Both are John Updike's copies with his ownership signature to the front covers. Laid into the proof by Kidder who like Updike is a Pulitzer winner is a publicity photo of Kidder and a typed letter to Updike signed by an editor at Houghton Mifflin subtly requesting a blurb for Kidder's book. Both proofs are in fine condition. 1907 EUROPEAN TRAVEL DIARY OF THE SON AND FAMILY OF FAMED CIVIL WAR SURGEON AND AUTHOR
OCEAN LINER 'MOLTKE' EUROPE. Very Good. 1907. On offer is an original 1907 handwritten travel diary representing 60 handwritten pages of a trip to Europe on board the ocean liner "Moltke". Research has determined the diary was written by 18 year old John Vance Lauderdale Jr. while on a trip with his mother his Aunt Mary and a Mr. Lane. The diary was originally purchased at the John Vance Lauderdale famed surgeon Civil War veteran and author - bio notes to follow - estate and written references buying a present for Marjorie his sister make the son most certainly author. There is also a mention of him while there in Europe and he writes about going to the "Brooklyn Daily Eagle" newspaper office while in Paris which appears that our author was purchasing a "hometown" paper to catch up on all the local news. 1907 "Tuesday 28 May At 11:35 a.m. on the above date the Moltke of the H.A.P. A. G. which means Hug all pretty American girls started with her handsome passengers for Naples. We passed Bay Ridge and saw for the last time in a good while the boat house of the C.A.C. There are many pretty girls aboard and although I have not met any yet I expect to. I was much surprised to see the course we took on going out. We kept straight out of the harbor as if we were going to Atlantic Highlands. When we got almost to Sandy Hook we turned at right angles and then went due east. It was not very long before I had been all on the ship from stem to stern. I got talking with all the stewards who could speak English and had quite a confab with the Macaroni man. Our stateroom although an inside one is all to the good. Sitting in the steamer chairs is to slow for me. At about 11:00 p.m. I went to bed and slept bum. The sea was very smooth." Wednesday 29th I awoke and found that I could not take my first salt water bath until 9:30. I fooled around until then and when the time came I was on hand. Gee it was fine. Played shuffle board and met the Morrel Girls. One of the steerage tried to jump overboard but was prevented. Sea was choppy." "Tuesday 12th At 8 o' we took carriages and drove to the station where we took electric tramways to the foot of Mt. Vesuvius. Then by taking a drive of 10 minutes we landed at Cooks Funicular RR. This took us to the laboratory of the observatory. As there was nothing to see more from the top of the crater than what we could see so we did not ascend. Had a very nice lunch at the hotel and came down the mountain at 12:35. Drove to the station and took a tram for Pompeii. Did Pompeii and saw the dead bodies coated with lava. Arrived home at 7:00 Had dinner
." Rome Hotel Central Old Roma "Monday 18th In the morning Mr. O and I went up to the hall of St. Peters It was a long hot climb but well worth the trouble. We could see the Med. Sea and all of the surrounding country. After that went to the shops but did not buy anything
Leave for Florence tomorrow." Venice "Thursday 21st At 10:40 we left Florence for Venice. On the way to the station Mr. Lane had a fainting spell but soon got over it. We had the hottest filthiest ride on the train I ever had in my life. It most did me up. At 7:20 we reached Venice and were conveyed to our Hotel Rome in gondolas. I think they are fine. After dinner we took a walk to St. Mark's Square heard the band play and then took a gondola for an hour. There is a beautiful moon and I had the time of my life. Gosh how I wished for a nice looking girl. I would like to spend my days here with the right one." Milan Geneva Montreux Palace Hotel "Thursday 27th At the Montreux. Took a trolley ride and left on the 1:11 boat for Geneva. Stayed at the Montreux Palace Hotel which cost 7000 francs. Had beautiful rooms. The sail up Lake Geneva was superb. Arrived at Geneva at 4:30. Had a swim in the lake and enjoyed it very much. After dinner went to vaudeville and saw many new sights to bed at 12:30. At 5:00 in the afternoon had a swim." Bern Interlaken Lucerne Munich "July 7th Went to church not getting there until it was almost out being unable to find it. At noon saw the soldiers drill in front to the police. Beat our own soldiers to pieces. After lunch wrote some letters and went to a place called Volks Gardens. A young Coney Island. Saw how the Germans spend their Sundays
