Rare second English edition "the best English edition" Howes of the Constitutions of the thirteen newly independent American states published only one year after the first English edition with early printings of the Declaration of Independence the Articles of Confederation and important U.S.-French treaties. Preceded by the 1781 American edition of only 200 copies and the 1782 first English edition neither of which included the Declaration of Rights the Petition to the King the Non-Importation Agreement or the Dutch treaty. Royal octavo bound in one quarter contemporary calf over marbled boards morocco spine label lettered in gilt gilt ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands. Without portrait of Washington; List of the Presidents of the American Congress and 3 pp of ads at rear. Howes C-716; Sabin 16088. In very good condition. Scattered toning and some underlining and marginalia. Ownership name to the title page. An important cornerstone of American constitutional history. This rare second English edition of The Constitutions of the Several Independent States of America contains early printings of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation as well as the Declaration of Rights a forerunner to the Declaration and the Non-Importation Agreement Congress’s response to taxation without representation. Also included are the 1778 Treaty of Amity and Commerce with France the Treaty of Alliance with France and the Provisional Articles of Peace signed by the United States and Great Britain in November 1782 which—with only minor revisions—became the definitive peace treaty the following year. The volume further features one of the earliest English printings of the important 1782 treaty between the United States and the Dutch Republic the first concluded with a nation other than France as well as the final Petition of Congress to the King delivered in London by Richard Penn. Shortly after publication of the earlier 1782 edition The Monthly Review described the work as “the book which may be considered the Magna Carta of the United American States.†Printed for J. President George Washington had died on December 14 1799 less than three years after leaving office. His sudden death inspired mourning throughout the new nation. Major William Jackson fought in the American Revolution and became aide to Major General Benjamin Lincoln before being assigned to General Washington's staff. In 1795 he married Elizabeth Willing daughter of Thomas Willing a prominent Philadelphia merchant and banker. In 1796 Washington appointed him Collector of the Port of Philadelphia which post he held until 1801 when President Thomas Jefferson dismissed him. In 1799 Jackson became president of the Society of the Cincinnati remaining in that office until his death in 1828. Very scarce. In 1775 Before The American War Of Independence Broke Out He Led Troops To Salem Massachusetts Looking For Contraband Weapons. His Advance Was Delayed By A Standoff At A Bridge During Which The Colonists Removed The Weapons He Was Looking For. His Force Was Eventually Allowed To Proceed But Found Nothing Of Consequence And Was Received With Hostility During The Expedition. In 1776 Leslie Was Promoted To Brigadier-General. He Fought In The Battle Of Long Island The Landing At Kip's Bay The Battle Of White Plains And The Battle Of Harlem Heights The Battle Of Princeton And The Siege Of Charleston During The American War Of Independence. At Princeton His Nephew Captain William Leslie Was Mortally Wounded. In 1780 He Was Sent To The Chesapeake Bay By Sir Henry Clinton In Order To "Make A Powerful Diversion In Earl Cornwallis's Favor By Striking At The Magazines Then Collecting By The Enemy . For Supplying The Army They Were Assembling To Oppose Him." He Became Major General In 1782 And Was Made Colonel Of The 63Rd West Suffolk Regiment Of Foot The Same Year. ‎England United Kingdom Great Britain. Good with no dust jacket. Non-Book. On offer is an original signature by British scholar Jacob Bryant 1715-1804 described as "the outstanding figure among mythagogues who flourished in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries." Bryant saw all mythology as derived from the Hebrew Scriptures with Greek mythology arising via the Egyptians. His chief works were A New System or Analysis of Ancient Mythology 1774–76 and later editions Observations on the Plain of Troy 1795 and Dissertation concerning the Wars of Troy 1796. He also wrote on theological political and literary subjects. This signature is on a piece of cut paper and includes a salutation. Measuring 3 x 1-3/4 inches the uneven cutting demonstrates age toning and minor edge tears not affecting text. Date unknown. Condition is Good. S. ‎Very Good. 1864. On offer is a significant historical relic of the Civil War being a book of 71 bound-in original handwritten telegraphs dated from May 19 1864 to December 6 1864. All appear to be handwritten and all have been folded at least 2 times or more. Many have original autographs by the sender. Several different types of paper were used to write them on. All in excellent condition. Examples of some of the subjects of telegrams are: Where to send white and colored recruits; payment amounts for recruits; forbidden furloughs granted to recruits by Provost Marshalls; Arrest Acting Masters Mate Edw. Parsons at Lebanon Springs and have him delivered on board the receiving ship North Carolina at Brooklyn Navy Yard plus many many more. The premium book is 8" x 10" with leather spine and corners with gilt stamped title on the spine attests to the importance of the contents. ‎EUSKIRCHEN GERMANY. Good. 1936. On offer is a superb 1936 manuscript relic titled 'Fahrt: Lieder und Bilder' being one German soldier's patriotic paean to forgotten German wars and heroic songs. Handwritten by Jacob Winkel in Euskirchen Germany the soldier presents a very historical German perception of war and the songs of conquerors. This soldier had a passion for the very historical Lion of Brabant which has a history dating back to the 11th century. This may also be a clue to his background as in WWII the Brabant Lion was associated moreso with the Flemish Lion which is understandable as many Belgium produced many troops and even SS soldiers for Germany. They were incredibly anti-communist so most went to serve at the Russian Front. There are more contemporary and lost songs all in the context of the upcoming World War II. The notebook has 26 well filled pages and is illustrated by hand with historical notes which include the drawing of the sword and the harp with the words Platoff refers to Count Platoff general in chief; Hetman of the Don Cossacks refers to Matvei Platov who was the leader of the Don Cossacks and a feared commander of cavalry. Platov's tactics became famous in the 1812 French invasion of Russia when his men lived off the land and constantly harried the much stronger French forces. Using the harsh Russian winter to its best advantage Platov continually punished the beleaguered French infantry on its retreat from Moscow. There is a real photo postcard tucked in the notebook which we can assume was the author himself. A note on the back which we cannot translate may confirm.
