Corners bumped boards chafed. Paper foxed and yellowing. Lacking the volume 1 and 3/5 Note: Theodoretus 393-466 A.D. is one of the most successful writers of the Eastern Church. He was 'from 423 bishop of Cyrrhus Syria. From 428 he was involved in the Christological controversy between his friend Nestorius and Cyrill of Alexandria. He became Cyrill's leading critic. Deposed by the monophysite Council of Ephesus 449 he was rehabilitated at Chalcedon in spite of strenuous protests 451 but his attacks on Cyrill received posthumous condemnation under Justinian at the Council of Constantinople 553. His well-composed letters written in elegant prose are informative about both secular and ecclesiastical matters. His 'Graecarum Affectionum Curatio' is painstaking and thorough in contrasting Christianity and paganism. His 'Church History' from Constantine to 428 contains many invaluable documents. The 'Religious History' contains biographies of ascetics. The rest of his work is biblical exegesis and theological controversy both of which he conducted well'. OCD 2nd edition p. 1055 § Theodoretus' exegetical commentaries are according to Quasten among the finest specimens of the Antiochene School and remarkable for their combination of terseness and lucidity. In his interpretation of Holy Scripture Theodoretus adopts a middle course avoiding the radicalism of Theodore of Mopsuestia and his excessive literalness and allowing an allegorical and typological explanation whenever this appears preferable. Quasten 3539 § Theodoretus' 'Opera Omnia' was produced by the German scholars J.L. Schulze and J.A. Noesselt and reprinted in J.P. Migne 'Patrologia Graeca' volumes 80-84. One of 50 deluxe copies printed on Japan paper with wide margins artist's signature and date in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in the lower margin with the numbered stamp of the deluxe issue on verso some foxing. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Germinie Lacerteux by the Goncourts. A magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of previously unpublished chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Epoque. Each delivery of four prints was issued in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe issue: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful impression. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomania."" The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and devoted to preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. Contemporary half orange morocco binding with corners signed Strobants. Raised band spine decorated with mirror irons set in a succession of compartments roulettes at head and tail. Top edge gilt. Covers and spine preserved. Some foxing on the title page and in the margins but very rare. Engraved armorial bookplate by Malatesta: Bibliothèque de Monsieur H. Del Monte. Painter engraver and illustrator Alexandre Lunois remained renowned for his color lithographic washes. To interpret his own drawings he employs an almost forgotten process treating the stone with a brush dipped in lithographic ink in other words like a wash. The textures nuances color contrasts obtained distinguish his style. The result is a contrasted and violent style which perfectly illustrates orientalism as seen in Fortunio a true painter's book and one of his major productions. He delights in giving different states of his engravings whose deep blacks are remarkable. About an orientalist plate Edmond de Goncourt notes in his journal: ""A very remarkable plate is a lithograph by Lunois entitled Danseuses espagnoles dans la danse. A plate of the greatest character escaping Japanese imitation through the intensity of tones the raw blue of the background the yellow the frank red the blacks of nocturnal shadow in full figure.""