." Vienna "Saturday 13th At 5:50 I was awakened and got dressed and my bag was packed at 6:30. Had breakfast and left the hotel and Vienna or Wein at 8:15. We had a long trip of 11 hours from 8:05 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Played cards and read the entire book Jerry Jr. It did not seem as long a trip as it might have for I found much to amuse myself with. We are at the Hotel Union and I am in my room waiting for 10:10 p.m. to come when I am due in the bath room. I do not care much about traveling in the foreign railroads. Had a rotten meal in the wagon Restaurant or dining car." Dresden Berlin Mayene Cologne Amsterdam "Thursday 25th We took the train for the Hagen and reached there about 3:15. As soon as we arrived Mrs. F. D. and I hiked out to Scheveninging the famous watering place. The water was quite cold but we had a fine time. The bathing houses are on wheels and while undressing one is pulled out into the ocean where he is to swim. No walking the beach. In the evening the whole dam party went and it was not much fun for us." The Hague Antwerp Brussels Paris "Tuesday 31st .arrived in the gayest city Paris of Europe about 5:13. All our luggage had to go through custom house and it detained us quite a little while. The hotel is very large and my room is on the 5 top floor 283 steps from the lift by actual count." "Monday 6th Awoke at 7:25 put on some of my clothes and have been making up my back notes. After breakfast went with ma and Aunt Mary and we went to the office of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. They are well situated on one of the main streets and they gave us a copy of yesterday's paper
.hot as hell here under the roof." "Wednesday 8th In the morning I spent most of my time in the office of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle office. Read all about the fire down at Long Beach. Yesterday I met Florence Morrison again I believe she's also from Brooklyn
" London "Monday 13th Went and bought father a rain coat. Then I went to London Tower again and the Tower Bridge. Crossed London Bridge on foot and went up on top of the Fire Monument. After lunch went to Whole Sales Leather store and brought a fine dress suit case. Bought Mr. Lane his presents a gold case and cigarette mouth piece." The entries suddenly stop on July 16th with them still being in London. After that one finds three pages of a handwritten poem that seems to be a collaboration of past experiences and also his present experiences on board the Moltke. It sounds like he is writing it for a girl back home. At one point in the poem he says "poor John" and he very well could mean himself. This is a great European travel diary even without the historical family significance. The cover is really not in good condition at all poor in fact but the pages are clean and tight to the binding. It measures about 4" x 5 ¾". There is also the original pencil that came with the diary. BIO NOTES: "John Vance Lauderdale was born in Sparta N.Y. in 1832. At 20 he went to work as a druggist's clerk in New York City. He pursued the occupation for several years in both New York and Cleveland. He completed his medical thesis in 1862 and from April to August 1862 he served as a contract surgeon in the U.S. Army's Western theatre. From August of 1862 until 1864 he served as a physician on the staff of Bellevue Hospital in New York City. In March of 1864 he accepted a contract position of Acting Assistant Surgeon Department of the Pacific. He received orders to Utah and served at Fort Bridger. He joined the regular army in 1866. He married Josephine Lane in 1880 and honeymooned in Europe. The Lauderdale's spent four years at Fort Sully in the Dakota Territory. The couples first a daughter was born there in 1885. Tragically she died a short time later. Their second child Marjorie Lane Lauderdale was born 1886 and the third John Vance Lauderdale Jr. was born in 1889. While assigned to Fort Ontario in Oswego NY Major Lauderdale was ordered to report to Pine Ridge Agency South Dakota to help care for the wounded from what is now known as the Battle of Wounded Knee. He retired in 1896. In 1897 the family moved into their new home on 84th street in Brooklyn New York. In 1913 his wife Josephine Lane died. John Vance Lauderdale died in 1932 the oldest retired officer in the U.S. Army. He was a man of many interests. He had an avid interest in Natural History. He collected fossils viewed comets conducted experiments in chemistry and lectured on anatomy. He was an ardent amateur photography and artist. His life from his letters and journals are the subject of two books; "The Wounded River The Civil War Letters of John Vance Lauderdale M.D." and "After Wounded Knee; Correspondence of Major and Surgeon John Vance Lauderdale While Serving with the Army Occupying the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation 1890-1891." 1898 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A VERY MUSICAL WORCESTER MASSACHUSETTS MAN
WORCESTER MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Good. 1898. On offer is an original late 19th Century manuscript diary dated 1898 Worcester Massachusetts handwritten by John Warden Jr. John does a fine job using this small flip book style notebook in a small precise hand rarely missing a day. A casual reading reveals that he is a member of a Quartet playing for different churches and lodges. He notes that his wife Eva has been sick a lot and having the doctor and at one time he says "Eva came home today feeling much better gained 5 lbs. weight 85 lbs." Researchers and historians of the era will have a wealth of financial and economic information along with his personal doings as he notes how much he pays for things the costs of car fair about his "wheel" his bicycle that he paid .15 for toilet paper and .50 for whiskey. On Tuesday Feb.15 he notes that the "Battleship Maine destroyed by an explosion in Havana." On Thursday April 21st he writes "war declared with Spain". He plays the organ in church and tells of his last day playing at the Hope Church saying he'd been doing it for 5 years and 3 months. He attends lodge meeting quite often and talks about planting vegetables and flowers etc. he says on sat. August 27th "some of the boys came home from the war and were saluted by 21 cannon shots & the mill shut down." The leather diary is in good condition save for the back cover missing. 1835 HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM A DOTING HUSBAND IN BALTIMORE TO HIS WIFE TOUCHING ON FAMILY FRIENDS AND THE GROWTH AND LOVE OF THEIR CHILDREN TOGETHER
