1906 through 1948 ORIGINAL GROUP OF SIX 6 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES AND LEDGERS DETAILING THE DEPTH AND BREADTH OF EARLY 20th CENTURY WOMEN'S INTERESTS AND THOUGHT
AMHERST MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1906. On offer is an outstanding collection of minute books records and ledger of a significant Women's Club that has been in continuous operation for well over 100 years. In 1900 Minnie Dana founded a club for women with a mission "To promote interest of the members in Literature Science Art and other timely topics of vital importance; to further social relations among its members; and to contribute to the welfare of the community" Thus began the Thursday Club a club that operates to this day well over a century later. The meetings focused on an eclectic range of subjects and members were expected to speak on a wide variety of topics. These topics included biographies the suffrage movement the effects of industrialization a trip to Hawaii Shakespeare History taking care of the feeble minded etc. It is clearly evident that these were well-educated women who were engaged in the world around them. Each journal follows a consistent format with the exception of the last one - it is a Treasurer's Report and ledger book. The first journal covers a time period of 1906 to 1913. It contains a copy of their constitution and most importantly a listing of members. Each meeting followed a standard format: minutes of the previous meeting were read new business discussed and then the program for the afternoon. The report of the Dec 6th 1906 meeting included the topics addressed: 'Topics for the first part were "The Young Nation from 1787 -1815" and "Statesmen of the 18th Century" led by Mrs. Pomeroy who read a paper on the trials discouragements and victories of this. Mrs. Herbert Dickinson gave a sketch of the period life of Alexander Hamilton the youngest statesman of that period and Mrs. Pomeroy a short sketch of Benjamin Franklin the oldest statesman. The 2nd part of the program American Inventors and Inventions was in the charge of Miss Armstrong. Dec 6 1906 This was standard fare for these ladies as the following excerpts will show: Mrs. Gleason and Mrs. Hammond had charge of the program for the afternoon the subject being Later-day Crusades and Crusaders. Mrs. Gleason taking the life and works of Jacob Riis and Judge Ben B. Lindsey and Mrs. Hammond Booker T. Washington and Theodore Roosevelt. . Jan 16 1908 The program in charge of Mrs. Wales consisted of the reading of the first three acts of Shakespeare's play "Julius Caesar". The readers of the play were as follows . a number of ladies' names are then listed Nov 18 1909 The program for the afternoon Famous Canadians of the Twentieth Century in charge of Mrs Mary Pomeroy and Mrs. Albert Wales was then taken up. Mrs. Pomeroy . read an interesting paper on Sir Wilfred Laurier Gov Gen'l Connaught Dr. William Miss Kathleen Parlow musician of note. . Jan 4 1912 The second journal continues the record of meetings held in 1906 picking up in December of that year. The Mar 7th 1907 meeting tackled head on the uncomfortable topic of slavery. The notes record the discussion: . For 1/4 of a century before the War there was a controversy between North and South over the extension of slavery. The South feared the North would soon have large representation in Congress and abolish slavery . Mar 7 1907 The third journal covers 1915 and 1916 The program for the afternoon "Needle and Tongue" in charge of Mrs. Davie was then taken up. Mrs. Howlett played two selections on the Victrola. Mrs. Davie then introduced Miss. Ruth Henry of Amherst as speaker for the afternoon. While the ladies were engaged in various kinds of needlework they listened to a very interesting talk by Miss Henry on her life in Hawaii. . Dec 2 1915 The fourth journal also records meetings in 1915 and 1916 while the fifth journal covers a 6 year period from 1922 until 1928. The latter contains minutes of a number of annual meetings. These meeting offer many details about various members their roles and contributions and their finances. Club membership numbers indicate a healthy and thriving organization: About 100 Club members and three guests gathered in the Vestry of the Church for the Annual Guest Night of the Thursday Club Jan 11th. . p 129 The Treasurers Ledger Book is a detailed record of revenues received mostly raised from dues and a Penny Collection taken each meeting and expenses incurred in operating the Club. The expense listing shows that these women were well aware of issues and events far beyond their walls and include donations to the Red Cross China relief Boys Services and the Western Massachusetts Women's Club. This is an outstanding collection. Although they follow a standardized format the warm personalities of these women still shines through. Along with their weighty discussions there are references to needlework during presentations penny collections etc. They clearly illustrate the depth and breadth of thinking and interests of these women over a period of 100 years. These would be a valuable addition to any Women's Studies program. The continual listing of members by full name makes these very valuable for genealogists. HAMILTON PORT STANLEY AMHERSTBURG CANADA WEST. Good. 1896. Hardcover. On offer is an original manuscript diary dated 1896 handwritten by Theo C. Linn a Brampton Ontario Canada man who travels a lot to Manitoba including Winnipeg Portage La Prairie Brandon and High Bluff Manitoba. He also mentions a number of Ontario towns such as Arden McGregor and of course always Brampton. He's an itinerant teacher bit of a scientist and scholar has a wife named Lottie two young girls named Nora and Rena and on March 2nd his third daughter Vera is born. Fully written and uniquely Lottie writes when Theo can't. Included ephemera includes two photos that are glued to the inside front and back covers. It appears to be Theo and his wife and one of the two younger daughters while in bed. Historians and researchers of the era will have many clues to flesh out Theo's life as we learn: Theo's birthday is on July 13th; Lottie's 27th birthday is on October 29th; Theo's parents wedding anniversary is on July 13th; Theo's and Lottie's wedding anniversary is on June 30th. Valckenaer tell us in the dedication that he has good memories of the Prince's visit to Leiden and how they read poems of Theocritus. The prince was a great book and art collector. Bookplate on the verso of the front flyleaf Note: The Greek poet Theocritus ca. 300 - ca. 260 BC was a native of Syracuse. He is called the father or inventor of bucolic and pastoral poetry and the reviver of the mime. His fame chiefly rests on his Idylls written in hexameter verse and in the Doric dialect. His outstanding dramatic descriptive and lyric qualities are best displayed in his bucolic poetry. 