The first edition is found neither in the Bibliothèque nationale de France nor in the British Library both of which hold the 1672 Couterot copy. Contemporary full vellum binding. Smooth spine with title and author in manuscript. One corner turned. Between the title page and endpaper inner joint opened and spine detached held by several stitches. Trace of pale dampstaining to upper margin sometimes extending onto text from title page to p. 264. Similarly dampstain to lower right corner from p. 427 to end. The paper is relatively clean apart from these pale dampstains. Gathering 43 held by a single stitch. Some gatherings protruding. Jacques Eveillon was canon of the church of Angers. Modern half marbled tawny calf binding with small corners. The spine is a skillful and deceptive pastiche of the original binding. The boards are period unchanged. Smooth spine decorated with roulettes. Gilt title. Boards and corners rubbed. The map is detached. The 2 single plates are shorter on the outer margin. A handsome copy. Just after Bonaparte's Egyptian Campaign Grobert was placed as commander at Giza. He provides us with one of the first Western descriptions of the pyramids with very fine details and measurements as well as their histories. The Anas which were particularly popular in the 17th century are collections of various thoughts anecdotes and witticisms arranged in the greatest disorder and intended for the public as intellectual entertainment. The originality of this work lies in having assembled them in dictionary form though without citing the authors. The whole forms a monumental ana which can thus be browsed from beginning to end with pleasure surprise and instruction: it should be noted that history and historical figures are given pride of place.