BALTIMORE MARYLAND MD CAMPBELL VIRGINA VA. Good. 1835. On offer is a letter written from Baltimore in 1835 by John Wheeler Rutledge to his loving wife and friend Julia Ann Rutledge in Virginia. The letter is sweet and obviously shows a deep devotion to his wife. As to why they are apart it does not say but it seems that Julia is with her family in Virginia. Theyre home seems to be in Baltimore as John speaks of their children and of his work most probably as a farmer. The letter touches on a number of subjects but mostly family friends and some gossip. It was written in Baltimore on October 20th 1834. It begins My Dear Julia Ann and after some words about receiving her last letter he writes about his great satisfaction to hear of your safe arrival and good health and of Martha Ganes being so much pleased with her board. It also gives me great pleasure to inform you that my health is much better than it was when you left home. He believes the main cause is that preacher is gone.which I now think was a great drain back on my health. He lets her know that his children are doing well in good health and very fond of her and often asking me question about going to Virginia for you and about Grand Ma and sister. He mentions that his son Randolph has fattened like a little pig and become very fond of me. His son Randolph was born in 1834 and is one year old. He then tells her of their cousin Jane who is visiting and seems quite low spirited at times complains very much of being so lonesome. John may be a farmer in Baltimore as he tells Julia that he has got a lot of corn by the Spring House pulled shucked and lofted and of the pumpkins gathered. John says he is very sorry to hear D. Rutledges health is likely to be so delicated tell John to write me soon and let me know if he has seen a John Lynch and as well that he is very sorry to hear that you did not get in soon enough for Martha Dollards wedding as I have no doubt you would have enjoyed yourself very much. He then informs her that Abraham Amos negro woman Easter and her husband Wm. Bosley had Runaway last saturday night. He makes no further comment on this. Finally he finishes with pleasantries and implores her to give my love to Mother and all inquirious friends tell Martha Jane to behave pretty and be good girl and believe me to be your affectionate Husband. John W. Rutledge. The letter is 4 pages in length one long sheet folded in half and written on both sides. The front cover has the letter address written: Ms. Julia Ann Rutledge Moormans Campbell County Virginia It is in a very legible handwriting black ink with minimal smudging. The letter shows a good bit of wear from aging and folding and there is a good deal of discoloration of the paper but this does not impede any legibility of the handwriting. There are also a few small holes in the paper but only one hole is in the place of a word and that word can easily be assumed. This is a lovely document. Background: John Wheeler Rutledge was born May 7 1800 in Harford Maryland and his wife Julia Ann Rutledge née Ward was born May 2 1808 in Campbell Virginia. They were married September 30 1826. John died in 1873 and Julia in 1889. The second part which occupies 256 pages consists of a succession of translator's notes particularly rich in information on plants animals and physical geography. Contemporary full brown calf binding with marbled decoration. Smooth spine richly decorated with 5 fleurons in lozenges with angular palmettes and roulettes in place of raised bands. Red morocco title-label. Upper board slightly curved at lower right corner otherwise very handsome copy almost free from foxing with a few quires slightly yellowed a trace of pale dampstain at lower corner of title page and following leaf. The travel accounts relate the first settlement of colonists in Australia. When the British Empire lost its American colonies where all sorts of undesirable persons were regularly sent it was decided to establish the deportees in New South Wales eastern coast of Australia. A squadron of 11 ships 6 of which were assigned to transport criminals was placed under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip governor of the new settlement. The fleet left England in March 1787 reached Botany Bay in January 1788 and the colony was established at Port Jackson. The account fascinating in more ways than one by the chief surgeon of the expedition narrates in detail the voyage and installation of officers and deportees in the new colony as well as encounters with the natives. The letter is expressing delight that "Ker" will be in St. Petersburg when he is. Written in the days before his travel for his posting there. Signed Wodehouse. John Wodehouse was at Petersburg Russia exactly two years from June 1856 until May 1858. "Ker" may refer to Henry Ker Seymer 1807-1864 Of Hanford