'Theocritus shares with other poets of his age a preference for the short highly finished poem for fresh and sometimes exotic themes and for new forms or old forms used in new ways. Nevertheles he transcends his age in his ability to select and concentrate his material in the freshness of his observation of people and scenes in the vivacity of his narratives and descriptions in imagery and lyricism and above all in his dramatic power.' OCD 2nd ed. p. 1054 § Moschus ca. 150 BC and also from Syracuse is according to Suidas the next after Theocritus to write pastoral poetry. He was an imitator like Bion. § This edition of 1781 is a reissue of the edition which was previously published in 1779 by Le Mair and De Chalmot at Leiden and Kampen. Honkoop purchased the remaining stock of this Theocritius edition after the death of Le Maire changed the impressum on the title page and brought it on the market for a second time now with his own name. § The edition contains Bion and Moschus and the whole of Theocritus. 'It is by far the most critical and valuable which has yet been published; in it the editior has bestowed very great labour upon the restoration of true readings - it contains an amazing fund of valuable illlustrations which no man was ever so well calculated to amass as Valckenaer who to an almost incredible extent of reading united sound ciritism and elegant erudition'. Moss. Valckenaer based his edition on many earlier Theocritus editions e.g. of Zacharias Kallierges Rome 1516 and of Ralph Thomas Winterton Cambridge 1635. He adopted the Latin translation of Theocritus made by the German scholar Helius Eobanus Hessius first published in 1530 supplementing it with translations of Daniel Heinsius and Hugo Grotius. Valckenaer also added 'ex autographis' a Latin translation of Bion & Moschus made by the Dutch poet Ernst Willem Higt latinized as Higtius 1723-1762. Higt was for 6 years a student of Valckenaer in Franeker. After his studies Higt was appointed in 1749 rector of the Gymnasium at Alkmaar. Valckenaer praises in a short 'Lectori' his poetic talents and calls him a 'Poeta graece et latine perdoctus' who 'media aetate nobis omnibus flebilis occidit'. § The Frisian scholar Lodewijk Caspar Valckenaer latinized Ludovicus Casparus Valckenarius 1715-1785 who produced this edition of the Greek poets Theocritus Bion and Moschus was a pupil of Tiberius Hemsterhuis a Frisian too and after him the greatest Dutch classical scholar of the 18th century. Hemsterhuis was professor of Greek at the University of Franeker from 1717 till 1740 and from 1740 till 1765 at the University of Leiden. Hemsterhuis was the founder of a Dutch school of criticism the so-called 'Schola Hemsterhusiana' which had in Valckenaer its best known disciple. Valckenaer studied Greek in Franeker under Hemsterhuis and succeeded to his chair in 1741. In 1765 he left for Leiden once again as successor of his beloved teacher. Both created a golden age of Greek studies in the Netherlands. Still a student Valckenaer edited a Greek lexicon of the grammarian Ammonius 'De adfinium vocabulorum Differentia' Leiden 1739. In Franeker he produced a revised and augmented edition of Fulvio Orsini's 'Virgilius illustratus' Leeuwarden 1747. This title is important for the history of scholarship for its inclusion of the text of the 22nd book of the Iliad of Homer accompanied by an introduction 'variae lectiones' and the 'editio princeps' of scholia of Porphyrius and other hellenistic and byzantine scholars. In 1755 Valckenaer published an edition of Euripides' 'Phoenissae' with his rich commentary and a Latin translation by Hugo Grotius. Among his best works are two other Euripides editions this Hippolytus edition of 1768 and his 'Diatribe in Euripidis perditorum dramatum reliquias' of 1767. Valckenaer also produced editions of the Idylls of Theocritus Leiden 1773 and of the complete works of bucolic poets Theocritus Bion and Moschus. 'Theocriti Bionis et Moschi Carmina Bucolica' Leiden & Kampen 1779. His Callimachus was published posthumously by J. Luzac in 1799 Provenance: This book was bound by the Gouda bookbinder S.H. van der Kraats 'achter de Groote kerk A. 31'. Sijbrand Hendrik van der Kraats born in Workum in 1828 came to Gouda and was there bookbinder from 1855. He died in Gouda in 1904. His small blue paper label is on the front pastedown. We could not trace on the internet any other book bound by this binder. § On the flyleaf the book-label of 'Dr. J.H. Holwerda'. The Dutch archeologist Jan Hendrik Holwerda 1873-1951 was appointed curator at the 'Rijksmuseum van Oudheden' RMO in Leiden in 1904 and in 1910 as its vice president onderdirecteur. In the same year he became lecturer in Leiden in Prehistoric and Roman archeology. In 1919 he succeeded his father as director of the Museum. This directorate lasted till his retirement in 1939. Large special polychrome and gilt plate on the upper cover depicting Richelieu in armor under his cardinal's habit. Plate signed J. Fau. Binding signed Poensin. Headcap and joints rubbed edges and corners as well. Corners turned. Paper very fresh free of foxing. 2 micro tears along the lower joint caused by rubbing the fabric is composed of threads. Vertical and horizontal fold marks from mailing. In the upper right-hand corner the poet has written: envoi de livre à Don Bernardo Calderon. This four-quatrain poem appears to be unpublished and was seemingly not included in the collection ""Les exilés"" published in 1867. «Ce livre pleurant sur la gloire Et sur le bonheur envolé Renferme toute notre histoire Qui donc n'est pas un exilé .
