and was executive officer on the Housatonic when she was destroyed by a torpedo off Charleston; from 1865-68 he served aboard the Hartford in the Asiatic Squadron. ‎Children's book and periodical illustrator about whom little is known; in April May and June 1889 Hill provided the illustrations for Sarah Orne Jewett's serialized tale "A Bit of Color" for "St. Nicholas" magazine later expanded into the 1890 novel "Betty Leicester: A Story of Girls" and his work appears in many other turn-of-the-century books and periodicals. Superb original ink-and-wash drawing 12" X 9" n.p. n.d. Near fine. Neatly mounted to heavy art board. A nighttime flood scene it shows half-submerged buildings and flotsam with a man in a three-piece suit uncomfortably straddling a tall post and a small boat rowed by a black woman pulling up alongside. On the verso in an unidentified hand presumably an editor's the title "Clarissy Ann and the Flood" is noted the scene identified "Clarissy Ann rescues her landlord" and a caption is given "'I kin help you if you agree to a few things' said Clarissy.". This same hand also indicates "St. Nic." -- a reference to "St. Nicholas: An Illustrated Magazine for Young Folks" edited by Mary Mapes Dodge published 1873-1939. This was one of two illustrations for this short story pp. 688-91 which ran in the Volume 23 Part II in 1896. L.E. Chittenden 1824-1900 author and banker and politician best known as Register of the U.S. Treasury in the Lincoln administration authored the story. From the noted autograph collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. A striking piece of original illustration art. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item along with a modern copy of this short story. unknown‎

On offer is the original manuscript diary that details and documents two years in the career of John Boynton Philip Clayton Hill 1879-1941 a noted lawyer and politician from Baltimore MD graduate from John Hopkins University 1900 and Harward law department 1903 who served as U.S. Attorney for the district of Maryland from 1910 to 1915 as judge advocate for the 15th Division attached to the 14th Cavalry Mexican border service and as Major and Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army during the World War I. At the time the diary was written he was running a law practice in Maryland - the diary contains a printed card dated May 1915 about expiration of the Law firm Hill Ross & Hill and continuation of general law practice by John Philip Hill: "John Philip Hill recently United States Attorney for Maryland will continue the general practice of law specializing in inter-state commerce and federal departmental matters and in the trial of causes in federal and state courts". The diary covers the first seven month in 1917 before Hill started his army service the last entry for that year made on July 25th:: "Ordered for war duty in office of the Adjutant General of Maryland"; the next entry was made on October 1 1919: "Returned from France April 29 1919. Discharged from Army May 9 1919. Resumed practice today" followed by a newspaper clipping and a printed advertisement about forming partnership with Daniel R. Randall and Oscar Leser "for the general practice of the law under the firm name of Hill Randall & Leser" with offices in Washington and Baltimore. The diary documents his law practice and political activity mentioning the cases he worked on places and events he attended meetings with other lawyers clients politicians. The diary mentions his meetings with many prominent persons lawyers judges politicians generals and senators such as William Phillips assistant secretary of state at that time senators Peter Gerry Hale and McKellar generals McCaine and Mann famous financier and art collector Clarence Mackay whom he was visiting at his Harbor Hill residence and many other. Entry of April 17 1917: "Went to Washington at 12 with S. and lunched with Senator P.G Peter Galley.Saw senators Fred Hale France McKellar and sat at the Senate Gallery for a time to hear debate on the 7 billion dollar war bill". Most prominent subjects include Special Session of Congress on April 2 1917 where President Wilson delivered his "War Message" Senate debates Republican Party events second inauguration of Woodrow Wilson and some law cases. Some records reflect events of his personal life three entries in Aril 1917 are about death of Charles Ebenezer Hill: "Charles E. Hill died at Temple N.H. at 4 a.m. this morning. his death was unexpected and a shock to me for which I was not prepared. He was 69." The records about cases are mostly brief mentioning client's name and time of meeting sometimes providing a judge name details about the stage of the case and the aspect on which Hill was working. In 1917 among other cases many entries are mentioning Headley Chocolate Factory in 1919 he actively worked on a case involving Baugh Chemical. There are two collections of John Philip Hill papers currently held by the Library of Congress and by the Historical Society of Maryland. The book has maroon hard cover with black letters "JPH" John Philip Hill stamped on the front cover and on the spine. It contains 368 numbered pages some of them blank. There is a large gap between page 200 containing the last entry for 1917 and page 267 with the first entry for the year of 1919.
