Full straight-grained chocolate brown morocco binding ca 1860. Spine with raised bands decorated. Red morocco title and volume labels. Covers decorated with several framing fillets and rolls and a wide floral frieze. Interior frieze. Edges gilt. Paper of perfect freshness possibly washed. Very handsome copy in unsigned master binding. The single species designates communion by bread or wine. It was in 1681 that Pierre Jurieu published his treatise on communion in a single species in the name of Protestantism. One year later Bossuet wrote a rigorous treatise proving by certain causes that the church practiced the Eucharist under one or two species without anyone ever thinking that the withdrawal of one or the other harmed the integrity of the sacrament. The author shows that there is nothing indispensable in the sacraments except what pertains to their substance; that thus one is not obliged to do in administering them everything that the Savior did in instituting them. The Treatise on Communion says Bayle ""appeared to me very delicate very spiritual and of a courtesy toward us that cannot be praised enough; tight judicious it is cleared of everything that does not bear on the question."" It nonetheless results that Bossuet was subsequently attacked by several Protestant writings and that there was in the 17th century a veritable quarrel around this practical question of the sacrament. Fold marks inherent to the letter's mailing envelope included. Jacques Chardonne intends to challenge two false ideas concerning Paul Morand the first being stylistic in nature: ""There is a double misunderstanding regarding Morand. He has been seen as a 'modern'. but he is essentially a 'naturalist'; his artistic doctrine is exactly that of Maupassant and Flaubert."" holding the latter as a major writer: ""But he has infinitely more talent and intelligence than the writers of the naturalist school."" ; the second of a psychological nature: ""He is hygiene and wisdom incarnate in his person. But through his work he has debased the youth who came after him. It is he who nearly killed Sagan."" Jacques Chardonne then ironizes about Françoise Sagan's talents while exalting the predominance and mastery of his friend Paul Morand in everything he undertakes: ""It is Morand who bought Sagan's terrible cars. But he knows how to drive."" while recalling the cautious advice that Bernard Frank gave to the author of Bonjour tristesse : ""Bernard Frank says: your car doesn't hold the road. Sagan vexed accelerates. And everything capsizes."" As a literary elder brother Jacques Chardonne reassures Roger Nimier about his own talent: ""Morand is very pleased with you. I say that Gaston Gallimard seems to have much friendship for you."" and congratulates his correspondent on the quality of Artaban a review to which Roger Nimier contributes Jacques Chardonne being honored in a recent issue: "". surprised to see myself on the front page; the text fills me with pride. I have scorned honors in order to be honored. I could not have been better served than in this little text."" and attributes the authorship of the text concerning him to one of his Hussard disciples: "". I tell myself: it's Nimier or Hecquet or Milliau. Truth be told I don't know. And I thank the Lord."" Overwhelmed by so many tributes paid to him Jacques Chardonne lucid prefers to avoid being too much in the spotlight: ""That is why I no longer want to publish anything. As soon as one applauds you you must leave."" Addressing an unidentified recipient Jacques Chardonne invites his correspondent to obtain Christine Garnier's work ""L'homme et son personnage"" published by Grasset in 1955: "". Tachez de trouver ce livre emportez-le et gardez-le. Il peut vous être utile plus tard quand il y aura la nuit derrière vous."" ""Try to find this book take it with you and keep it. It may be useful to you later when there will be night behind you."" To conclude his letter Jacques Chardonne offers a final and no less curious piece of advice filled with ironic false candor: ""Je vous recommande spécialement le Chardonne. Il m'a surpris par sa constance dans une certaine voie. A vous. JC."" ""I especially recommend the Chardonne. He surprised me with his consistency in a certain way. Yours. JC."" Mailing fold as expected. For Jacques Chardonne capitalism rests not on money but on men: ""Money is nothing; it gives nothing saves nothing it's the barometer that's all. Everything rests on men. . this is very clear in publishing. Le Mercure is a good example Charpentier likewise; all the 'literary' publishers for that matter."" . Do reserves of publishers exist when they are lacking in a house Charpentier was a 'publisher'; the Fasquelles were nothing; similarly Arthème Fayard was a publisher; his successors nothing."". ""One can pour capital which is what we do today into a house without a 'publisher' and without authors; it's like pissing on sand"". Jacques Chardonne also attacks a consolation prize that displeases him because of its political connotation the exploitation of misfortune: ""I thought that the 'consolation prize' was a figure of speech: I had no idea that she was really poor. . what I don't much like about this prize is the political background; the exploitation of misfortune. This has gone on long enough."" He also sharply criticizes certain people like Pierre Dumayet: ""You can't imagine Dumayet's behavior. If a nice little lady sings on television quite often it's because she agreed to see him! I know one who fled I had recommended her to Dumayet immediately."" or Roger Nimier: ""I read Boisdeffre's article on 'five years before'. He's right. 1952 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND PHOTO JOURNAL OF A YOUNG FRENCH CANADIAN SKI JUMPER'S TRIP REPRESENTING HIS COUNTRY AT THE OSLO WINTER OLYMPICS
OSLO NORWAY QUEBEC CANADA. Good. 1952. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of Canadian Olympic aspirations and accomplishment at the 1952 Winter Olympic Games at Oslo Norway being a diary and photo journal handwritten and compiled by Jacques Charland who was a member of the Canadian Olympic ski jumping team in the 1950's and 60's. Mr. Charland does a great job documenting his trip to Oslo in 1952 to represent Canada as a premier ski jumper and provides a ground eye perspective of being an Olympic participant. The large over-stuffed 6 x 9½ inch French language save for the English inscription diary contains 40 handwritten pages starting from his departure in January to his return in March of 1952. The first page is also signed by 20 members of the Canadian Olympic Team. Along with the narrative there are also 140 original photos including many taken at the games and some newspaper clippings. Charland begins: "Three Rivers January 14th 1951 a mistake when he wrote 1951 because all of the pages after that are for 1952. "Jacques Charland 1032 Chapleau St. 3-Rivers P.2. For my trip to Oslo Norway and other European Countries. This book is for the purpose of an exact day to day report and of my first trip across the ocean by plane to foreign countries. Signed Jacques Charland." Most of the photos are snapshots and are black and white however there are also some color photos. They are not only of the games but also of his sight seeing adventures including the people he's with and met. It was difficult picking out the photos to share with you as I could have easily scanned most of them they are that good. The diary is about 6" x 9 ½" and is almost 2" thick. The first page has a cut out of it at the bottom but the rest of the pages look good even with some age toning. Possibly seven photos are missing as just the four cornered tabs are left but there are still 140 photos in this journal. The marbled cover features some Olympic stamps.