House was the Member of Parliament for Dorset. Letter measures 7-1/4 x 9 inches. Autograph letter signed. Three pages. Good condition. John Wodehouse 1st Earl of Kimberley was a British Liberal politician. He held office in every Liberal administration from 1852 to 1895 notably as Secretary of State for the Colonies and as Foreign Secretary. He was known as the Lord Wodehouse from 1846 to 1866. He was the only Liberal to serve in every Cabinet of the Gladstone/ Rosebery time period. He was at the colonial office when responsible government was granted to Cape Colony and when British Columbia was added to the Dominion of Canada. Washington May 1 1866. Rare Naval commission signed by Andrew Johnson as President of the United States. One page partially printed with engraved vignettes and retaining the original orange paper seal the document is dated May 1 1866 and appoints Leonard Paulding as Commander in the United States Navy. Signed at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. Leonard Paulding served in the U.S. Navy from 1840 to 1867. Beginning as a midshipman abroad the USS Preble II he was promoted to an officer on September 14 1855 and subsequently to commander with the present document. In near fine condition. Matted. The entire piece measures 23 inches by 20 inches. The 17th president of the United States Andrew Johnson assumed the presidency upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. . A Democrat who ran with Lincoln on the National Union ticket Johnson came to office as the Civil War concluded and fought for the quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union. His plans did not give protection to the former slaves; he came into conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress culminating in his impeachment by the House of Representatives. unknown books

Thick quarto two volumes original full tan reverse <span class="glossaryQtip qTip">calf</span> with hand painted salmon-fly designs and embossed cartouches on both front covers beveled edges leather straps with snaps silk <span class="glossaryQtip qTip">doublures. Each volume is on handmade paper and richly illustrated with 75 full-page illustrations of fish and flies and numerous in-text photolithographs of fishing holes and tackle. </span>Contributors include such notable anglers as William Harris Archibald Mitchell John Quackenbos and George Van Siclen. In very good condition. Books from the library of the Roosevelts are scarce and desirable. William Harris writes in his introduction "I believe that Forest Lake and River will now and in the years to come be a marvel of beauty and skill to the angling fraternity a high landmark in book work and a testimonial to its author's artistic nature and practical appreciation of the needs of his brother anglers when in pursuit of their favorite pastime." 1942. Two rare original black and white photographs of Lyndon B. Johnson annotated by him on the verso of each. Lyndon has annotated the photograph of him entering the cockpit of a plane "Boarding Navy PBY plane Dutch Harbor Alaska Latter part of July 1942" and the photograph of him examining a world map "Never Used Taken Mc sic Arthur Office Headquarters - Somewhere in Australia June 18 1942." In near fine condition. Johnson was appointed Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve during the spring of 1940; he served on active duty between December 1941-July 1942. In the spring of 1942 President Franklin D. Roosevelt dispatched Johnson as a political adviser to observe and report on military conditions in the Southwest Pacific. On June 9 1942 - a little over a week before the photo of Johnson before the map was taken - Johnson's plane was attacked. General Douglas MacArthur recommended that Johnson be awarded the Silver Star to reward Johnson's "gallantry in action". unknown books

Johnson." A presidential seal green ribbon calling card and White House envelope are affixed to the reverse. Framed and in fine condition. The recipient Deke DeLoach worked at the FBI for nearly thirty years and in 1965 was promoted by Hoover to Deputy Director. During his post DeLoach was the third most senior official in the FBI after J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson and was the lead investigator in both the Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. assassinations. The entire piece measures 11.75 inches by 14.75 inches. Lyndon Baines Johnson was an American politician who served as the 36th President of the United States from 1963 to 1969 assuming the office after serving as the 37th Vice President of the United States under President John F. Kennedy from 1961 to 1963. A Democrat from Texas he previously served as a United States Representative from 1937 to 1949 and then as a United States Senator from 1949 to 1961. He spent six years as Senate Majority Leader two as Senate Minority Leader and two more as Senate Majority Whip. unknown books

Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27 1908 near Stonewall Texas in a small farmhouse on the Pedernales River. He was the oldest of five children born to Samuel Ealy Johnson Jr. and Rebekah Baines. Johnson had English German and Ulster Scots ancestry. He was maternally descended from pioneer Baptist clergyman George Washington Baines who pastored eight churches in Texas as well as others in Arkansas and Louisiana.
