Through the narrative of two destructive passions where jealousy envy and intemperance intermingle and whose only outcome will be the death of the beloved object the Marquis justifies his isolated existence now deprived of the flames that sustained his desires. The novel is reviewed in the critical study by Michèle Bokobza Kahan: Libertinage et folie dans le roman du 18e siècle Peeters 2000. It appears that the one for Les folies amoureuses is missing. Le légataire universel has a frontispiece and a title vignette. This edition was also issued in Cologne by David Roger who appears to be a fictitious publisher. Title pages in red and black unlike the Cologne edition. It should be noted that the gaps in early editions of the Memoirs were never filled until 1836; they were caused partly by crossed-out passages and partly by leaves torn from the manuscript. Contemporary full brown sheep bindings. Jansenist spines with raised bands. Red morocco title and volume labels. The spines are darker. Rubbing. A tiny wormhole at the foot of volume I as well as on the upper joint at the head. Good copy. Paul de Gondi wrote his memoirs at the request of his friends during his exile around the age of sixty around 1675-1677 and composed the autobiography of a politician during a period of civil war the Fronde. Not only a historical testimony of the first order the work stands among the literary monuments of the 18th century memoirs and other autobiographies; through its alert precise style that of a man of action and intrigue with remarkable intelligence and political ambition always alert always ready to ally with those who had betrayed him the day before. Trabaud identifies what he calls mathematical physics with the Science of Movement the subject of his book defining it as that which aims to ""determine the laws that govern the movements that exist in this universe"". As the subtitle indicates this involves providing the ""principles"" for developing a discourse on Mechanics and Physics the latter dealing with everything that belongs to the sensible universe resulting from a combination of matter and movement. ""Mechanics"" manifestly refers to machines. Thus Trabaud notes that ""most Sciences & Arts"" such as astronomy and navigation ""presuppose"" the Science of Movement or form part of it like Mechanics. He also takes as synonymous Statics or the Mechanics of solids. The bipartition between movement alone and equilibrium is one of the principles of physics in this first half of the 18th century. This analysis borrows passages from Christophe Schmidt's article MECHANIQUE STATIQUE DYNAMIQUE.
