A folio edition was published simultaneously in Strasbourg by Jean Rihel reprinted from the 1558 edition. This 1558 edition is the earliest we have found but according to some sources the first edition would date from 1555. Printer's device on title page. Contemporary binding in full pigskin over wooden boards. Spine with three raised bands. Covers stamped with several friezes and floral frames as well as a garland of medallion portraits of Emperor Charles V. Traces of clasps. Discreet restorations to joints one repaired tear at the level of a raised band second cover with some stains. Missing one endpaper before the title. Numerous contemporary manuscript annotations others later on the front pastedown and title page as well as a library stamp from a Strasbourg seminary. Facing the rigors implemented by Francis I against the Protestants the historian and philologist Jean Sleidan was forced to settle in Strasbourg where he wrote his Commentary on the state of religion and the republic under the reign of Charles V. The work through its study of political undercurrents forms a rigorous history of the Reformation from 1517 to 1556 forming the basis of modern historiography for any history of Protestantism not only German but European. The work is presented in the publishers board binding each cover made of three laminated layers of corrugated cardboard with the upper cover and spine printed; the slipcase is of the same type. At the end of the volume a small Limoges ceramic in colour composed by Jean Cortot is embedded in the board and protected by a small glass window. A rare and appealing copy. In 1940 shortly after writing this letter Barbezat would found the journal L'Arbalète to which the philosopher would contribute by entrusting his very first poems to his young protégé. This journal would later become a publishing house that would notably publish the first and scandalous texts of Jean Genet.
